Monday’s Stanley Cup Playoffs betting preview: Capitals at Penguins

Ovechkin's detractors appear to come out en masse during the postseason due in large part because the three-time Hart Trophy winner has yet to guide the Capitals past the second round.

Washington Capitals at Pittsburgh Penguins (-125, 5.5)

Pens lead series 3-2

Alex Ovechkin's detractors appear to come out en masse during the postseason due in large part because the three-time Hart Trophy winner has yet to guide the Washington Capitals past the second round. After recording his 10th goal and 20th point in 19 contests in which the Capitals face elimination, Ovechkin looks to temporarily quiet the critics once again on Monday when his team visits the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 6 of their series.

"We're still down. We take good moments in the game (Saturday) and move forward," said Ovechkin, who capped Washington's three-goal third period in Saturday's 4-2 triumph with his eighth point (five goals, three assists) of the playoffs. While the 31-year-old Russian has been impressive versus Pittsburgh with 26 points (12 goals, 14 assists) in 18 career postseason games, the Penguins have enjoyed the last laugh by winning seven of the previous eight series - and going on to capture the Stanley Cup after the last two (2009, 2016). Pittsburgh coach Mike Sullivan isn't interested in history, whether it dates back to last season's second-round series versus Washington - the Penguins won in six games, by the way - or the events of Saturday's Game 5. "We have to have a short memory," Sullivan said. "We just have to reset our mindset and go home and try to put our very best on the ice."

TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, NBC Sports Network, CBC, TVAS

LINE HISTORY: The Penguins opened as -120 home favorites for this crucial Game 6 and that moneyline bumped up slightly on Sunday evening to -125. The total opened at 5.5.

INJURY REPORT:

Capitals - No injuries to report.

Penguins - D C. Ruhwedel (Out Indefinitely, upper body), G M. Murray (Out Indefinitely, lower body), D K. Letang (Out For Season, neck).

ABOUT THE CAPITALS (61-22-5-5, 41-37 O/U): While Ovechkin often gets the headlines, countryman Evgeny Kuznetsov continues to be one of the main stories of this series after scoring a goal in each of the past three games to tie Nicklas Backstrom and Ovechkin for the team lead with five. The affable 24-year-old Russian is often one to make outlandish statements, too, but played it close to the vest with reporters when he shared the team's mindset. "We talked about winning (Game 5) and then going to Pittsburgh and win another game," Kuznetsov said. "Now we have to focus on the second game. We can't think about Game 7. We just focus on Game 6 right now."

ABOUT THE PENGUINS (57-23-7-5, 52-35 O/U): Captain Sidney Crosby and fellow forward Conor Sheary returned on Saturday from respective one-game absences due to a concussion, with the former notching his franchise high-tying 96th assist for his 12th point (four goals, eight assists) in nine playoff contests in 2017. Crosby told reporters that his team needs to focus on puck possession as a means to overcome a huge shot discrepancy in the series (Washington leads 174-115). "I would say just a little bit more zone time," the two-time Hart Trophy finalist said. "If we can hold onto the puck a little bit more, we should get more shots. I think we'll generate a little bit more from that."

TRENDS:

* Capitals are 4-10 in their last 14 Conference Semifinals games.
* Penguins are 22-6 in their last 28 home games vs. a team with a winning road record.
* Under is 4-0 in Capitals last 4 games following a win.
* Under is 6-1-1 in Penguins last 8 home games.
* Capitals are 1-7 in the last 8 meetings in Pittsburgh.

Preview: Golden State At Utah
When: 9:00 PM ET, Monday, May 8, 2017
Where: Vivint Smart Home Arena, Salt Lake City, Utah

The Golden State Warriors are getting good news both on and off the court and can earn a four-game sweep of the Western Conference semifinals when they visit the Utah Jazz for Game 4 on Monday. Warriors coach Steve Kerr, who has been out since the first round while dealing with complications from back surgery, reportedly underwent a procedure to address a spinal cord leak and could resume his coaching career as early as later this postseason.

Kerr did not travel with the team to Utah and is not expected back soon, but owner Joe Lacob gave a radio interview over the weekend and suggested that he may be getting closer to rejoining a Golden State squad that is 7-0 in the playoffs and on the verge of a second consecutive sweep after coming alive in the fourth quarter of a 102-91 triumph in Saturday's Game 3. "Hopefully the leak was solved; he had another procedure. It's gone on for nearly two years. Very unusual, I believe," Lacob said to Bloomberg Radio. "We feel really bad for him, the players. Everybody understands it. We just have to be in his court here and support whatever it takes for him to get back, and I'm sure they will eventually solve it. Hopefully sooner rather than later, and hopefully we'll have him coaching on the court sooner rather than later." The Jazz led by as much as nine points in the third quarter on Saturday and held Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson to a combined 7-of-29 from the floor but still lost. "We played like we're capable of playing for the first time in the series," Utah coach Quin Snyder told reporters. "But … that's why they are who they are."

TV: 9 p.m. ET, TNT

ABOUT THE WARRIORS: With Curry and Thompson suffering through poor shooting nights in Game 3, Golden State let Kevin Durant take the lead and watched the former MVP collect 38 points on 15-of-26 shooting and 13 rebounds. "I want to try to say this as humbly as I can," Durant told reporters in the postgame press conference. "But I’ve been doing this for so long, and every time I roll out of the bed and we have a game that day, I feel like I can go out there and score." Forward Draymond Green heard loud boos from the crowd most of the game and had a little fun with the opposing fans early, holding up two fingers to represent the Warriors being up 2-0 in the series.

ABOUT THE JAZZ: All-Star small forward Gordon Hayward had another strong game on Saturday with 29 points and six assists but Utah struggled to 39 percent shooting from the field. "I don't think we shot the ball as well as we wanted," Hayward told reporters. "There were times where we got some bad shots. I think that's going to happen because they're a good defensive team. But the ones we did get, that were open, it seemed like we didn't knock them down like we normally do." Utah has been without second-leading scorer George Hill (toe) the last two games and he remains questionable for Game 4.

BUZZER BEATERS

1. The Jazz are attempting to become the first NBA team to ever recover from a 3-0 deficit in a best-of-seven to win the series.

2. Green was hit with his first technical foul of the postseason when he was assessed the infraction while sitting on the bench and yelling out toward referees in Game 3.

3. Golden State committed just seven turnovers on Saturday - none in the second half.

PREDICTION: Warriors 112, Jazz 102

Washington vs. Baltimore
Play: Baltimore +102

The Orioles have won 15 of 21 at night and 12 of 15 if the total is 8 to 8.5. Home teams off a home favored win that scored 4 or less runs on 10+ hits are cashing 88% long term vs an opponent off a road favored loss like the Nationals. Gonzalez goes for Washington and he is 1-5 vs Baltimore. Gausman for The Orioles was solid last year going 6 scoreless vs Washington. Look for Baltimore to take this one.

Giants vs. Mets
Pick: Mets

Sunday was a day to forget in Queens as the Metropolitans suspended Matt Harvey (violation of team rules) not long before he was due to start against Miami. The result was an ugly 7-0 loss. But, let us not forget that the Mets had taken the first two games of that series. Despite several injuries, the offense had been performing at an exceptional level as well. Here, they draw a Giants team that over its last 100 games has shockingly been the WORST in ALL of MLB! With tonight's pitching matchup decidedly in their favor, the Mets are a strong recommendation here.

Jacob deGrom will be the one getting the baseball here for the home team. While deGrom did give up five runs in his last start, it hardly mattered as the Mets supplied him w/ a ton of support in a 16-5 win over the Braves. Also, let's look at deGrom's three previous starts, shall we? He registered double digit strikeouts in all three and 35 total in 19 2/3 innings! That's impressive stuff. Given the Giants were shutout yesterday and outscored 31-5 in a three-game sweep by the Reds, I can't state enough what a favorable spot this appears to be for deGrom and the Mets.

The Giants are really bad. Going into the All-Star Break last year, they actually had the best record in baseball at 57-33. Since that time, they've posted the WORST record in all of baseball at 41-63 L104 regular season games. As I just stated, they were outscored 31-5 by the Reds over the weekend. Not only were they shutout Sunday, but in four of the seven games previous, the pitching staff had allowed 12 runs or more. One of those was in a start made by Matt Moore, who will go again Monday. Last Tuesday, Moore allowed nine runs in just 3 1/3 innings at Dodger Stadium. He's now allowed 5+ ER in three of his last four starts.

Washington vs. Pittsburgh
Pick: Washington

The set-up: The Caps began the third period of Saturday's Game 5 down 2-1 and 20 minutes away from losing yet another postseason series. However, Washington scored three goals less than eight minutes in, capped by Alex Ovechkin's fifth goal of this year's playoffs (he has three assists for eight points). "We're still down. We take good moments in the game (Saturday) and move forward," Ovechkin told reporters. Pittsburgh captain Sidney Crosby and fellow forward Conor Sheary returned on Saturday from one-game absences due to concussions, with Crosby notching his franchise high-tying 96th playoff assist for his 12th point (four goals, eight assists) in nine contests this postseason.

Washington: Ovechkin has been impressive versus Pittsburgh with 26 points (12 goals, 14 assists) in 18 career postseason games. However, the Penguins have enjoyed the last laugh by winning seven of the previous eight series and going on to capture the Stanley Cup after the last two (2009, 2016). While Ovechkin often gets the headlines, countryman Evgeny Kuznetsov continues to be one of the main stories of this series after scoring a goal in each of the last three games to tie Nicklas Backstrom and Ovechkin for the team lead with five. Goaltender Hotlby held Pittsburgh at bay in the third period and since getting pulled in Game 2 (a 6-2 Pittsburgh win), has stopped 63 of 70 shots (.900 SP), which includes that "own goal" in Game 4.

Pittsburgh: Crosby told reporters that his team needs to focus on puck possession as a means to overcome a huge shot discrepancy in the series (Washington leads 174-115). "I would say just a little bit more zone time," the two-time Hart Trophy winner - and 2017 finalist - told reporters. "If we can hold on to the puck a little bit more, we should get more shots. I think we'll generate a little bit more from that." The Penguins may have won seven of the previous eight series against the Capitals but Pittsburgh head coach Mike Sullivan isn't interested in history, whether it dates back to last season's second-round series versus Washington or the events of Game 5. "We have to have a short memory," Sullivan told reporters. "We just have to reset our mindset and go home and try to put our very best on the ice."

The pick: Yes, the Capitals lost Game 6 in Pittsburgh last year 4-3 in overtime but the Capitals had won Game 6 in four off the previous series in which they had trailed 3-2. I expect them to win here and extend the series to a Game 7 in Washington?

Chicago at Colorado
Pick: Colorado

This line is based purely on reputation and not current reality which suggests the Cubs bear little resemblance to their World Series team of last season and that the Rocks are much improved. The comparisons filter down to the starting pitchers, as Chicago's Jake Arrieta is way off his 2015 Cy Young form while young Antonio Sentezela continues to impress for the Rocks, with his 2.84 ERA. Note that Arrieta does not have much of a track record at Coors Field and was shelled in his lone start in Denver sicne 2014, allowing 9 runs and 13 hits in just 5 IP in his only start.

Los Angeles @ Oakland
Pick: Oakland -103

It has been a rough start for both Oakland and the Los Angeles Angels as they open their series with both teams below .500. Ironically, Kendall Graveman and Ricky Nolasco will face each other for the third time this season already, and we are just in early May. Oakland, after a poor stretch, has gotten things turned around winning three of their last four games. The Angels have been going in the wrong direction at 1-4 over their last five with an over-taxed bullpen and a staff allowing over six runs a game in the stretch. The Angels have been woeful vs. right handed starters on the road where they are 18-37 in their last 55 against them. The A's are now 8-2 in Graveman's last 10 starts on a regular four days of rest and have cashed opportunities at home vs. losing teams, now 5-1 in their last six.

Washington vs. Baltimore
Pick: Baltimore

Washington will be in Baltimore tonight, as the Nationals and Orioles open a four-game home-and-home set in the latest edition of the Beltway Series. It's been a one-sided rivalry lately, as the Nationals have not won a season series over the Orioles since going 4-2 in 2007. However, Baltimore gets set to host a Washington team which is 21-10, giving them the NL's best record. The Orioles are 20-10, just a half-game back of the 20-9 Yankees, who own MLB's best winning percentage.

The Nats saw their four-game winning streak snapped on Sunday, when the bullpen coughed up a lead and Washington went on to fall 6-5 in 10 innings at Philadelphia. The Orioles are off a three-game home sweep of the White Sox and take a four-game winning streak into tonight's contest. Gio Gonzalez (3-0, 1.64 ERA) will take the mound for the Nats, opposed by the Orioles' Kevin Gausman (1-3, 7.55 ERA). Clearly, Gonzalez is having the better season so far, as he has yet to allow more than two ERs in his six 2017 starts (team is 5-1). However, he's just 1-5 in nine career starts vs Baltimore (team is 3-6), despite a 3.88 ERA that's hardly an embarrassment.

Gausman appeared to be the victim of an overreaction by the umpiring crew on Wednesday, when he was tossed after hitting Boston's Xander Bogaerts with a curveball during that tense series. He will be trying to get back on track after getting lit up for 18 runs in 14 innings (11.57 ERA) while surrendering six home runs in his previous three starts (he's 0-2 and the team 0-3). However, in a modest three career starts against Washington, Gausman may be 2-1 but he owns a 5.63 ERA!

Current form says Gonzalez and the Nats but history says Gausman and the Orioles. I'll go with history in this one.

Padres -125

Texas doesn't have a bullpen. Martinez isn't very good. Texas played, lost, and flew from Seattle. Texas isn't hitting. San Diego had yesterday off. I'll take my chances with Cahill at home, where he's been solid.

Rangers at Padres
Play: Under 7.5

Texas has not been productive away from hitter-friendly Globe Life Park in Arlington. Not only have they struggled to win on the road in April and early May the offense is striking out at an alarming rate. The Rangers were able to avoid a major-league record on Sunday afternoon. Texas entered Sunday's American League West event against Seattle having struck out at least 10 times in seven straight games - an AL record - and while it was able to avoid matching the major-league mark by swinging and missing on third strikes only six times, the Rangers bullpen allowed four late runs losing by a 4-3 margin to the Mariners making the club 5-11 overall on the road this season.

With the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego game postponed on Sunday the Padres rotation were all moved forward a day meaning that the burley Trevor Cahill will start against Nick Martinez and the Texas Rangers tonight.

Cahill has been masterful at Safeco Field this season. The right-hander has an 0.69 ERA at Petco compared to 5.82 on the road. Cahill has added a cutter to his arsenal this season and increased his strikeout ratio. Cahill has a 11.10 K/9 this season along with a 13.2 SwStr%, both easily career highs. And Cahill squares off against a Rangers lineup that have the 6th highest strike out percentage in baseball.

Right-hander Nick Martinez has the advantage the first two or three times through the Padres lineup tonight. None of the current San Diego player personnel has faced Martinez live and the Texas right-hander has been solid in his six career interleague events, five of those being starts, recording a 2-0 record.

The cool air in San Diego on Monday night along with a stiff breeze blowing in from right field give both starters the chance to go deep into tonight's event. Expect a pitchers dual in this West Coast interleague event.

Yankees at Reds
Play: Under 8.5

The Reds and the Yanks play the first of their two-game interleague series. The Reds have won five straight contests and seven of eight after sweeping a three-game set from San Francisco over the weekend while the first place Yankees are off a sweep of the reigning World Series champs, the Cubs, at Wrigley Field.

The Yankees' player personnel should be lethargic to some degree tonight. The Bronx Bombers are coming off a nearly six-hour, extra innings contest last night, the ESPN Sunday Night Baseball event that lasted until the wee hours of the morning, two games in truth, as New York found a way to earn a 5-4 victory over 18 innings.

The Yanks send Masahiro Tanaka to the hill to square off against a upstart Reds lineup. Tanaka is coming off a complete game shutout over the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park, a game that allowed him to improve on a slow start and lower his ERA to 4.20. There is little to no difference in what Tanaka has done this year compared to last season with the exception of walks. The New York right-hander currently holds a BB/9 at 3.00 while his career average is 1.63.

This is an important night for Cincinnati starting pitcher Rookie Davis. It is a start that the 24-year old has been looking forward to once it was declared he would get the turn against his former team. Davis, formerly a part of the New York Yankees family, was traded away before the 2016 season as part of the Aroldis Chapman deal. Davis is not only friends with many of the current Yankees personnel he was their teammates in New York farm system. However, of the Yankees players that Davis still communicates with, only Aaron Judge is healthy at the moment.

This isn't a matchup where Davis will be nervous. On the contrary, it is a group is he comfortable with and a matchup that Davis knew was coming, ever since the entire rotation was given an extra day of rest in the wake of Saturday’s rainout in St. Louis. The Reds young right-hander will face a tired group of New York bats tonight and is set up to succeed. Davis enters this Interleague affair off of his first major-league victory, and one that was uber impressive, when he held Pittsburgh to four hits and three walks over five scoreless innings.

Davis struggled in early April. The rookie was only able to pitch into the fifth inning in one of his first three turns but everything sets up tonight for a low scoring game where even the umpires are sympathetic to the Yankees late plane trip and lack of sleep for this Monday night contest.
