Greatest ever Young! You cannot compare eras because of rule changes etc etc...Young dominated his era. Most seasons leading the league in passing. Always in the top ten in passing. Most career rushing tds when retired and second most rushing yards when retired for a qb! Dual threat, best ever imo. And remember he won a passing title without Rice.

My twin brother was put up for adoption at birth and I never met him. Looks like I found him......thinks Elway one of the most overrated QB's in history......would take a dual threat in Steve Young for his pick of the greatest QB.

Steve Young getting a lot of love in this thread for a guy who Favre was better then when both were in their primes.

Once Favre came into his prime he was easily considered the consensus best QB in the league.

Also, durability matters. Young had about 3 good seasons before he started getting hurt because of his running style. Favre never missed a game for like 20 years.

Favre was a gunslinger.....threw to many interceptions. Quarterback rating never above 100 in 1992 to 1998 and a low of 85.3. Young all but one year above a 100 with a high 112.8 and a low of 97.2 (which Favre only topped once in that span). No question Young was the better runner. I stick by what I want in a quarterback: smart, accurate and dual threat (the ability to run). This combination of qualities will be the hardest to defend.

I will give Favre credit for his durability over his career. To play Quarterback and not miss a game is very impressive. One Quarterback in one game in their prime....still taking Young.

John Elway=overrated!! Because of the great comebacks (which he put them in that predicament with his AWFUL play for 56 minutes) and the way he ended his career (probably on the most complete offence ever!) everyone thinks he's so great. Let's look and the numbers. First his drive. The drive would not have been necessary if he played better during the first 56 minutes, in which he had a QB rating of 50 with no tds and one pic completing less than 50% of his passes. Second when you compare him to his contemporaries, Montana, Marino, Young, Elway can't even hold their jockstraps! Elway had 8 1000 yard rushing seasons by a running back during his career in an era where running the ball was huge, but couldn't crack 80 (once) on the QB rating, until The Bronco were STACKED with talent. By comparison Montana had 4 1000 yard seasons Young 3 and Marino ONLY ONE!!! Yet these QBs stats destroyed Elways! Rings are a TEAM STAT not a player. Qbs don't play on defence or special teams. The 49ers had numerous seasons where their leading rusher did not even have 600 yards!!! Just because he was exciting to watch, big arm, risk taking does not make him great! Finally that Denver team was so stacked that even without Terrell Davis, Brian Griese led the league in passing and Jake Plummer made the pro bowl!!!! Everyone forgets how Elway played during the ENTIRE game in his famous comebacks, but only remember a small segment of the game. Good qb yes, one of the greatest ever...not even close!

to a certain extent. In evaluating an athlete's body of work, WINNING has to a parameter. ESPECIALLY in a sport in which a specific position has a significant effect on the outcome of the game; the quarterback in football fits that. To add, if the player wins consistently? Are you saying said person shouldnt be given extra points for that? Come on now. I don't care if the person has 'the greatest coach ever'.....blah blah blah. The coach is not the guy throwing the ball, executing the game plan /making decisions on the field.

what to argue RAW QB talent? like release, accuracy on the long ball, foot speed...etc. That's fair. BUT again, if we are looking at the whole picture other factors weigh, one being the abililty to win, ESPECIALLY as a QB

you're a hockey guy, no?

cmon, how long has the debate of Crosby Vs Ovie been going on? You telling me Stanley Cup rings are not a factor? The ability to lead your team to glory? WHAT EXACTLY has Ovie led the Caps to, other than President Cups? :missingte You want THAT guy to lead your team? No one can dispute his talent. Intangibles are not there

I like the fact that Young was such a great duel threat....accurate passer and the ability to run.....and not just but run for run for big gains that the defense had to take into account. The quarterback that is accurate but not mobile is just not as valuable in my assessment.

I see a lot of love for Dan Marino.....In my book,i put Steve Young ahead of Marino....Just my opinion.

Other than Elway, Favre most overrated QB. Young whipped Favre's ass every single season in qb rating during his prime save for 95! Plus he was a waaay better runner! Media darling won him those MVPs, Young posting much better numbers!

YES! The gunslinging, risk taking, makes him exciting to watch, lots of media attention hence the MVPs! Smart, accurate dual threat Young was better!

Aikman...3 Superbowls, 3 wins...not even mentioned through 68 posts. Staubach mentioned once and misspelled. Everybody hates the Cowboys?

Glad to see Steve Young getting so much love. I always rated him better than Montana. For me, top 5:
1)Brady
2)Elway
3)Marino
4)Young
5)Peyton

Fouts, Montana, Unitas, Farve, Staubach, Bradshaw, Aikman, Rodgers, Dawson, Otto Graham in the next tier, and Aaron has a good chance of supplanting Peyton if he keeps doing what he's been doing for another 3-5 years.
