Mark Richt fired at Georgia

Curious about a couple things:

Georgia is a top 10 job AT WORST. Main program in a very populous and talent rich state. SEC East is down. Georgia has a bug athletic budget, etc....

Why is Kirby Smart the main choice (other than him having ties to the program)? He doesn't seem like a very sexy hire and seemed like a bigger name 4-5 years ago whereas you rarely hear his name the last couple years in coaching searches.

By no means am I saying that would be a poor hire, I just expected Georgia to swing for the fences a little more as I imagine coaches would stand in line for that interview.

As the defensive coordinator for Saban, is there not at least some concern that Saban is still the one pulling those strings and responsible for those defenses?

He has been the right hand man behind the best coach in the game the past 10 years.

Also if you follow recruiting, he is the best in the country. If him and Pruitt stay together that D would be nfl caliber. I'm hearing Helton from WKY as OC.

Herman would be a slam dunk....but i worry he will bolt to Austin once Strong is canned.

Isn't that the only hiccup right now is that Kirby wants Pruitt, and the AD doesn't? It didn't help Mark for sticking up for Pruitt. Will the AD lose his job and hire Dan Mullen? That's who he seems to want, but not likely...IDK, I just know I don't want a leftover Richt, and definitely not a sorry Muschamp at SC. I'll take Larry Fedora over these two, anyday...Maybe they don't let Kirby have Pruitt and that's the straw that breaks the camels back...Nah, nothing more money can't fix...

And wtf has SC AD Ray tanner been doing for the last two months?!? End up losing his job too if he isn't careful. Fine by me. It's like Gregg Marshall all over again...Scared to pony up and get who you want and settle for mediocrity. Great, just great...

McGarity is a POS. Dawgnation hates him. He is a snake. He wants to bring his ole pal from UF, Mullen to UGA. That will not fly with the fans in Athens. Pruitt is a bad ass. He and Smart will lock down some nasty recruiting classes.

Speculation that Richt may become new AD in Athens.

All this makes sense, and hope it happens, unless that means SC gets stuck with Muschamp bc it's baffling to me why he's even considered.

Agree with both of you on two points:

Georgia should NOT hire Mullen. I would much rather have Kirby Smart than Mullen.

And South Carolina should NOT hire Muschamp (I can't even see how that would enter your AD's mind). Starting to wonder just who they end up with. They should have had an advantage knowing Spurrier was out over a month ago but didn't take advantage of that evidently.

McGarity ain't going anywhere. Additionally, he's a homegrown kid from Athens. He's done a great job there....and he had the balls to can Richt, which outside of the UGA faithful, has not been received very well nationally. The expression, be careful what you wish for comes to mind here.

At the end of the day I still think it's Smart's job.

He sucks and the fan base hates him. He fked over Bobo and CMR last year. CMR went and ask for a raise for Bobo, he said no. Then he paid Shitty-Schotty over a mil. He is a snake.....ask any UGA fan. Below is what he has done:

5 1/2 years before McGarity

20 SEC Championships
10 National Titles

5 1/2 years since McGarity

4 SEC Championships
3 National Titles

My point exactly. Ray Tanner is a nice guy, but they were being generous to give him the AD job to start with imo. Sure, he won B2B baseball NC, but he doesn't know jack about business, and this football hire may, and should, cost him his own...

CMR would be a great coach HC/OC for UVA.

Richt said today at his press conference that he wanted to coach again. I agree, Virginia
and Miami or maybe even Maryland. One of my old buddies said don't be surprised if South
Carolina doesn't show some interest.

I don't think he wants the stress of an SEC school......UVA would be a perfect fit for him. Great town with ability to attract some decent QBs....wants to coach QBs and call plays again. Don't think he would take a OC job tho......it would have to be HC/OC.

He is a Damn Good Dawg

Yes, UVA would be perfect.

DJ Durkin looks to be the next Maryland coach.

Heard this morning the CMR press conference. I think he still wants to coach and if I were UVA, I would have called him yesterday and there would have been a plane waiting for him today. Better yet, if I'm Craig Littlepage, I'd fly to Athens to speak directly with him and his wife. I think he'd be a great fit there. High academic university, would be very similar to when George Welsh was the HC for UVa.

His presser was a thing of beauty. Can't help to like the man. He just got stale in Athens. Like we say around these parts......he was a Damn Good Dawg.

maybe a return to Athens to be AD in the future would be great.

How would fans in Athens react if he took a job at UVa, or Mizzou, or So Carolina? Sounded like the UGa wanted him to hang around in some capacity but his juices are still flowing to coach and mentor young men. I didn't mention Maryland but I know former UGa AD Damon Evans is the #2 guy up there if memory serves me correct. Not sure what their relationship was like although I know Evans ran into some personal issues

Mark Richt should not be feeling too down and out because he is getting a lot of attention from several schools. It's being reported several schools have contacted Richt with Maryland pushing the hardest. Richt is probably going to meet with Terp officials either today or tomorrow. There is a connection there that favors a possible marriage. Former Georgia AD Damon Evans (2004-2010) is an associated AD at the school.
