So many of these guys would not even be allowed to visit a college campus without their athletic ability. It is worse in football than basketball. In basketball, it is obvious. They don't go to 2nd semester classes yet "hey let's pay them"

First, in John Wooden's day, the NCAA tournament seeding was regional. Meaning, UCLA would play in the West and only have to win 2 games (against Portland and UC Berkley) to get to the Final Four.
More importantly, let's take a look at last night's game. With his 2 best players in foul trouble with 13 minutes left and Wisky's lead going to 9, he didn't panic. Coach K stuck to the game plan and left those players on the bench. Conversely, down 6 with :43 left what does Bo Ryan do? Foul. Total panic move.

"We have one of the great schools in the world, and when we recruit a young man, we recruit a young man because of three things: One, he has the academic potential to do well at Duke; two, he has the talent to do well; and three, he has great character. Yeah, like he genuinely believes all those players are going to stay four years. If you want one-and-dones fine. It's what you have to do to be in the national championship race every year. But don't act like you are mightier than anyone else that does it. Wisconsin could have done it had Diamond Stone earned more than a 14 on his ACT. Maryland chose to allow him to play one year. Go for it.
