Saves and closers are extremely over-rated . It certainly would be nice to have a Rivera/ Chapman/ Kimbrel/ Hoffman/ Gossage type of guy available come playoff time but not absolutely essential, they are not infallible, monies better spent on an ace , or at least top 30 type sort of starter that you can rely on for 25+ starts and 175 + innings, and once into the playoffs let the chips fall wherever they may.
There was once a time when starters oftenly pitched complete games or went like 8 innings frequently, in the old days a guy might even have pitched both games of a double header, now 7 innings is exceptional ! Most modern teams carry 13 pitchers, or more than half of the 25 man allotment , so 8 relievers usually and a few more in the wings in the minors with options that can be brought up if needed/ sent down at will and cost virtually nothing relatively
It all combines to make the concept of paying a Kimbrel some absurd salary like 6/120 ( probably what he really wants ? ) Patently insane, especially for a rapidly aging 60 inning guy considering the methods teams now use to evaulate a player's true value
