The question is phrased to throw you off. "The room cost $27, the bellhop has $2. Where did the other dollar go?" That's not exactly true. The room cost $25. The bellhop kept $2. The three friends each got a dollar, totaling $30. The $2 the bellhop kept, if you count it towards the room cost, is 2 of the $27. Adding the three dollars that he gave to the friends gives an answer of $30.
