Guys, there's no need for me to give you the answer for this simple first grade math question, I don't want to insult all your intelligent. Have confidence in yourself, nobody can tell you what is right and what is wrong, and whatever answer you come up with, stick to it, just know that you're the genius, and they aint better than you, and you got the right answer.

Anyway, I got another simple yet slightly harder math question in the RR, it should be a piece cake for you guys. I will provide answer for this one later on since it's slightly harder.

:puppy:

Do you even know the answer?

I bet there was some trick wording to the question that is ridiculous and you are just ashamed to tell us after so many people fought over the answer.

$0 because,
Bought for $5 sold for $7 up $2
Bought for $9 down $7
Sold for $12 up $5
Minus the original $5 he spent = $0

You're subtracting the original $5 twice...once at the beginning and once at the end.

You start in the hole,

buy for 5

-5 sell for 7 = +2
+2 - rebuy for 9 = -7
-7 sell for 12 = +5

-5 + 5 = 0

So many fucking idiots on here. It's $5, people. Seriously, if you can't figure it's $5 withinn 10 seconds, then quit gambling. Do not pass go, do not collect $200, game over. Don't ever play poker again, don't ever think of trading stocks. Don't even think about helping your kids with their homework. There is no hope for you.

It is $5. For those who are still confused, follow this simple logic. Assume you start with x dollars, you end up with x -5 +7 -9 +12 in your pocket, which is x +5.

I just saw this thread linked from SBR and couldn't help myself.

Hopefully the following JavaScript will convincingly demonstrate the solution to all those still in doubt:

<hr><script>var lNextTrans=1; var lMaxTransactions=10; function doStuff() { var CurWallet = parseFloat(document.getElementById('txtStart').value.replace('$',"")).toFixed(2); document.getElementById('txtStart').value = '$' + CurWallet; if (lNextTrans > lMaxTransactions) { return; }; document.getElementById('txtTrans_'+lNextTrans).value = ""; for (var i = 1; i <= lNextTrans; i++) { if (document.getElementById('rowTrans_'+i).style.display == "") { var ThisVal = parseFloat(0+document.getElementById('txtTrans_'+i).value.replace('$',"")).toFixed(2); document.getElementById('txtTrans_'+i).value = '$' + ThisVal; if (Math.round(i/2) != i/2 ) ThisVal *= -1; CurWallet = parseFloat(CurWallet) + parseFloat(ThisVal); } else { document.getElementById('rowTrans_'+i).style.display=""; document.getElementById('txtTrans_'+i).value = ""; } } for (var i = lNextTrans+1; i<=lMaxTransactions; i++) { document.getElementById('rowTrans_'+i).style.display="none"; } var CurPNL = CurWallet - parseFloat(document.getElementById('txtStart').value.replace('$',"")).toFixed(2); if (CurWallet == undefined || CurWallet == 0) { document.getElementById('CurWallet').innerHTML = '$0'; } else if (CurWallet > 0) { document.getElementById('CurWallet').innerHTML = '$' + parseFloat(CurWallet).toFixed(2); } else { document.getElementById('CurWallet').innerHTML = '-$' + parseFloat(-CurWallet).toFixed(2); } if (Math.round(lNextTrans/2) == lNextTrans/2 ) { document.getElementById('CurWallet').innerHTML += " and " + document.getElementById('txtItem').value; } if (CurPNL == undefined || CurPNL == 0) { document.getElementById('CurPNL').innerHTML = '$0'; } else if (CurPNL > 0) { document.getElementById('CurPNL').innerHTML = '$' + parseFloat(CurPNL).toFixed(2); } else { document.getElementById('CurPNL').innerHTML = '-$' + parseFloat(-CurPNL).toFixed(2); } if (Math.round(lNextTrans/2) == lNextTrans/2 ) { document.getElementById('CurPNL').innerHTML += " and " + document.getElementById('txtItem').value; } document.getElementById('txtTrans_'+lNextTrans).focus(); lNextTrans += 1; } </script> <form name=frmCalc id=frmCalc> <table border=0><tr><td>How much money is in your wallet to start?</td><td><input type=text id=txtStart value=100 size=14></td></tr> <tr><td>What item are you buying?</td><td><input type=text id=txtItem value="a chicken" size=14></td></tr> <tr><td>Currently in your wallet:</td><td id=CurWallet></td></tr> <tr><td>Your current profit or loss:</td><td id=CurPNL></td></tr> <tr><td> </td></tr> <script>for (var i = 1; i <= lMaxTransactions; i++) { document.write("<tr id=rowTrans_" + i +" style='display: none;'><td>How much do you "); document.write(Math.round(i/2) != i/2 ? "<br>" : ""); document.write("</td></tr>"); } document.write(" </table><br><input value=Reset type=button onClick='lNextTrans=1;doStuff();'></form>"); doStuff(); </script>

You already accounted for the first $5 when you subtracted it from the $7 profit to get $2. Why would you subtract it again?

Might be the same guy ?
Three men go to stay at a motel, and the man at the desk charges them $30.00 for a room. They split the cost ten dollars each. Later the manager tells the desk man that he overcharged the men, that the actual cost should have been $25.00. The manager gives the bellboy $5.00 and tells him to give it to the men.
The bellboy, however, decides to cheat the men and pockets $2.00, giving each of the men only one dollar. Now each man has paid $9.00 to stay in the room and 3 x $9.00 = $27.00. The bellboy has pocketed $2.00. $27.00 + $2.00 = $29.00 - so where is the missing $1.00?

Did anyone ever get this right?
