Tigers vs Mariners

Bonus Play Detroit Tigers

I'm backing the Tigers on Monday night. Hisashi Iwakuma is 12-7 with a 3.99 ERA and has been effective against most teams, but Detroit is not one of them. The Tigers scored five runs with 11 hits in 4 2/3 innings earlier this season against him and last year Iwakuma gave up seven runs and 14 hits in 12 innings against Detroit. Six players on the Tigers roster have at least a .375 batting average against the right-hander. Michael Fulmer continues his terrific rookie season and the Tigers have won his last seven starts, including a 2-1 win over the White Sox on Wednesday when he allowed just one run and five hits in 6 2/3 innings. Fulmer faced the Mariners once this season and gave up a run and three hits in 4 1/3 innings. Detroit lost to the Mets yesterday but the Tigers still have won 10 of their last 12 games and are just two games behind first-place Cleveland in AL Central. I'm backing the Tigers on Monday night. Thanks & GL! Scott Spreitzer.

Rangers vs Rockies

5* MLB Free Pick Texas Rangers

The Texas Rangers and the Colorado Rockies will do battle in the opener of a four-game home-and-home series Monday night. The AL West-leading Rangers have won seven of their last 10, and I like them to keep that momentum going here in the Rocky Mountains.

Cole Hamels (12-3, 2.89 ERA) takes the ball for Texas. He's 4-4 lifetime with a 3.21 ERA against the Rockies, but he has their current members limited to a combined .184 batting average over 98 at bats. We can also note that Colorado is 1-7 in its last eight interleague home games vs. a left-handed starter.

Colorado turns to another left-hander in Tyler Anderson (4-3, 3.25). The 26 year old rookie has logged three straight quality starts (against Dodgers, Mets and Braves), but the Rangers' bats he'll see tonight will be something else as Texas is batting a major leagues-best .281 against southpaws this season and 7-3 in its last 10 interleague games vs. a left-handed starter.

The Rangers are 16-3 in Hamels' last 19 starts vs. a team with a losing record, and I think we're getting a great price on the better team with their ace on the mound tonight.

Rangers vs Rockies

Play - Texas Rangers w/Hamels

Edges - Rangers: Cole Hamels 1.90 ERA with a 1.10 WHIP away this season; and 12-5 last 17 away team starts during August. Rockies: Tyler Anderson 1-3 as a dog this season. With Hamels 3-1 in his last 4 team starts in this park, we recommend a 1* play on Texas. Thank you and good luck as always.

Preview: Rays at Blue Jays

GAME: Tampa Bay Rays (45-65) at Toronto Blue Jays (63-49)
DATE/TIME: Monday, August 08 - 7:07 PM EST
WHERE: Rogers Centre, Toronto, Ontario
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Toronto Blue Jays look to get their offense back in gear when they begin a six-game homestand with the first of three against the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday. The Blue Jays have recorded 19 runs in the last eight contests and just three in two straight losses at Kansas City over the weekend that have them sitting one game behind first-place Baltimore in the American League East.

“We really haven’t been swinging that good since the beginning of the last homestand,” Toronto manager John Gibbons told reporters. “We’ve been in kind of a rut, so we’re due to explode.” That won’t be easy against Tampa Bay’s scheduled Monday starter Jake Odorizzi, who has not allowed a run in three straight games spanning 20 2/3 innings. The last-place Rays have also won six of their last eight contests against the Blue Jays, including a three-game sweep May 16-18 in Toronto. Tampa Bay shortstop Brad Miller, who is slated to move to first base when Matt Duffy completes his rehab stint, is 8-for-21 with three homers and seven RBIs during a six-game hitting streak.

TV: 7:07 p.m. ET, FSN Sun (Tampa Bay), Sportsnet (Toronto), TVA Sports (Toronto)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rays RH Jake Odorizzi (6-5, 3.70 ERA) vs. Blue Jays RH R.A. Dickey (8-12, 4.49)

Odorizzi has been one of the league’s best pitchers since the All-Star break, going 3-0 with two runs allowed over 26 2/3 total innings with 23 strikeouts and three walks. The 26-year-old boasts 121 strikeouts overall with 37 bases on balls across 131 1/3 frames. Josh Donaldson is 3-for-14 – with all three hits leaving the park – against Odorizzi, who is 1-0 with a 2.04 ERA in three starts versus Toronto this season.

Dickey snapped a three-game losing streak Tuesday when he permitted one run on six hits and no walks over seven innings to defeat Houston. The 41-year-old knuckleballer has struggled at home all season, going 2-8 with a 5.40 ERA in 12 games at Rogers Centre. Evan Longoria is 14-for-49 with two homers and eight RBIs versus Dickey, who is 1-1 with a 5.73 ERA in two games against Tampa Bay in 2016.

WALK-OFFS

1. Longoria has homered in back-to-back games to reach 25 on the season -- his highest total since 2013 when he finished with 32.

2. Toronto LF and former Ray Melvin Upton Jr. is just 4-for-32 with no extra-base hits in 11 games since being acquired from San Diego.

3. Tampa Bay CF Mikie Mahtook (hand) went 2-for-3 on Sunday in his first major-league game since June 20.

Preview: Giants at Marlins

GAME: San Francisco Giants (63-48) at Miami Marlins (59-52)
DATE/TIME: Monday, August 08 - 7:10 PM EST
WHERE: Marlins Park, Miami, Florida
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The San Francisco Giants seemingly only know how to play close games at Marlins Park, and it is highly likely they'll be in for more of the same Monday as they visit the Miami Marlins for the opener of their three-game series. The Giants and Marlins have squared off 13 times since the stadium opened in 2012, and 10 of the contests have been decided by two runs or fewer.

National League Cy Young Award candidates Johnny Cueto of the Giants and Jose Fernandez of the Marlins are scheduled to square off and have combined to hold the opposition to two or fewer runs in 28 of their 43 starts this season, although neither managed to win his last time out. San Francisco fell to 6-15 since the All-Star break following Sunday's 1-0 loss in Washington and holds only a one-game lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West. The Marlins (59-52) rebounded from a three-game sweep by the Cubs in Chicago by taking two of three in Colorado over the weekend and have a one-game edge over St. Louis in the race for the NL's second wild-card spot. Miami saw another high-profile chase come to an end in Sunday's victory over the Rockies, as Ichiro Suzuki became the fourth player born outside the United States and 30th in major-league history to reach 3,000 hits.

TV: 7:10 p.m. ET, MLB Network, CSN Bay Area (San Francisco), FSN Florida (Miami)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Giants RH Johnny Cueto (13-3, 2.73 ERA) vs. Marlins RH Jose Fernandez (12-6, 2.87)

Despite striking out 10, Cueto saw his winless streak reach four starts and settled for a no-decision Wednesday in Philadelphia after giving up four runs and seven hits over 7 2/3 innings. The two-time All-Star, who is 8-1 with a 2.82 ERA in 12 road turns, has yielded at least four runs in four of his last seven outings after doing so only twice through his first 15. Cueto allowed five runs - three earned - over five frames in a setback versus the Marlins last season, falling to 4-2 with a 4.18 ERA in eight career starts against them.

Fernandez, who surrendered three runs in six innings during Tuesday's loss to the Cubs, has dropped consecutive starts in the same season for only the second time in his career. The 2013 NL Rookie of the Year is eight strikeouts shy of 200 and returns to Miami hoping he can improve upon his brilliant 26-2 record and 1.62 ERA in 38 career starts at home. Fernandez took the loss in San Francisco on April 23 after allowing four runs in six frames, falling to 1-1 with a 5.25 ERA in two turns versus the Giants.

WALK-OFFS

1. Suzuki, who became the second-oldest major-league player to reach the 3,000-hit plateau, joined Hall-of-Famer - and former hitting coach - Paul Molitor as the only players to do so with a triple.

2. San Francisco has lost three of Cueto's last four starts after winning 16 of his first 18.

3. Miami LHP Hunter Cervenka, who was acquired from Atlanta on Saturday, debuted with a perfect sixth inning on Sunday and has stranded 25 of the last 29 baserunners he has inherited.

Preview: Braves at Brewers

GAME: Atlanta Braves (41-70) at Milwaukee Brewers (49-60)
DATE/TIME: Monday, August 08 - 7:20 PM EST
WHERE: Miller Park, Milwaukee, Wisconsin
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Atlanta Braves have struggled offensively all season, but hot streaks from Ender Inciarte and Erick Aybar have the team scoring runs in bunches entering the opener of a four-game series Monday at the Milwaukee Brewers. The Braves are 8-4 in their past 12 games, averaging five runs and 10.3 hits while batting .300 as a team, as Inciarte (career-high tying 18 games) and Aybar (12 games) ride hitting streaks into the series opener.

Atlanta opened a 10-game road trip by taking two of three in St. Louis over the weekend and are 10-12 since the All-Star break. The Brewers have lost four of six since going 6-1 in their previous seven games, losing two of three this weekend at Arizona. Rookie center fielder Keon Broxton reached base nine times in the series and is hitting .387 with seven walks, three doubles, two homers and seven RBIs in his past 12 games. Milwaukee leads the majors in stolen bases (116), led by Jonathan Villar, who stole two bases Sunday and opens the week tied with Cincinnati’s Billy Hamilton for the major-league lead (43).

TV: 7:20 p.m. ET, FSN Southeast (Atlanta), FSN Wisconsin (Milwaukee)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Braves RH Rob Whalen (1-0, 7.20 ERA) vs. Brewers RH Zach Davies (9-4, 3.57)

The 22-year-old Whalen showed plenty of nerves in the first inning of his major-league debut Wednesday, allowing four first-inning runs before settling down and shutting out Pittsburgh over his final four frames. He gave up four hits and walked four but struck out five and earned the win as the Braves rallied. Whalen went 7-6 with a 2.40 ERA in 21 starts between Double-A Mississippi and Triple-A Gwinnett.

Davies has impressed in his first full major-league season, posting a 1.19 WHIP while averaging 3.07 strikeouts for every walk issued. The 23-year-old is 4-0 in his past five starts with a 1.97 ERA and has surrendered more than two earned runs only once in his last 12 outings. He beat San Diego on Wednesday, allowing two runs on six hits with four strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings.

WALK-OFFS

1. Milwaukee RF Ryan Braun has hits in 14 of 17 games since the All-Star break, batting .328 with five homers and 12 RBIs during that stretch.

2. Despite their recent upswing, the Braves are last in the majors in runs scored (395), homers (70) and RBIs (374).

3. Inciarte has hits in 24 of his past 25 games and is batting .380 during his 18-game hitting streak, tying a career high set in July 29-August 18, 2014.

Preview: Astros at Twins

GAME: Houston Astros (57-54) at Minnesota Twins (45-66)
DATE/TIME: Monday, August 08 - 8:10 PM EST
WHERE: Target Field, Minneapolis, Minnesota
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The pressure has been off the Minnesota Twins for a long time now, and the team is finally starting to play like it has a future. The Twins begin their quest for a fifth straight series win on Monday when they host the Houston Astros, who are feeling the pressure after a tough weekend dropped them further back in the American League West race.

Minnesota let its general manager go and sold as many pieces off as it could at the trade deadline, and the players left have been busy making sure they lock down spots in the team’s future plans. Former top prospect Miguel Sano has endured an up-and-down campaign in his first full season in the majors but led the offense with a pair of home runs in Sunday’s 6-3 victory in Tampa Bay, which marked the sixth time in the last eight games that the Twins offense exploded for six or more runs. The Astros are trending in the opposite direction, both in the standings and in the batter’s box, and fell 5-3 in 11 innings at first-place Texas on Sunday to drop 7 1/2 games back in the AL West. Houston is 3-10 in its last 13 games and is averaging just 2.4 runs in that span.

TV: 8:10 p.m. ET, ROOT (Houston), FSN North (Minnesota)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Astros RH Collin McHugh (7-8, 4.73 ERA) vs. Twins RH Tyler Duffey (6-8, 6.21)

McHugh bounced back from a terrible performance in a loss at Detroit on July 29 by striking out 10 in six frames against Toronto on Wednesday. The Illinois native also surrendered three solo home runs against the Blue Jays and absorbed the loss despite allowing three or fewer earned runs for the eighth time in nine starts. McHugh has never lost to Minnesota, owning a 3-0 record with a 3.04 ERA in four career starts.

Duffey has been on the verge of losing his spot in the rotation for the last month and allowed four or more runs in each of his last four outings. The 25-year-old Texan could not make it out of the third inning in his final two starts in July but was slightly better at Cleveland on Wednesday, when he was charged with five runs on eight hits in six innings and ended up with a win. Duffey faced Houston once in his 2015 rookie campaign and allowed two runs over 6 2/3 innings without factoring in the decision.

WALK-OFFS

1. The Twins activated 3B Trevor Plouffe (fractured rib) from the 15-day disabled list and optioned CF Byron Buxton to Triple-A.

2. Houston OF Colby Rasmus, who had been mired in a 3-for-66 slump, was placed on the DL on Sunday with a right ear issue.

3. Minnesota LF Eddie Rosario is 11-for-24 during a six-game hitting streak.

Preview: Reds at Cardinals

GAME: Cincinnati Reds (45-65) at St. Louis Cardinals (58-53)
DATE/TIME: Monday, August 08 - 8:15 PM EST
WHERE: Busch Stadium, St. Louis, Missouri
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The St. Louis Cardinals are falling off the pace in the race for the second National League wild card, and poor performances against last-place teams of late are to blame. The Cardinals will enter their third straight series against a last-place club when they host the Cincinnati Reds in the opener of a three-game set on Monday.

St. Louis has dropped six of its last eight games and is coming off a series loss at home to the major league-worst Atlanta Braves over the weekend, which came on the heels of a series loss at the Reds last week. The Cardinals dropped one game behind the Miami Marlins for the No. 2 wild card with a 6-3 loss to the Braves on Sunday, and fell to 26-32 at home. Cincinnati had a string of six straight series wins come to an end while dropping two of three at Pittsburgh over the weekend but avoided a sweep with a 7-3 triumph on Sunday. The Reds are highlighting individual successes in an otherwise disappointing campaign and got three hits and four stolen bases from center fielder Billy Hamilton on Sunday.

TV: 8:15 p.m. ET, FSN Ohio (Cincinnati), FSN Midwest (St. Louis)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Reds LH Cody Reed (0-6, 7.30 ERA) vs. Cardinals RH Michael Wacha (7-7, 4.35)

Reed is still looking for his first major-league win and was ripped for five runs in as many innings in a loss to St. Louis on Wednesday. The 23-year-old allowed at least four earned runs in six of his eight starts and managed a season-low one strikeout on Wednesday. Reed is 0-3 with a 6.97 ERA in four road starts.

Wacha went up against Reed on Wednesday and earned the win while allowing two runs on six hits and a walk in five innings. That marked the 10th straight start that the Texas A&M product yielded two or three earned runs. Wacha has always been strong against Cincinnati in his career, owning a 6-1 record with a 1.97 ERA in 12 games – 11 starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. Reds 2B Brandon Phillips is 12-for-19 with eight RBIs in the last five games.

2. St. Louis INF Matt Carpenter (oblique) got Sunday off but is expected to be back in the lineup on Monday.

3. Cincinnati LF Adam Duvall is 0-for-15 in the last four games.

Preview: Rangers at Rockies

GAME: Texas Rangers (65-47) at Colorado Rockies (55-56)
DATE/TIME: Monday, August 08 - 8:40 PM EST
WHERE: Coors Field, Denver, Colorado
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

Not long ago, the Texas Rangers appeared to be on the verge of losing their lead in the American League West, while the Colorado Rockies seemed to be drifting toward yet another unsuccessful season. The Rangers attempt to continue their recent winning ways since getting off to a miserable start in the second half of the campaign when they begin a four-game, home-and-home interleague series in Colorado on Monday.

Texas (65-47) came out of the All-Star break flat, dropping seven of its first 11 contests to watch a 10-game division lead shrink to 2 1/2 before rebounding with six victories in its last nine games. The Rangers took two of three from Houston over the weekend to move seven games ahead of second-place Seattle and improve to 3-3 on their eight-game road trip. The Rockies (55-56) were eight games below .500 following the Midsummer Classic but have trimmed their deficits in the National League West (eight games, trailed by 16 at the break) and wild-card race (four, seven) significantly by winning 15 of 23. Colorado failed in its bid to make up even more ground over the weekend as it dropped two of three at home to Miami, which holds the NL's second wild-card spot.

TV: 8:40 p.m. ET, FSN Southwest (Texas), ROOT (Colorado)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Rangers LH Cole Hamels (12-3, 2.89 ERA) vs. Rockies LH Tyler Anderson (4-3, 3.25)

Hamels fell to 3-1 with a 1.59 ERA in four starts since the All-Star break following Wednesday's loss at Baltimore in which he permitted three runs on four hits and four walks over seven innings. The rough road outing was a rare one for the 2008 World Series MVP, who still holds a sparkling 8-2 record and 1.90 ERA in 12 turns away from Rangers Ballpark. Hamels split his two starts versus the Rockies last season as a member of the Philadelphia Phillies and is 4-4 lifetime with a 3.21 ERA against them.

Anderson logged his third straight quality start and sixth in his last seven trips to the mound on Wednesday, when he yielded two runs while registering six strikeouts in seven innings of a victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. The 26-year-old Las Vegas native has won each of his last four decisions after dropping the first three of his big-league career. Anderson has fared better than most hurlers at Coors Field thus far, going 4-1 with a 3.32 ERA while allowing only three home runs in seven home starts.

WALK-OFFS

1. Hamels is one of 180 opposing pitchers who have made at least five career starts at Coors Field and one of only 14 who have a sub-4.00 ERA there (3.94).

2. Colorado OF David Dahl hit in his 13th consecutive game Sunday, giving him the second-longest streak by a Rockies player to start a career (Juan Pierre, 16-game run in 2000).

3. Rangers RF Carlos Beltran (left quad contusion) was out of the starting lineup Sunday but appeared as a pinch-hitter and is considered day-to-day.

GAME: Baltimore Orioles (63-47) at Oakland Athletics (48-63)
DATE/TIME: Monday, August 08 - 10:05 PM EST
WHERE: Oakland Coliseum, Oakland, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Baltimore Orioles moved back into sole possession of first place in the American League East with a strong start to their 10-game road trip and have won five of seven. The Orioles will head further west when they visit the Oakland Athletics in the opener of a four-game series on Monday.

Manny Machado became the second player in history to homer in each of the first three innings when Baltimore dominated the rubber match with a 10-2 win at the Chicago White Sox on Sunday. Machado drove in a career-high seven runs in the win and finished up the weekend 7-for-15 with nine RBIs and five runs scored to lead the Orioles offense. The Athletics are stumbling along in last place in the AL West and totaled three runs while being swept at home in a three-game series by the Chicago Cubs over the weekend. Oakland has dropped eight of its last nine games and lost its ace on Sunday when right-hander Sonny Gray was placed on the disabled list with a forearm strain.

TV: 10:05 p.m. ET, MASN (Baltimore), CSN California (Oakland)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Kevin Gausman (3-8, 4.08 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Kendall Graveman (7-7, 4.46)

Gausman bounced back from a terrible start in a loss at Toronto on July 29 by holding Texas to two runs in seven innings while striking out seven in a win on Wednesday. The LSU product yielded one home run in that win and has had some trouble keeping the ball in the park with 20 homers allowed in 110 1/3 total innings. Gausman is still looking for his first road win of 2016 and is 0-7 with a 5.62 ERA in 11 starts away from home.

Graveman had a string of five straight quality starts come to an end when he was knocked around for six runs on nine hits – two homers – in four innings at the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday. The 25-year-old escaped without a decision in that contest but suffered the loss at Cleveland on July 29 – his first since May 19. Graveman has never had much success against the Orioles and was ripped for six runs on five hits – four home runs – in 2 2/3 innings at Baltimore on May 8.

WALK-OFFS

1. Orioles OF Steve Pearce (right elbow strain) left Sunday’s game and is day-to-day.

2. Oakland 3B Danny Valencia went 0-for-10 with three strikeouts over the weekend.

3. Baltimore LF Hyun Soo Kim scored at least one run in each of his last four starts.

GAME: Detroit Tigers (61-50) at Seattle Mariners (57-53)
DATE/TIME: Monday, August 08 - 10:10 PM EST
WHERE: Safeco Field, Seattle, Washington
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Detroit Tigers began to turn around their season when they swept a four-game set from the Seattle Mariners less than two months ago. The Tigers will try to sustain some of the momentum they've built when the postseason hopefuls renew acquaintances Monday in the first of three big games at Seattle.

In mid-June, Detroit dropped three straight in Kansas City by a combined score of 28-9 to fall below .500, but it rebounded with four wins in a row over the Mariners to begin a 27-15 surge. Included in the run are four consecutive series victories, although the Tigers were unable to complete a sweep of the New York Mets when they dropped a 3-1 decision Sunday. That left Detroit two games behind first-place Cleveland in the American League Central but put it one-half game ahead of Boston for the second wild-card spot, while Seattle sits just 3 1/2 behind the Tigers after completing a sweep of the Los Angeles Angels. Robinson Cano sat out the contest to rest and gear up for stellar Detroit rookie Michael Fulmer, who opposes Hisashi Iwakuma in the series opener.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, FSN Detroit, ROOT Sports (Seattle)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Tigers RH Michael Fulmer (9-2, 2.42 ERA) vs. Mariners RH Hisashi Iwakuma (12-7, 3.99)

Detroit has won each of the last seven games Fulmer has started, a streak that began when he allowed a run and three hits in 4 1/3 innings against Seattle on June 22. The 23-year-old has worked at least six frames in five of his six turns since then, including a solid 6 2/3 innings in a 2-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday. Fulmer is 7-2 with a 2.88 ERA in 12 starts away from home.

Iwakuma rebounded from a rocky outing at Wrigley Field two turns ago to blank Boston over 7 1/3 innings his last time out, striking out seven without issuing a walk for the fourth time in 2016. That marked his second straight scoreless turn at home, where he is 31-18 with a 3.23 ERA in his career. The 35-year-old from Japan was reached for season highs of five runs and 11 hits in 4 2/3 frames opposite Fulmer in June, and Iwakuma has been knocked around by Miguel Cabrera (4-for-10, two homers), Nick Castellanos (5-for-10, one homer) and Victor Martinez (6-for-15, two homers).

WALK-OFFS

1. Tigers 2B Ian Kinsler has recorded multiple hits in five of his last six games.

2. Cabrera went 0-for-4 on Sunday to end a six-game hitting streak that saw him go 13-for-25 with four home runs.

3. The Mariners are 15-6 when Shawn O'Malley starts at shortstop.

Preview: Phillies at Dodgers

GAME: Philadelphia Phillies (52-61) at Los Angeles Dodgers (62-49)
DATE/TIME: Monday, August 08 - 10:10 PM EST
WHERE: Dodger Stadium, Los Angeles, California
LINE: N/A TOTAL: N/A

The Philadelphia Phillies face an old friend for the first time when they begin a three-game road series against Chase Utley and the Los Angeles Dodgers on Monday. The 37-year-old Utley was the heart and soul of the Phillies for more than 12 seasons after making his major league debut in 2003, helping the franchise capture its second World Series title — and first in 28 years — in 2008 before being traded to Los Angeles on Aug. 19, 2015.

The six-time All-Star and second baseman on Sports Illustrated's All-Decade Team for the 2000s has batted .250 with seven home runs and 32 RBIs in 93 games this season for the Dodgers, who are closing in on the top spot in the National League West. Los Angeles climbed within one game of first-place San Francisco by posting its third win in four games Sunday, topping Boston 8-5 as Rob Segedin drove in four runs to set a franchise record for most RBIs in a major league debut. Philadelphia is 2-0-1 in its last three series after taking two of three from the Giants at home and San Diego on the road. The Phillies edged the Padres 6-5 on Sunday as pinch-hitter Tommy Joseph delivered a tiebreaking RBI single in the top of the seventh while the club turned the 32nd triple play in franchise history and first since Aug. 23, 2009, in the bottom of the inning.

TV: 10:10 p.m. ET, CSN Philadelphia, SportsNet LA (Los Angeles)

PITCHING MATCHUP: Phillies RH Zach Eflin (3-4, 4.77 ERA) vs. Dodgers LH Julio Urias (1-2, 4.98)

After throwing his first career shutout on July 22 at Pittsburgh, Eflin was battered in his next two outings. The 22-year-old Floridian surrendered seven runs on nine hits and four walks over five innings in a loss at Miami on July 27 and was fortunate to escape with a no-decision against San Francisco on Tuesday after yielding six runs in five frames. Eflin, who never has faced Los Angeles, is 2-2 with a 5.19 ERA in six road outings during his rookie campaign.

Urias is coming off his first relief appearance for the Dodgers, a three-inning stint at Colorado on Wednesday in which he gave up three runs and six hits. The 19-year-old Mexican has shown promise after a rough start to his major league career, allowing two runs or fewer in five straight starts from June 7-28 — although he worked more than 5 1/3 frames just once in that span. Urias, who will be facing Philadelphia for the first time, has posted a 4.15 ERA in four home starts without recording a decision.

WALK-OFFS

1. Utley has hit in the leadoff position 80 times this season after doing so on only 11 occasions with the Phillies.
