Scuffle breaks out at Raiders practice.

CpRxZw9WEAALpRE.jpg

Are the Oakland Raiders looking to their bad boy past for inspiration in 2016?
According to Comcast SportsNet Bay Area, prized free-agent acquisition Kelechi Osemele and defensive end Mario Edwards Jr. engaged in a brawl on Saturday that involved Edwards uncorking a few punches once the pair reached the ground. The Raiders kicked both out of practice and they were relegated to the exercise bike for the remainder of workouts.

From CSN Bay Area:
Edwards Jr. ended up in dominant position and threw some intense punches. The feature players were separated after that dust-up -- the Raiders were in full pads -- but started another one just a few minutes later.

As long as no one is hurt -- and that appears to be the case -- Raiders coaches probably will look at this as a teaching moment and move on. Many head coaches across the NFL hope for a little bit of camp brawling to ignite the intensity of practices that can become dense and boring to some players. The Raiders, however, likely dreaded the sight of their $58.5 million dollar man on the ground taking heat.

"It comes with training camp," nose tackle Justin Ellis said, via Silver and Black Pride. "There's never been a training camp that you see nobody get in a fight. Never in history. If you got competition out there, there's gonna be a fight, because you go against this guy every day, you're tired of him, he beating you, you beating him, it's hot, you're tired, you might shove a little bit. They'll get over it, I promise you."

Raiders coach Jack Del Rio wasn't scheduled to speak to reporters Saturday and hasn't spoken about the incident publicly yet.
The offensive line will be the life blood of Oakland's resurgence if it finally happens in 2016. Osemele will most certainly see Edwards again this camp, but hopefully the pair can get better together without getting tossed.

Julian Edelman returns to practice for Patriots.

19068874-mmmain.jpg

Julian Edelman is back.

The Patriots' best wide receiver, who underwent a minor corrective foot surgery back in May and started the training camp on the physically unable to perform list alongside six of his of his teammates, returned to the practice field in pads Sunday, according to multiple reporters attending practice.
Edelman was taken off PUP, the team announced. NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport said the move occurred earlier than expected. However, Edelman did not take part in the team's scrimmage.

When asked about his Week 1 availability the wideout said: "Anytime you can go out there and practice with full pads before the season, it's a good sign."
Edelman broke his foot back in November, a massive setback for a Patriots team that seemed destined to storm back into the playoffs and return to the Super Bowl. Edelman caught 61 balls for 692 yards and seven scores over nine games a year ago.

The news is obviously welcome for a Patriots team looking for positive developments on offense. With Tom Brady suspended for the first four games of the season and with Danny Amendola still not practicing, the team is looking to surround Jimmy Garoppolo with enough weapons to get through the first quarter of the season.

Brandon Spikes returns to Buffalo.

CpRVeAdXgAk_JK2.jpg

After a year away from the NFL, Brandon Spikes has decided to reunite with the Buffalo Bills.
Spikes signed a one-year contract with the Bills on Sunday, a source informed of the deal told NFL Media's Mike Garafolo. The linebacker, who played for Buffalo in 2014, has spent his entire career in the AFC East, playing his first four seasons with the New England Patriots. Last week, he worked out for the Dolphins but left without a deal.

In addition, the Bills signed veteran linebacker David Hawthorne and tight end Jimmay Mundine, the team announced. To make room for the signings, the team released cornerback Javier Arenas and wide receiver Gary Chambers, and waived injured linebacker Kevin Reddick.
Spikes was set to rejoin the Patriots in 2015, but was released by the team after his involvement in a vehicular hit-and-run incident. He was then suspended four games for violating the NFL's personal conduct policy, but he served the ban during his time as a free agent, a source with knowledge of the situation told NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport. Now he gets to enjoy the Rex and Rob Ryan experience, as neither brother was in Buffalo during Spikes' first stint with the team.

The Patriots selected the University of Florida product in the second round of the 2010 draft, and Spikes was a staple at inside linebacker early on in Bill Belichick's defense.
Rex Ryan recently said he was "very concerned" about the injury situation of linebacker Reggie Ragland, the team's 2016 second-round selection. It remains to be seen if the additions of Spikes and Hawthorne will foreshadow bad news for the rookie.

Browns name Robert Griffin III starting quarterback.

CpVw027WcAEHdc5.jpg

Robert Griffin III is back to being a starting quarterback in the NFL. The Cleveland Browns made the announcement Monday morning.
"It's time. Robert has earned the right to be named the starting quarterback of the Cleveland Browns," new Browns coach Hue Jackson said in a statement. "Since he was signed back in March, Robert has made it clear through his actions that he is willing to do everything that has been asked of him to earn this role. Throughout this process he has gained the respect from his teammates, the coaching staff and the entire organization that is necessary for him to lead our offense and really the entire team.

Griffin has been battling
Josh McCown for the starting job.
"Josh in particular has been outstanding throughout this process and all of our quarterbacks have worked well together," Jackson said.
Griffin was Rookie of the Year and made the Pro Bowl in his rookie season after being selected second in the 2012 draft by the
Washington Redskins. A series of injuries, however, derailed his career and last season he lost his starting job in Washington to Kirk Cousins.
The two sides moved on after the season and Griffin signed with the Browns, who went 3-13 last season and haven't had a winning campaign since 2007.

"Throughout the offseason program and training camp, Robert has shown improvement every day and we expect him to continue to ascend as he becomes more and more acclimated to the offensive system we will employ this season," Jackson said." I've been crystal clear on what we expect from Robert. He fully understands the responsibility and I feel he is ready to handle this role."
McCown started eight games last season but battled injuries, opening the door for Johnny Manziel. Off-field problems ultimately derailed Manziel's career and he remains unsigned.
