[h=1]Week 16 college football best bets: Notre Dame a big 'dog vs. Clemson[/h]Doug Kezirian (6-2 last week, 37-25 overall), Bill Connelly (1-1, 17-20), Preston Johnson (4-0-1, 27-18-1), David M. Hale (2-0, 17-19) and Seth Walder (0-0, 5-8) will provide their top plays across the college football landscape.
Here are their best bets for Week 16 of the college football season.
Note: Lines from Caesars Sportsbook by William Hill as of Wednesday (unless otherwise indicated).

[h=3]Air Force Falcons (-2.5, 37) at Army Black Knights, 3 p.m. ET (on CBSSN)[/h]Connelly: I don't understand why Air Force is the favorite. We have a healthy sample of what Army is capable of -- the Black Knights are 0-2 against SP+ top-50 teams, 8-0 against everyone else. Air Force has only played five games, and while the Falcons demolished the three teams they've played from outside the SP+ top 100 (average score: 34-5), they're 0-2 against teams in the top 70 (average score: 43-18). Army is 66th.
Rivalry rules and "when two option-happy service academy teams play each other, it's going to be a low-scoring slog" rules apply. But while Air Force appears to have some upside, I trust what Army's capable of. If you're betting on an underdog of fewer than three points, you better trust them to win outright, and I do.
Pick: Army +2.5
Hale: The safest bet in sports is the under in games between two service academies, 37-9-1 since 2005. Sure, bookmakers are aware of this, which is why the total is set so low, but who are we to argue with history? Indeed, Army's lackluster offense helps the cause, while Air Force has one of the best defenses in the country, allowing just 16 points per game.
Pick: Under 37

[h=3]No. 19 Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns at No. 12 Coastal Carolina Chanticleers (-3.5, 54.5), 3:30 p.m. ET (on ESPN)[/h](Sun Belt championship)
Kezirian: The first thing that warrants mentioning is that this is a home game for the Chants, which means they do not need to travel. This line just feels cheap and perhaps too much of an overreaction to last week's narrow victory over Troy. As I expressed in this column, I expected Coastal Carolina to be flat, coming off the monster win over BYU. The Ragin' Cajuns only have one loss this year, but they have had some shaky performances and escaped a few games. I think it finally catches up with them. The Chants won at Louisiana-Lafayette by three points during the regular season, and I expect a more convincing outcome this weekend.
Pick: Coastal Carolina -3.5

[h=3]Missouri Tigers (-1, 49.5) at Mississippi State Bulldogs, 3:30 p.m. ET (SEC Network ALT)[/h]Kezirian: This season cannot end soon enough for Mike Leach and the Bulldogs. After upsetting LSU in the opener, they have only mustered one win -- and that came over winless Vanderbilt. Leach also had some critical comments about the virus-impacted and "joyless" season, suggesting he has one eye already looking ahead to next season. Meanwhile, the Tigers are 6-4 in Eliah Drinkwitz's inaugural season, and they have a chance to enter the bowl season on a high note. I have a lot more faith in Drinkwitz preparing his team appropriately for this strange mid-December game than I do Leach.
Pick: Missouri -1

[h=3]No. 3 Clemson Tigers (-10.5, 60) vs. No. 2 Notre Dame Fighting Irish, 4 p.m. ET (on ABC)[/h](ACC championship)
Connelly: That Clemson basically fought Notre Dame to a draw in South Bend without its best player (Trevor Lawrence) and most important defender (James Skalski) suggests the Tigers should be favored on a neutral field. SP+ agrees, giving the five-time defending ACC champs a 5.5-point edge.
I'm not sure where the 10.5-point line comes from. Clemson has been in fifth gear since the loss, beating Pittsburgh and Virginia Tech by a combined 97-27. Notre Dame hasn't exactly been chopped liver since, either -- just two games ago, the Fighting Irish played probably their most impressive game of the year, shutting down North Carolina in the second half of a surprisingly easy 31-17 win. This is a much stronger Notre Dame team than the one that made the BCS Championship Game in 2012 or the one that made the College Football Playoff in 2018, and it would take an out-of-character performance for them to lose by double digits to anyone (besides maybe Alabama).
Pick: Notre Dame +10.5
Hale: The first meeting featured a Clemson team without Lawrence, Skalski, Tyler Davis and Mike Jones, and it still went to two overtimes. That has led to a pretty simple narrative: A full-strength Clemson team will win the rematch easily. But the Fighting Irish are better at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball. The O-line has been dominant all year, aided by Ian Book's scrambling ability. And the defensive front stifled Clemson's ground game in the first matchup, holding Travis Etienne to just 28 yards on 18 carries. That might change with Notre Dame facing a healthy Lawrence. But Clemson's receiving corps doesn't intimidate, and the Tigers' O-line has struggled to run-block consistently. Add it all up, and Notre Dame has its share of matchup advantages that can't just be shrugged off because the previous game was so close. Clemson might win, but a double-digit victory seems awfully optimistic.
Pick: Notre Dame +10.5
Kezirian: I understand freshman quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei played well filling in for Lawrence in the loss in South Bend. However, Lawrence is projected as the top overall NFL pick for a reason and the Tigers will benefit accordingly. But this Notre Dame team is legitimate and much more qualified for the championship discussion than in recent years. Book and the offense will experience plenty of success, and I expect another high-scoring affair.
Pick: Over 61

[h=3]No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide (-17, 74.5) vs. No. 7 Florida Gators, 8 p.m. ET (on CBS)[/h](SEC championship)
Kezirian: What is left to say about Alabama? The Tide own the nation's most potent offense and possess the Heisman Trophy betting favorite and the player with the second-lowest odds. They have also covered seven straight games. They are an absolute juggernaut, and nothing suggests Florida will keep this within the number. However, I just do not feel like paying the tax following UF's loss at LSU. Florida tight end Kyle Pitts missed that game and that limited the Gators, particularly because they have such trouble running the ball. Pitts will play against Alabama, but it's still not enough for me. I think Alabama's offense is the most reliable component to this matchup, and I will bet on that. I also think a wager on Mac Jones to win the Heisman (-155) presents value, given the circumstances. He's the QB of a team that's a 17-point favorite this weekend, and he has 27 TD passes with just three interceptions.
Pick: Alabama team total over 45.5 (at DraftKings)

[h=3]Arizona State Sun Devils (-7, 54) at Oregon State Beavers, 10:30 p.m. ET (on ESPN)[/h]Connelly: SP+ had faith in Arizona State even before the Sun Devils ended the Kevin Sumlin era at Arizona with a 70-7 win over their chief rivals.
Granted, Oregon State has been solid, too. The Beavers are 2-4, but every loss -- every game for that matter -- has been decided by 10 or fewer points. They're beating both SP+ projections and the line by 4-5 points per game. But the defense is awfully inefficient, especially against the run, and Arizona State's offense ranks first in rushing success rate and first in three-and-out percentage. I'm excited to watch the unexpectedly great running back duo of DeaMonte Trayanum and Rachaad White one more time, and I think the Sun Devils win by 10-14 points.
Pick: Arizona State -7

[h=1]Stanford Steve and The Bear: Week 16 college football picks, bets, nuggets[/h]College football is in full swing in 2020, and it's unlike any season we have had before. One thing is familiar, though: Stanford Steve Coughlin and Chris "The Bear" Fallica breaking down games as only they can, offering their top bets, nuggets and totals worth wagering on. How will the guys fare this week?
Here is your guide to Week 16 from the two college football analysts. (Games postponed or canceled because of COVID-19 have been removed.)
Records

  • Stanford Steve (2-1-1 last week, 26-16-1 overall)
  • The Bear (0-2-1, 22-20-1)

[h=3]No. 3 Clemson Tigers (-10.5, 60) vs. No. 2 Notre Dame Fighting Irish[/h](ACC championship at Charlotte, N.C.)
Stanford Steve: Clemson has gotten everything it has wanted since losing to the Irish earlier this year in overtime at South Bend without Trevor Lawrence. I still think the Irish will win the game. We will sprinkle a little on the money line, but we will take the points as the official play.
Pick: Notre Dame +10.5 (Notre Dame 31, Clemson 29)

[h=3]No. 10 Oklahoma Sooners (-5.5, 58) vs. No. 6 Iowa State Cyclones[/h](Big 12 championship at Arlington, Texas)
Stanford Steve: Here's another Power 5 championship game where the team looking to avenge an earlier loss is favored to win the rematch (Clemson is the other). I think the wrong team is favored. I am not buying into the idea that Oklahoma "has everything figured out" and will be the Big 12 champ. I'll take the Clones and the points.
Pick: Iowa State +5.5 (Iowa State 34, Oklahoma 31)

[h=3]Oregon Ducks at No. 13 USC Trojans (-3, 64)[/h](Pac-12 championship)
Stanford Steve: Remember last year when the Utah Utes were a win in the Pac-12 title game away from making the College Football Playoff? Then they went out and played their worst game of the year in a spot where they had the most eyeballs on them in any of their games. It feels like USC is getting plenty of love in the general landscape of the sport, and I would be the first person to tell you the Trojans should be ranked higher. But this line doesn't make sense. It feels like the undefeated Men of Troy should be giving more points. We'll take the Ducks and buy it to 3.5 points.
Pick: Buy Oregon to +3.5 (USC 38, Oregon 35)

[h=3]Ball State Cardinals at Buffalo Bulls (-13.5, 67.5)[/h]The Bear: Buffalo has been a dominant team spearheaded by a powerful running attack. But it also benefited from being on the weaker side of the MAC-- the one with Akron and Bowling Green it its division. Ball State has finally gotten some breaks this year and easily could be undefeated as well. Mike Neu has a veteran team and is probably the best rush defense Buffalo has faced this year. The outright upset will be tough, but I do think Ball State will be able to get a few stops and score enough to cover the number here.
Pick: Ball State +13.5

[h=3]Nebraska Cornhuskers (-6.5, 54) at Rutgers Scarlet Knights[/h]The Bear: This number jumped off the page to me when I saw it. I couldn't believe Nebraska was laying this many points. The Huskers haven't been a good favorite at all, might be faced with travel issues because of a storm in the northeast and seem to be in a bad spot here. I'll side with the State University of New Jersey, which if it wins four games would be ecstatic and a remarkable feat under Greg Schiano. Rutgers has showed up every game and Nebraska transfer QB Noah Vedral will want to play well against his former team. I think the intangibles and coaching edge land on the side of the Scarlet Knights.
Pick: Rutgers +6.5

[h=3]Air Force Falcons (-2.5, 37) at Army Black Knights[/h]The Bear: I'm guessing people are expecting a letdown for Army on the heels of the shutout win over Navy and might be comparing scores to the 40-7 win Air Force had over the Midshipmen. But that's hard to do, being the weather was brutal in West Point last week and the CIC trophy is on the line. I don't really understand the 2.5-point move to Air Force here and will happily take Army and the points.
Pick: Army +2.5

*My sense is these three underdogs either win outright or the favorite covers

[h=2]Stanford Steve's special Week 16 3-team, 10-point teaser[/h]Wisconsin -2
Rutgers +16.5
Utah -.5

[h=2]Bear Bytes[/h]• Since 2015, there have been 23 Power 5 conference championship games. Just two underdogs have won outright: Oregon beat Utah last year and Penn State defeated Wisconsin in 2016. Compare that to the Group of Five, where in the last two years four dogs have won outright in 10 games. It should be noted that three of the underdogs were by a field goal or less. Favorites are 5-12-1 ATS in Group of Five conference title games in the last four years.
Big 12 championship: No. 10 Oklahoma Sooners (-5.5, 58) vs. No. 6 Iowa State Cyclones
• Under Matt Campbell, the Cyclones have covered all five games vs. Oklahoma, four as a double-digit dog. On average, the Cyclones were an 18-point underdog and have two wins and have covered by an average of 16.7 PPG in those five games.
Nebraska (-6.5, 54) at Rutgers
• Nebraska is 5-14 ATS with eight outright losses since the start of 2017 as a favorite. Nebraska has lost four of its last five games outright as a favorite.
Air Force (-2.5, 37) at Army
• In the past nine years, the favorite is 1-7-1 ATS with four outright losses in this rivalry.
American Athletic championship: No. 23 Tulsa Golden Hurricane at No.9 Cincinnati Bearcats (-14, 45.5)
• In its last 11 games as an underdog, Tulsa is 9-2 ATS with four outright wins. Over that span, Tulsa has been a double-digit dog nine times and has two wins and three other single-digit losses. Last year the Bearcats were a 16-point favorite over Tulsa at Nippert Stadium and won by 11. The Golden Hurricane are also 7-0 ATS vs. ranked opponents since 2018.
Big Ten championship: No. 14 Northwestern Wildcats vs. No. 4 Ohio State Buckeyes (-205., 57)
• The Buckeyes have been a 20-point favorite 13 times under Ryan Day and are 8-5 ATS and have seen just one game decided by less than 11 points (42-35 vs. Indiana earlier this year).
ACC championship: Clemson (-10.5, 60) vs. Notre Dame
• Clemson is currently a 10.5-point favorite over Notre Dame. That's the exact same spread from the 2018 semifinal game where Clemson beat Notre Dame 30-3. Clemson has won 41 straight games as a double-digit favorite dating back to the 2017 loss at Syracuse. Just four of the 41 games were decided by single digits.
MAC championship: Ball State vs. Buffalo (-13.5, 67.5)
• Ball State has covered each of its last six games as an underdog, winning four outright. And double-digit favorites in the MAC title game are just 1-8 ATS with three outright losses. However, Buffalo has been a strong favorite lately, covering 11 of its past 13.

ESPN posted additional picks since Thursday AM:
[h=3]No. 14 Northwestern Wildcats at No. 4 Ohio State Buckeyes (-20.5, 57.5), Noon ET (on FOX)[/h]Johnson: Northwestern is 6-1 not because of its offense, which ranks 91st in the country in EPA and 107th in success rate, but because of its elite defense. Only three other teams in the country rank top 8 in both EPA and success rate defensively: Wisconsin, Cincinnati, and Clemson -- pretty good company to be in. The Wildcats rank No. 2 in EPA per pass play, which is about as good as we can hope for going up against Justin Fields and the Buckeyes' passing attack. Northwestern's defense is slightly weaker on the ground, but Ohio State hasn't been as effective there this year after losing multiple offensive linemen and J.K. Dobbins to the NFL.
<offer style="box-sizing: border-box;"></offer>
The reputation for the Buckeyes this season is that their defense has holes (which is true to some extent, especially in the secondary). They still grade out as a top-15 overall defense for me, however, and they rank No. 2 in EPA per rush. I ultimately don't anticipate Peyton Ramsey and this Wildcats offense taking advantage of the Ohio State weaknesses enough, and my projection for the matchup is closer to 54. I'm betting under.
Pick: Under 57.5
[h=3]No. 23 Tulsa Golden Hurricane at No. 9 Cincinnati Bearcats(-14.5, 45.5), 8 p.m. ET (on ABC)[/h]Johnson: The perception surrounding the Golden Hurricane is that they have been lucky all season. They have trailed by double-digits in four games this season that they came back and won. Maybe some of that can be attributed to luck, but I think a good portion of it can also be attributed to a stellar defensive unit that has been making elite adjustments in second halves and giving their offense opportunities to make those comebacks. Take a look at the UCF game, for example. The Knights have had one of the best offenses in the country year after year, and to go on the road and limit them to three total points in the second half and win outright as a massive favorite is impressive -- and telling.
The Hurricane rank top 15 defensively both in EPA and success rate. Speaking of UCF, do you know the best defense this Cincinnati team has faced so far this season? That's right, and the Knights rank 46th in EPA and 73rd in success rate themselves. This Tulsa defense is multiple tiers above anything the Bearcats have been tested by this season. Similarly rated offenses like Oklahoma State, SMU and UCF averaged just 22 points per game in matchups against Tulsa this year. It's going to be tough for Cincinnati -- which will not have played a game in nearly a month, by the way -- to win this one by more than two scores. I took the valuable points.
Pick: Tulsa +14.5
