David- There really isn't anything for the hotels to sort out. What the NFL had a problem with was the Palms showing the game on the movie screens. Admission charges to parties and charging for food and beverages is a not an issue as far as the NFL is concerned. The hotels can set up a hundred TV's if they want to as long as the screen isn't bigger than 55 inches. I've never been to one of the parties here but I've heard they're pretty good. Too many rube tourists cheering after every f**king play and too much smoke.

Charlie- I seldom watch local news because the broadcasts here are produced for the average Las Vegan who typically reads at the 5th grade level has the attention span of a sneeze but I have to admit that Nina Radetich and Beth Fisher on Channel 3 are totally hot and really belong on the The Prescription's "hit it" list.

Like yourself, I just happened to have Channel 3 on tonight for the 6 o'clock news and saw the story involving The Palms and the NFL.

SoccerBob - You are sooooo right. If you want to see a good comedy, watch the channel 5 news at 10PM. What a journalistic joke. However, the female anchor is kinda cute, but I forgot her name.

Charlie- Her name is Shelley Bruner. You're right. She looks really good. Channel 5 news is horrible so the only reason to watch it would be just to look at her.

Yes, you are right. It is Shelly Bruner. She has a little over-bite, but that can be corrected with braces.

Do they make illigal copy-cat pills to REDUCE the size of those 55" units?

I guess not! If they did, we would all get a million of them in our spam every day!

Charlie,

I want to read more on this story, but in no surprise to me the RJ is completely ignoring it...or maybe as usual Rod Smith is waiting to hear what Tom Grey and all the anti-gaming people have to say about it. Did you see any story about it? I am looking for a party to go to with my old man and some friends, but this obviously makes that an uncertain process. What else have you seen or heard?

I think your wrong with your statement the screen can be as big as they want it.

Are you really IN LAS VEGAS???

Aladdin $26.25, game will be broadcast on movie theatre-size screens.

Luxor $80.00, game will be on a giant closed-circuit projection screen.

MGM Grand-Showbar Lounge $45.00, game will be shown on a 20-foot-by-27-foot TV screen.

Golden Nugget $60.00, A giant screen.

Now the Palms must of really did something really wrong to piss-off the NFL. They were going to be shown in the Brenden Theatres. The Palms is going to have a alternate venue for the game at no charge with free hot dogs and draft beer.

Could have been because they went thru Ticketmaster to sell the tickets to the event.
Refunds can be from Ticketmaster or at the Palms Shop.

Newguy:

The 55" rule is what the Palms said the NFL told them...the legal counsel for the league told me today: "The law states you can't show a copyrighted event on a screen larger than normally would be found in a household..."

He also told me that you can't charge admission, though the Palms said that wasn't in the letter from the NFL and wasn't the main point of their conversations with the league.

All of those other places mentioned are certainly advertising those large screens (which have been used for years all over Vegas...it hasn't been any secret...they've attracted TV news coverage every year).

As of late Thursday, I hadn't heard of any other hotels that have been contacted by the league, only the Palms. Everyone else is going ahead with their plans.

The NFL lawyer told me they had learned of more violators and would be sending more letters soon. A Palms spokesman said the NFL told him the same thing.

A lot of party organizers are going to be very nervous getting their mail or checking their faxes the next two days.

Back to the topic of this thread (not that I don't like pretty ladies)...

Orleans is second Vegas casino to cancel a major party (their biggest one that was going to be in the Orleans Arena) because of a letter they received from the NFL. All of their smaller parties (as well as other Coast properties) in ballrooms will go on as planned.

And breaking news...add the Aladdin as another cancellation...

And other casinos are taking out their huge screens in VIP parties to comply with the 55-inch rule.

I would love to own a Best Buy or other TV/electronics store in town right now because there's a lot of casinos looking for a lot of TVs!!!!!'

Someone I talked to today just overheard from some sales guys that the beer advertisers vented their frustration with this to the NFL. No one matters more to the NFL than the beer companies, we all know that. Us fans are peons compared to what the beer companies can do. And the beer companies are going to lose quite a bit of revenue from this move, so they let it be known. Little known secret is that the beer companies and the TV guys are really on gambling's side, they just never put it that way. In this case they said "we had orders for a lot of beer to these parties and now we hear some policy of yours has cancelled these parties. How can you cancel a party on Super Bowl Sunday?" Don't see anything happening, but nice that someone is pointing out what a bunch of idiots the NFL are.

I really think this move was precipitated by the Vegas move to get publicity off of the NFL. Last year Vegas was denied to advertise their "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas" ads during the Super Bowl. This gave Vegas a great deal of publicity by being denied.

This year Vegas tried it again, probably knowing the answer would be no, just to get the free publicity again. The NFL had to get back somehow and I think that is the reason they made this move. Some board meeting of NFL execs went like this:

Chairman: "Those Vegas a-holes are making us look bad again. What can we do? Any ideas?"

Peon who wants to brown nose: "Well... they have these parties where they charge for admission. Maybe we can screw them on their parties."

Chairman: "That sounds like a possible plan. Look into that would you?"

My guess is that there are parties throughout the country that are charging admission fees, but Vegas was singled out by the NFL as retaliation.

Vegas Shut Out of Super Bowl ... Again

Charlie...11, huh? I knew of half a dozen, though last I talked to MGM Mirage they hadn't made a decision.

Wildbill...thanks for mentioning the beer company angle...wouldn't have thought of that on my own (or at least not until the next time I had a cold one

...they would be a very influential lobbyist.

DM...the timing of this totally plays into your theory, especially with that new national ad starting up two weeks ago, flaunting "if only it were this exciting at the game in Houston."
