Why would A-Rod be third if he is missing a month+?

And this sounds like a patch job they are doing, which could leave some lingering effects. In a H2H league, there is no way you can take him in the top 10, IMO. Starting the league at 1-5 because your first round pick is sidelined is not good strategy in my opinion.

Unfortunately, I was unable to attend our league's Live Draft. So I assembled a pretty fast AutoDraft list of about 30 players, including the top 11 Rays (except Longoria) scattered throughout my list at about their appropriate rankings.

So I got Upton at #8, Crawford at #17

I had Lincecum as my second, but another guy took him at #13

Anyway, after BJ and CC, some other guy took Longoria and then the other Live draft managers apparently kept discounting Rays players and when the smoke cleared, I had 12 Rays on my post draft team.....shit

Immediately cut Navarro (I got Joe Mauer earlier in draft) and just completed a trade of Pat Burrell for the Atlanta Brave closer Rodriguez.

That leaves me with five Ray pitchers (Garza, Shields, Kaz, Price, Howell), Pena, BJ, CC and also have Iwamura and Bartlett (backup SS)

Did pull KRod and Marmol, then traded to get Figgins so I think I'm in pretty strong shape to crush Saves, SB, Runs and Ks early. Will likely need to chase down HR/RBI after first couple months.

Good god, thats alot of Rays.

Aren't you concerned that Upton's power completely disappeared last season. He hit 9 homeruns in 500+ at bats. Of course you have to love his speed, but you could have gotten him in the 3rd or 4th round safely. Not sure if it matters in your league, but he strikes out way too often.

You look good with the closers, but Marmol will drive you nuts. He is absolutely filthy, but he never makes it look easy.

***My draft is tonight, so all this banter is getting me ready. Thanks guys

Because he's the best player in fantasy baseball when healthy... Where would you take Adrian Peterson in a fantasy football draft if he was out for the first 4 games? Still a top-8 type guy IMO.

I completely disagree, especially when it comes to AP. if you start a football league 0-4 or 1-3, you are pretty much done. He's not going to do you a whole lot of good when you don't make the playoffs. Baseball is not as drastic because it is a LONG season, I still wouldnt take ARod in round 1, round 2...possibly, but more than likely I would wait until the third round for him right now. In fact, I do not even want him so I hope he goes right away

Upton played the first four and half months with a torn labrum in his right shoulder. After taking nearly a month off in late Aug/Sep he came back healed and raked with power in the AL Playoffs.

BOL on your draft tonight however you elect to proceed

I agree to an extent with Barman...Upton has all the tools as long as he stays healthy plus he is young. At #2 however, it is still risky IMO........I must admit I am contemplating it, b/c I dont want Pujols there due to his lack of SB's. If you dont get the SB's guys ealry, you dont get them at all.

OK, would it be a bad move to pass on Pujols & draft Sizemore or Wright at #2?

Pujols or Hanley were your only choices with that pick IMO. I'm assuming HanRam went #1 right?

JAKE, you have far more experience in this than do I.

How often do the Preseason Top 3 actually finish in the Top 3 by seasons end?

Based on any respective ranking system of course.

Not going back to the "Upton" call per se, but rather examining the true value of taking a preseason Top3 and keeping them rather than immediately seeking to Trade Down.

Reason I ask is one personal experience two NBA seasons ago when I got the #1 in a Live Draft where I could not attend and the system gives me LeBron.

Now I traded him away within a couple weeks for approximately the preseason #10 and #25 (don't recall exactly).

By year end, his performance earned him the #9 overall ranking for our scoring system. So if I had kept him all year, I would have "lost value", right?

Last season (no lie) NFL in one of my two leagues, had the #3 and took Tom Brady, but then immediately during the live draft itself traded down for Brees and approximately the 35th pick (12 team league).

Now that's a dramatic example since Brady then got hurt and missed all year, but the point was that I just felt that unless he finished #3, or at least in top 5 to 6 at year end (he was #1 the year before eh?) I would be foolish to keep him all year.

Depends where your #10 and #25 picks ended up after the year I suppose. As far as how often the top 3 finish in the top 3, I'm really not sure. I'll try to find it tomorrow. I have a body ache and might get sick so getting an early night.

Well yeah, the overall analysis of my specific trade requires knowing where the preseason 10 and 25 finished.

But more in general, was interested to get feedback on my personal notion that getting any of the first three, maybe five slots in the draft merits an almost immediate shopping to trade down in hopes of nabbing a couple of lower players who themselves by seasons end have the chance to "gain value" - something which is very unlikely for a Top3

will check back on your ideas tomorrow

Yes I wanted Han ram, but he went #1. I got Pujols at #2 in 15-man league/ 30 rounds.

I got Upton at the ass end of Round #2 by the way! Pretty sweet as long as the guy isnt hiding an injury.

Its pretty safe to say Upton would have been there at the beginning of the 3rd round as well
