TECHNICAL PLAYS OF THE WEEK
MISSISSIPPI STATE
We acknowledge a potential upgrade at UAB for new HC Bill Clark. But until further notice we prefer to ride HC Dan Mullen's rampaging Mississippi State bunch that picked up where it left off last season in an opening romp past another C-USA rep, Southern Miss. Still must note some of the Blazers' recent failings, including a subpar 1-6 spread mark getting 20 points or more the past two seasons, and only 3-8 as a visiting dog since 2012. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs have now covered six straight since late last season, and have covered 5 of 7 laying 20 or more since 2011.
UTAH
Recent trends are a bit disturbing for Fresno State, which has seen its pointspread fortunes decline considerably since late in the 2012 season. To wit: the Bulldogs are now 4-10-1 in their last 15 games against the spread, which does not bode well for HC Tim DeRuyter's troops as they head to Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City for a Saturday battle against revitalized Utah. After last week's romp past Idaho State, the Utes have now covered six straight and nine of their last eleven against non-Pac 12 opposition.
MICHIGAN STATE
Although we are not usually looking for spots to go against high-flying Oregon, the chance to go with Michigan State plus the points is too much to bypass for Saturday's game at Autzen Stadium. That's because the Spartans have been one of the nation's premier underdog performers for a while, covering their last seven tries as the "short" over the past two seasons and 9-2 against the line receiving points since 2011. Those numbers qualify MSU as a recommendation in numerous tech systems, including Power Underdogs and College Coach as Underdog, with HC Mark Dantonio, this week. Also note that the host Ducks have now dropped seven straight regular-season decisions against the number.
UCLA
After getting a bit of a scare last week at Virginia, expect UCLA to bounce back with a vengeance on Saturday night at the Rose Bowl when hosting Memphis. Laying big numbers has not been a problem lately for the Bruins, who were 4-1 against the mark as 20-point or more chalk the past two seasons under HC Jim Mora. Going back considerably further, UCLA has posted some of the most impressive home pointspread marks in the nation over the past decade, with a 41-21 record against the line at home since early in the 2004 campaign. The Bruins are also a featured College Coach & Pointspread recommendation with Mora this week.
SAN FRANCISCO
One of the most eye-opening NFL teams trends last season was San Francisco's prowess on the road...especially laying points. The 49ers were 6-0 as road chalk last season and have posted a superb 19-8-2 spread mark away from home since HC Jim Harbaugh arrived in 2011. That all bodes well for San Francisco in Sunday's opener at Jerry Jones AT&T Stadium against host Dallas. Note that Jones' Cowboys are just 8-17 vs. the number their last 25 at Arlington.
INDY-DEN "OVER"
"Over" was certainly the proper call last season in a shootout between Indianapolis and Denver at Lucas Oil Stadium and should be so again for the 2014 rematch at Sports Authority Field. After all, "over" has been the recommended "total" in Broncos games since before Peyton Manning arrived in 2012, as Denver is "over" 25-12 its last 27 at home and "over" 47-25-1 in all games since late in the 2009 season.
