You are right, Cheerleaders in the NFL (and I believe in all professional sports), are not allowed to date the players or coaches, because it's a distraction. This is actually in their contracts. This don't stop most of them though. I recall during training camp a Cheerleader waited for me by my car after a preseason game in order to introduce herself to me. It seems her dad use to play for the saints and wore my number. Lucky me!
Most of the cheerleaders are not whores. Most of them are very good women. Every team has a couple that are whorish though. Those cheerleaders don't get paid very much so when you have the opportunity to date an athlete who makes millions of dollars, you tend to take advantage of the opportunity. Not sure who wouldn't.
I honestly wasn't a fan of Jim Hasslet. I signed with the saints by way of the Arena league so in practice whenever someone was playing well he would threaten them by saying things like " if you keep that up, you'll be in the arena league by next week". It was an insult to me even though he wasn't referring to me.

Yeah NFL cheerleaders are usually just doing it because of the notoriety, put it on their resume, get networking opportunities at charity events, etc
In the NBA they aren't really cheerleaders though, moreso they just all come from a dancing background and are down to have a train run on them at any time. Ok I made that last part up...
