Here's a suggestion. Keep all the rules exactly the same except for the following.
First team to score 4 or more points wins. Game over. You can still kick a field goal, but you didn't win yet. You are up 3 and would still need another 3 to get the sudden death win. If the 15 minutes elapses and you are up because of the 3, good for your team. You win. The only downfall to this suggestion is there will be a few more ties during the season, but at least it gives the team that is driving in first an incentive to score a touchdown rather than a field goal.

This is the best overtime change idea i'ver ever heard!! I like it! Cause all teams play so safe in overtime knowing they just need a FG and never even try for the TD. This would change that and make overtime much more interesting :aktion033

Leave it up to the kickers. Coin toss to decide who kicks first. Start them with a 35 yarder. 5 yards from there. Match the kick or you lose.

Thanks for feedback

I LIKE POCKET KUTTERS IDEA IF THERE IS EVER A CHANGE

I GUESS MY OBJECTION IS THE FIELD GOAL KICKERS ARE SO GOOD, THEY ONLY NEED A FEW IST DOWNS IN O.T. AND GAME OVER--4 POINTS OR MORE, OR MUST GO FOR T.D. MORE EXCITING, MORE SKILL. ONE BAD PENALTY OR ONE BAD DEFENSE MISTAKE--FIELD GOAL, GAME OVER
ALSO AGREE WITH THOSE THAT MENTION DEFENSE COUNTS TOO.
OBVIOUSLY THERE'S NO RIGHT OR WRONG, JUST DOESN'T FEEL RIGHT
TEAM LOSING WITHOUT OPPORTUNITY TO GO ON OFFENSE

THANKS FOR ALL THE FEEDBACK

It surprises me so people say want the NFL overtime format changed. I think people would really miss the suspense of sudden death if the rule were ever changed.

Where's the supsense in college when a team scores a TD in overtime, but now we have to wait for the other team to get a chance? And it goes against the very nature of football to just hand offenses the ball on the 25 yard line. No kick-offs??? That ain't football.

I say becareful of what you wish for. I think that if the OT format is changed, handicapping games will change. I like the # 3 being so important in linespread. That would change if the format of OT is anything other than the way it is now.

I think adding the 4-pt rule to the current setup is a good one.

I hate when someone gets a good kick return, runs 1-2 plays and kicks a 54 yard field goal to win. Hell it could just take a good return and they're in field position because your special teams sucks.

I don't think the college setup would work in the NFL. How many college OT's are decided by some shitty kicker missing a money FG? The kickers are a TON better in the NFL and a smart coach could just kick his way to victory.

Football is a team sports. So far all the people that want it changed, want OT changed so that the offense could get a chance, if a teams defense and special teams suck.

If one team is much better at special teams...
Think Hester or Josh Cribbs returning
and one team sucks on special teams...
think Indy's return units

why shouldn't that factor into the game?

I like the current sudden death format, but the 4 point idea isn't bad.

but one other idea I like is that if the game finishes regulation in a tie.... both teams meet at midfield and the Home team places the football anywhere they want inbetween the 40 yard line and say the 10 yard line. The visiting team gets to choose if they would rather kick or receive a free kick from that point.

So let's say last night for example. Lovie Smith might put the football at his own 40 yardline, and Sean Payton would decided if the Saints would rather kick or receive from the 40 yard line.

The odds are that a decent punter/coverage unit would be able to pin the Saints back inside the 20, forcing them to move down the entire field. If the Bears defense stops them, then THEY have the short field.

If the saints decline from the 40, or where ever, they THEY kick off, pin the bears back deep, and try and regain field position.

I think it would be interesting and telling to see how much coaches believe in their defense. Fear and greed would play a part.

What if the Steelers, Titans or Ravens get into OT and say fuck it, we place the ball at the 20 because you aren't going to get any first downs on us. The receiving team would get good field position if they choose to receive, OR the Steelers would get a gift field posiiton of the other team declined to receive.

The 20 yardline would be an extreme, but even kicking off from the 30, with a tired team, tired defense etc.

Both team get one possession. They each kick it off and each have to play defense. This coin flip thing stinks.

The NFL passed a form of modified sudden death overtime today at the league meetings in Orlando.

Owners passed the vote by a count of 28-4. The changes will apply only to the postseason for the 2010 season.

The modified sudden death rule means both teams get opportunities for possessions in overtime (fumbling away a kickoff would count as an opportunity) -- if the team that had the ball first doesn't score a touchdown.

Falcons president Rich McKay noted there will be two sets of rules for the regular season and the playoffs.

"Part of the reason we have different rules is because we have different consequences," he said.

But McKay said "there was certainly sentiment in the room to discuss having this rule in the regular season."

More study is needed before such a change is made, but McKay said owners may consider making the change for the regular season as early as May.

Several owners and coaches had expressed skepticism about changing the overtime rule. But commissioner Roger Goodell endorsed a change in the overtime rule on Monday. Goodell said it was "very much worth consideration"

More to come
