Jacko's body of work has spanned over 40 years. It would be tough for anyone to touch the global fanbase he has amassed.

Bono is pretty large globally but he only reaches a certain generation.

Paul McCartney would be huge but it wouldn't be close to Jacko because he wasn't as successful as a solo artist. (I think his only hits after the Beatles were colaborations with Jacko and Stevie Wonder). Had the entire Beatles died in a plane crash or something then it could match Jacko's circus.

As much as I hate to say it. The one guy who is globally recoginized right now even in the poorer countries would be David Beckham. Us Americans may not feel the hype but all of the other soccer playing countries would feel the impact.

I would think maybe if Madonna were to go now, while still a musical icon, she would get a huge media frenzy and celebrity turnout....but she's not on the level of MJ , no doubt....but she's pretty high on the female side for celebs..

Jackos' work does not span 40 years. What did he do musically in the last 10 years? Or really even closer to 20 years? Really faded musically since the 80's. But Thriller was the most important album of the generation.

You have to remember kids all over the world are listening to his music for the first time. When parents introduce their children to music they start with the Jackson 5 and Michael Jackson. Shit I wouldn't doubt when we provide charity of food, clothes and missionary to third world countries we drop 100's of copies of Michael Jackson Thriller album in there too.

The Godfather was made in 1972 but if you show it to a 15 year old today he will rank it up near the top of greatest movies of all times. Some things are timeless and Michael Jackson happened to be one of those things.

Some of the rock legends will get close, unfortunately Jackson beat them to the finish line.

Jagger
McCarthy
Elton John
Bono
Madonna
Anastasio

A lot depends on the time, place, and manner.

If we're going beyong musicians, then obviously Obama would be the correct answer. It would be nonstop coverage maybe for months. Probably Bill Clinton too.

As for athletes, Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods would have to enter the equation.

well, his Got to Be There was released in 1972 and his last album Invincible was released in 2001, and the Jackson 5 released their debut in '69. So that's about 32-33 yrs right there. And considering that he was now about to do that final tour this year, I'd say his work spans 40 yrs give or take. But yes, there's been spans during that time frame where he wasn't AS productive as he used to be earlier in his career

the only thing that would surpass it globally would be ( god forbid ) an obama assasination...

and quite frankly , i'm not even sure it would... doubt too many people in some other areas would give a shit.

possibly over a billion people tuned in for this ...

Isn't it an oxymoron how black people can be the most loved and appreciated people in the entire world while at the same time be the most hated.

I truly don't understand it considering black people typically aren't serial killers, child molesters, savings embezzelers or rapists. The main crimes black people commit they do it their own kind.

Yeah maybe should have left Dan off. I think the rest is not bad though, hardly out of touch with reality.

I am pretty sure that in Italy they don't curse a black man by saying "Fuckin American". It probably sounds more like "fuckin ni**er".

If your talking universally though, the majority of the world is brown.

And the majority of the world hates America.

So I would say any American, maybe even any white American may be the most hated globally.

like i said, its not quantifable and is a pointless statement anyways.

Mandela had a pretty big birthday concert one time.

Who was the female lead singer for the last Heel the World song?

If the US ever catches Bin Laden and decides to execute him, then you might see double the coverage and world-wide attention...

But he ain't no celebrity...
