Through Saturday, there have been 14 bowl games played, and the Under stands at 9-5.

The Over has been picking up some steam though, as 3 straight and 4 of the last 5 have played Over.

Add this morning's Miami (Ohio)-Miss State game to the Over column, as I have a feeling the Bulldogs out of the SEC will be able to wrack up the bulk of the points needed for this game to land Over the total.

Miss State played their final 6 games of the year Over the total, while Miami-Ohio ended with 3 of their last 5 games having played Over the total.

The SEC Bulldogs played a brutally tough schedule this season, so I am sure they are looking forward to a step down in competition in this one against the MAC rep Red Hawks. Look for Miss State to crank up the offense, and for Miami-Ohio to get some "prevent" points late to help push this year's St. Petersburg Bowl Over the total.

Thanks to the Giants Thursday loss at Philadelphia, Dallas has clinched the #1 seed in the NFC. So with a little less "urgency" expected from the Cowboys, I will grab the points with the "urgent" Lions who have not yet secured a spot in the playoff party.

The Lions have played them close pretty much all season, and they have covered 5 of their 8 tries this year when listed as the underdog.

As for the Cowboys, cannot argue their 12-2 straight up ledger, but it has been a different tale of late against the line, as Dallas has now failed 4 straight times - all of them listed as the favorite.

Since Dallas is sitting pretty at # 1, will go against the Cowboys as the home favorite.

Take Detroit plus the points.

Bonus Play Monday

Merry Christmas to all, and here’s my Monday Bonus Play (analysis will return on Tuesday).

QUICK LANE BOWL

231 MARYLAND vs. 232 BOSTON COLLEGE 2:30 PM

TAKE: BOSTON COLLEGE +2

Note this is NOT on my personal service card. Not many choices today due to the thin slate and most of the NBA games are not available at this time.

However, the Lions +7.5 play posted as the Bonus Play a couple of days ago is on the card. Note that I’m also intending to buy back a portion of that wager with Cowboys at -6.5 or better.

As for Maryland-BC, little to choose from in a game between two very average teams. I generally tend to side with the better defense, particularly vs. the run, in these “minor” bowl games. So with the Eagles owning a commanding edge in that category, I lean to that side and getting a couple of points can’t hurt.

Miami (OH) vs Mississippi State

Bonus Play from Doc’s Sports. #230 Take Mississippi State Bulldogs over Miami (OH) RedHawks (St. Petersburg Bowl, Monday 11 am ESPN)

The Bulldogs were the only 5-7 team to make a bowl game this season and expect them to take out the RedHawks in blowout fashion. Teams that made bowl games last year at 5-7 did extremely well last year in bowl games and we expect that trend to continue this year. Miami (OH) also had a strange year losing six straight games before winning six straight games to close out the regular season. Mississippi State has better talent in all three phases and their up-tempo offense will cause Miami fits all game long. Mississippi State is 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games played in the month of December.
