I am 35 , and I`m not doing it to get in shape, I am in shape. But not that kind of shape, I ran a half mile in 2:30 last winter when I was attempting it then...So I was half way there, albeit the easier half...

scotty baby, you have a very good memory.. I can't believe you remember that.

Journey, you have no chance at running a mile in 5 min.. I will lay any odds on that.. Unless you are an Ethiopian, Kenyan, or a Nigerian, and you weigh 104 lbs and are pure bones, then you might have a chance. Being 208 does not help having to carry all that weight with you. You might be able to do 2 miles in 2:30, but keeping that pace up for the whole mile is not possible. Your pace will slow down and you might hit the last half mile in 3:30 and end up with a 6 min mile, if you're lucky. You will need years and years and years of training to do this. Also, you have to eat well too, VERY IMPORTANT. Right before my run, i only eat good carbs for energy, like toast, cereal, water. NO FAT, NO SUGAR, NO SALT. Sugar is the worst thing you can eat before a run as it does the body no good. There is no nutrients in sugar. Make sure you eat well before that run, so you can last longer. Don't eat a chinese buffet, and have 6 pieces of chocolate cake before you run. And you must digest at least 1 to 1.5 hrs before any run. I hope you don't just eat, then run, or you will puke. Even running on an empty stomach is good. Also, don't make the same mistake as me and not stretch well before the run. Boy am i feeling it now on my legs. I am so sore every night because of it. I am lucky I didn't injure myself.

I never realized it was such a science...I just would drive to the track and run! I don t even have what I would call running shoes...But then again I am not your average Joe....Someone said 1-1000 are capable of doing this , well what are the odds for someone Bench Pressing 400lbs at 208!? For the record I don`t think I can do this either...But I will try...it was quite a battle just to get 2:30 at the half mile mark, I mean I was dead after that half mile....I figure though just maintaining that pace and extending maybe 10 yards a day, thats how I got to that point , I would basically all out run as far as I could and try to go 5-10 yards further each night....I will report back , I am going to do 1 lap tonight and I will report back my time. LOL, trust me it will be horrible the first two weeks my time will be real slow, I won`t overdue it, I`ll probably go around once at like 1:30(which is not good at all...I have pretty good stamina from cycling basically everyday...I like this topic its motivational, and who knows maybe someone else will be inspired! You don`t have to get better overnight, its one step at a time...I didn`t go out and Bench Press 400 lbs in one day, it took me a good 17 years to do that...I rermember when I would go to the gym and I couldn`t even use the Bench Press (the minimum requirement was 135 and I couldn`t budge 135 at one time) point is anything can happen ONE STEP AT A TIME!

go to the local college near you and run a workout with the distance girls. Surely you won't let a girl beat you

no problem unless you have more than 20% body fat, if you are over 10% its going to be hard, I ran in college, I put in a 4:22, I ran 5min mile repeats, glad I dont have to do it any more, you will need three things, a general fitness or aerobic base, speed work on the track as in 200 to 1000m repeats, aka, you will want your mama after these sessions, and of course a lean, body type, if you want to get serious I can give you a plan from 4weeks to 6 months if you are outta shape, glad to help I love to run and help others run fast

I am not out of shape, but I am not a runner , I don`t like running really,lol... I want to force myself to run and make it to this goal...I am 5-10 208, body fat I`d guess around 10%....

Here is how I wnet about it...It was no great plan but it was working....I would start at 1 lap around the track, my goal was to reach the 5 minute pace( 1:15 per lap) well I had worked up to a 2:30 for a half mile...But I was dead after that...I stopped really because last winter was so cold and icy....My goal after that was to add say 10yards a day, just a simple 10 yards until I reached the full mile...I am from the philosophy just a step at a time...That is how I go about strength training 1 lb at a time!

Hey kengman, are they married? Those women are my dream women.. Nothing better than being with a woman who is in that kinda shape and care about their bodies like that and are athletic. Imagine how saturday nights would be.. Hey honey, you wanna go out tonight for dinner and a movie? No sweetie, I rather just go out tonight together for a 12 mile run, then come home and put a movie on and cuddle. Wow!! Kengman, fix me up with one of them. How about it kengman? Do your sisters want some Sick Gambler lovin..

I'm sorry, but I can't let this thread die. It is my inspiration to continue running. I need some boost and this is how I will keep it, by reading this thread.

I need some tips please. I just came back from a planned 6 mile run, and I thought I was going to die after 3.5 miles. I was clutching my heart. I had to come straight home. What is going on here? I usually have no problem doing at least 5 miles.. But lately, I've been not sleeping at all, or sleeping very very late. I've been going out alot till late and eating out in restaurants too much. I sleep at 6 am everyday, and wake up only at 11 am, 7 days a week...

Could this be hurting me boys? Is this lack of sleep catching up to me? Is lots of rest and sleeping early and eating healthy that important to be able to run well?

Sad, but I might have to change my whole lifestyle now because of this. I really don't want to.

Any opinions? thanks..

Sick let me ask you , since we are around the same age....the past year or so I have felt horrible when I wake up, I am very stiff and my whole body aches, and I can tell when i really exerted myself the previous day...What I`d like is someone to recommend some kind of nutrient to prevent this morning "illness" I`m dealing with, the first half hour in the morning I feel like I`m 105 years old!

My first week back I ran 1/4 mile in 1:30 I am not pushing it...I will continue to run an extra 10 yards a day til I work up to a mile...First I have to reach 1:15 for the 1/4 mark....But the morning stiffness has me worried about the future, maybe all the heavy weightlifting has taken its toll...

thanks cheat. I was always good since age 11. I had national age records at 13 and 14. Here are other best times that I can impress you with.
1/2 mile---1:50
2 mile----8:48 (in practice Freshman year at college)
5000 meters----13:57
10,000 meters---29:17

As good as I was, there was definitely much better, especially the Africans and Europeans.

Doug from BlueGrass is trying something similar. All it's going to take is practice, self determination and money on the line.

Good luck Journeyman, I believe you'll be able to achieve it.

OK Journeyman, we need an update. Be honest now. You kinda quit trying after about a week because those huge arms of steel just keeps tiring you out huh?

Seriously. I would like to know how close you came.

Damn Kengam, you're the man! We have a world class athlete posting here. Seriously, that's great times. I played other sports and never track but ran LSD (long slow distance) to stay in shape, when tested I could run 1.5 miles in 9 minutes without really killing myself. I was always proud of that and this guy runs 2 miles in 8:48!?

I respect people who achieve goals, nice thread men. Hope you run a 5 minute mile one day JMan. My next 5 minute mile I'll be pedaling my ass off...

Sorry to say I just haven`t had the time...Plus I`m walking about 5 miles a day as it is which tears the hell out of my joints...I have come to realize my best days physically are behind me
icon_frown.gif
I doubt I could afford to waste that much time and energy at this time....I think all those years on the sandlots, basketball courts and soccer fields have taken their toll, not to mention 20 years of heavy weightlifting, bottom line my joints just aren`t able to answer the bell anymore....Some mornings I feel like Jim Otto trying to get out of bed....I have to be smarter about it, I ave to realize I am old...My body still looks 25 but it feels 50, boys I am really worried about my joints,lol..Maybe I need some sortive supplement for joint revitilzation...I don`t even know if there is such a thing....I`ll stick to the bicycle, even though recently someone said that may lead to prostate troubles

well even if you didn't accomplish your goal it seems like your post has led others to try to set and reach athletic goals of their own.

Thanks Pat Mc. I am still in good running shape, but moderate back problems keep me from competing at a high level. I was good, but I worked very hard at it.
