Damn! WTF happened to the Gold Sheet? That college football preview they just put out is just terrible. Mort Olsham would roll over in his grave.

The Gold Sheet was sold last year. Everything is different and a disaster. Just take a look at their won lost record last year and that will tell you all you need to know.

You're welcome.

No, they usually arrive later Tuesday evening or occasionally early Wednesday morning. Will post it then, I combine the last 5 issues into one PDF so I have all the current selections in one file.

Gold Sheet College Football - Week One

Nebraska 28
Illinois 27

Illinois HC Bret Bielema makes his return to the Big Ten, replacing Lovie Smith (who was 17-40 SU in 5 seasons in Champaign-Urbana). Bielema, who returns to college ball after 3 years as an NFL assistant for the Pats and Giants following his stints at Wisconsin and Arkansas, inherits 18 returning starters, but he’ll undoubtedly begin to refashion the team with vet o.c. Tony Petersen to resemble his successful Badger teams (and less-accomplished Arkansas squads). Nebraska HC Scott Frost has disappointed fans after jumping to his alma mater from UCF, as the Huskers are just 12-20 SU in his 3 years in Lincoln. This is a revenge game for Nebraska, as Illinois upset the Huskers in Lincoln 41-23 as a 16½-point dog in 2020, snapping a 4-game series losing streak while contributing to Nebraska’s 4-game dive to end 2020. Feel points worth taking with Illini again this time around, with Bielema giving an infusion of NFL ideas, vet QB Brandon Peters (still the likely starter despite the addition of Rutgers’ transfer Artur Sitkowski), explosive talent Isaiah Williams moving to WR, and RB Chase Brown (3rd all-B1G LY) operating behind a vet OL. No, Lovie didn’t leave the cupboard bare at Illinois. Nebraska QB Adrian Martinez is clearly dangerous (5628 career YP, 31 TDP, 1776 YR, 4.7 ypc and 22 rush TDs), but we remain suspicious of Frost’s D, which has yielded just shy of 30 ppg in his tenure in Lincoln, despite the fact that unit boasts 10 returning starters. This could be the best Illinois squad in several years. Points worth taking.

Hawaii 26
UCLA 35

It seems like Muhammad Ali was still ruling the heavyweight division the last time a Chip Kelly-coached team made any noise. We’re kidding...sort of, as Chip hasn’t had a winning season in a long time (2014 with the Eagles), and entering Week Zero his teams are 18-44 SU and 25-37 vs. line in the NFL and UCLA since 2015. Sheesh! Now, however, with almost everyone back from LY’s near-miss season with all losses by 6 or fewer, they’ve temporarily stopped talking about Mick Cronin’s Bruins hoopsters in Westwood, as even Bill Walton seems inclined to give Kelly one more chance. But we’ve been burned too may times laying points with UCLA at the Rose Bowl dating to the Jim Mora years (8-16 as home chalk since 2015; 2-6 for Kelly), and Todd Graham has often had his teams punching above their weight, as UH did when last seen in December as it whipped favored Houston in the New Mexico Bowl. Third-year soph QB Chevan Cordeiro emerged as a nice dual-threat (20-18 YP and team-best 483 YR) for the Bows in the truncated 2020 slate, and Graham’s D returns almost everyone from a platoon that ranked middle-of-the-pack nationally–heady stuff in Honolulu compared to some of the desultory performances from the stop unit in preceding pre-Graham years. Expect DTR to eventually wheel the Bruins out of danger, but have little interest laying an inflated price with what has been a chronic underachiever that could also be excused for looking ahead to a visit by LSU next week.

UTEP 34
NMSU 19

That’s not a UFO or some stray missile from White Sands that has mysteriously landed in Las Cruces–it’s NMSUs football team, which disappeared altogether in 2020 before briefly resurfacing in spring with a couple of scrimmages/games. vs. transitioning and future WAC foes Tarleton State and Dixie State, splitting that pair of games actually played in El Paso while allowing 36 ppg. Note that only 2 starters remain from the last time the Ags played real games in 2019, though mobile juco QB Jonah Johnson did get a test run in spring. It could also get a lot worse later in the season for the Ags, who trek to Alabama in November, but we’ll worry about that one down the road. Meanwhile UTEP fans might be inclined to skip the simulcast racing card at Sunland Park to drive a few more miles west on I-10 to watch the Miners, who broke 3-1 last fall before Covid and other distractions derailed the campaign. Nonetheless, there are indicators that Dana Dimel (once upon a time considered an up-and-comer in the coaching ranks) has UTEP swinging its pick-axe back to respectability, after the D posted its best numbers since the height of the Mike Price era, and what looks like a viable collection of playmakers at the skill positions, led by QB Devin Hardison & RB Deion Hankins, who both performed with some flair in 2020. Yes, the Miners haven’t had to lay points away since the Obama years (2015)...but do you really want the Aggies?

UCONN 13
Fresno St 45

When last seen on the field, UConn was suffering its 36th loss in 39 games from mid-2017 to the end of the 2019 campaign. During the past 3 seasons in action, the Husky defense has given up 43 ppg and 534 ypg and is just 7-17 against the points (2018-19). No wonder the UConn athletic department decided to give HC Randy Edsall’s team a “timeout” and cancel Covid-2020 football. The Huskies’ soph QB Jack Zergiotis (1782 YP in 9 starts in 2019 with a 9-11 TD-int. count) inched in front for the starting position in early drills, but he will likely be on a short leash. The team has been turnover-prone under Edsell, posting a -41 in TO margin in Edsall’s first four seasons in Storrs. Fresno 2nd-year HC Kalen DeBoer has 19 starters back including sr. QB Jake Haener (ex-Washington Husky), who threw for 337 ypg against Mountain West competition last season. The Bulldogs also welcome back their top 8 pass catchers and have a serious ground threat in sr. all-MW RB Ronnie Rivers (5.1 ypc, 7 rush TDs in 6 Gs). This one could get away from the Huskies in a hurry, much to the delight of a very boisterous “Red Wave” sellout crowd.

Newsletter Tracking (through 11/02/2020) from Mendoza Line

Not every newsletter gets posted every week, and I'll try to note when the record doesn't include every week of the season. There were a few newsletters we didn't see this week, and a few with light action to start the season.

Another note is that the grading is based on the line indicated in the newsletter at the time of publication, not the closing line. Many of these newsletters will claim a win against the best available line as it moves throughout the week, but these records reflect the outcome against the line they were willing to make a play on in their newsletter.
