Anyone who thinks Prince shouldn't be in the top ten should check him out at the 3:40 mark during this trubute to George Harrison with Tom Petty, Stevie Winwood and co at The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He blows the old dudes right off the stage with his rendition of "My Guitar Gently Weeps".

My addition to a list: This guy is insane... If you prefer more "structured" songs, check out one called Machete, I don't think he plays it live, but it's on youTube I'm sure.

Pat Metheny

How can you not love this? So tasteful... Stick around for
the second solo in the song.

Danny Gatton was the only guitar player that I've ever seen who has played, mastered and recorded in every genre of music. I don't think any other guitar player else can claim this feat. He's known basically as a rock and roll and blues guitarist. But he's even recorded a jazz album with Roy Hargrove and Joshua Redman called the New York Stories. I would stack him up against anybody. He was once called by Guitar Player and Rolling Stone magazines the World's Greatest greatest unknown guitar player. When he gets going on the guitar he could put every heavy metal guitarist to shame with his speed of playing. They didn't call him "fingers of fire" for nothing. It was a tragedy that he suffered from depression and commited suicide in 1995.Seems all the good ones died young. Here's a solo from Sleepwalk. He really gets it going towards the end.

Any top ten guitar players list need to include Chet Atkins.

Can't believe some of the guys that make people's lists.

Or, an MIT grad and inventor of the Rockman Amplifier, Tom Scholz?
