Believe that Rachel Alexandra is done and off to the breeding barn.

What an idiotic statement.. So according to you Jess Jackson spent all those millions for the young 3 yr old filly, so she could run just one race and then retire her???? OMG that is the most asinine comment I've ever read about horse racing on here, you are suppose to know this sport...

Doing what you said would be like throwing millions of dollars purse money away.. Its not like she is some 5 yr old who's career is ending soon, she is a young 3 yr old with a future and plenty of Grade 1 races to compete and win..

If Rachel Alexandra doesn't run, will Calvin Borel be offered a horse for the Belmont?

I assume he'd be the first jockey to win every major race on three different horses. The human Triple Crown.

He is going to ride Mine That Bird in the Belmont, he is going to try to win the Triple Crown on different horses.. What a storyline, huh?

Well that sounds a little more realisitic then Oldman Teds asinine comment but consider who purchased the horse, Jess Jackson..

He let Curlin run a long 4 yr old campaign. Unless she has an injury or is fragile, she should have a 4 yr old campaign..

Too much money to lose, not running her.. Its not like they're planning to sell her, she is going to have Curlin's dick inside her and they are going to have to wait years til the baby runs and there is no guarantee the baby will be great either..

If she does run, she is toast. She was able to win yesterday off a regression, but not much of a margin and Borel was complaining that she "did not handle the track". What he doesn't realize is, she is in need of freshening and if they try to run her back in the Belmont she will fail miserably ala Big Brown, and what Borel perceived as her slight struggles are just a foreshadowing of a big bounce should she race back without some significant rest.

Sunday 5/17/09 found on Brisnet

RACHEL ALEXANDRA (Medaglia d'Oro), whose courage on Saturday produced a one-length victory over Mine That Bird in the Preakness S. (G1), is under consideration but is presently not a confirmed starter in the Belmont Stakes.

Interesting observation in the Preakness Stakes.... Mind that Bird with Mike Smith was charging down the center of the Pimlico track passing horses with every stride. BUT.... could not get by the filly RA, ..(ran out of track) after the finish line Mind That Bird STILL could not gallop past the Filly R A. With that big of a move, he should of galloped on pass the filly after the finish line.

Was Mind That Bird getting tired after two hard charging finishes ?

Is he the next canidate for a bounce ?

If Mind that Bird does race in the Belmont Stakes as his trainer stated, Who will be the jockey ? Smith or Borel or someone else ?

Interesting

Well he has had a pretty wicked last two weeks, so of course he was tired but still ran great. I think RA was more tired though, she had to work hard early in the race and she is probably more fragile...

Is he the next canidate for a bounce ?

Thats the great thing about the triple crown, these young horses are being asked to run 3 long distance races in a little over a months time.. Light training and the three weeks in between races should leave enough in the tank for a good effort, at least I would think.. But again thats the great thing about this..

I would venture to say "Borel", although Mine that Bird's connections just might be bitter enough to completely take him off the horse forever..

Mine that Bird is a gelding and if he avoids injury will be racing for many years to come.. And thats a lot of fucking money. Borel's jockey agent should be kissing some ass.

haha, to Good Luck to who?

Enough with the language, this forum is probably one of the most civil of all of our fourms. If you disagree with someone fine but next time I see you calling posters or mods assinine or idiotic because they make a simple statement about a horse it will be your last in this forum. Please remember you are being given this warning in good faith.

FWIW - I doubt RA will run more than two more races tops (and maybe none) before she is retired and starts having multi-million dollar foals. The insurance premiums alone when she races are enough to hasten her retirement. Curlin paid $3,000,000 a year in insurance premiums as a 4 year old making it nearly impossible to earn a substantial profit despite winning The 2008 Dubai Cup with a purse of $6,000,000 and $3.6M to the winner.

Right now this animal can only lesson her value as a stud mare by losing a race such as The Belmont in three weeks, or races such as The BC $2,000,000 Fillies and Mares Turf Classic or The $2,000,000 BC Ladies Classic (both against older fillies) or even the $5,000,000 BC Classic (against the best mature horses in the world)

Enough BC speculation as it is months away still.

RA is due to workout at Churchill on May 25th. A workout that should go a long way towards convincing trainer Steve Asmussen and principle owner Jess Jackson whether or not to enter the filly in the Belmont last won by a filly just two years ago in 2007 with Rags to Riches and jockey John Velazquez by a head on the last jump over a game Asmussen trained Curlin after a thrilling stretch run..

Waiting for her in a short field will be Mine That Bird who was sired by Birdstone, who upset Smarty Jones with a blazing stretch run to win the 2004 Belmont. Based on the gelding’s pedigree, the added distance should not be a problem.

Among the trainers who started Preakness also-rans, few wanted another run against Rachel Alexandra or Mine That Bird. Only D. Wayne Lukas expressed interest in the Belmont, with Flying Private, who was fourth in the Preakness.

There will be several new faces in the Belmont though, including Charitable Man, among the best 2-year-olds in the country last year. He was held out of the Derby after a poor effort in the Blue Grass Stakes over a synthetic surface, but he rebounded with a win in the Peter Pan Stakes at Belmont, a track he obviously likes.

Another candidate is Dunkirk, the Florida Derby runner-up, who had a horrible trip in the Derby on his way to an 11th-place finish, but whose owners and trainer see the Belmont as a more suitable test with a small field chances of a bad trip lessen.

BTW..2007 was it for Rags to Riches who ran her last race in the $250,000 Gazelle Stakes at Belmont Park on September 15th 2007 but finished second to Lear's Princess. The filly resumed training at age 4. Then on March 24, 2008, trainer Todd Pletcher announced that Rags to Riches had re-injured her right front pastern and was retiring. Rags gave birth to her first foal a filly by Giant's Causeway on March 9, 2009. Both are doing well.

Anyway gynecologist , there is no reason to insult anyone on this forum regarding their opinion. This forum is here for civil and courteous discussion about horse racing. Talk horses all you want but show a little civility please.

Your cooperation will be very much appreciated.

Thank you, wilheim

From DRF:

Rematch in Belmont not a certainty

Reed Palmer Photography/Churchill Downs
Rachel Alexandra
By Jay Privman

Rachel Alexandra and Mine That Bird, the first two finishers in a thrilling, historic Preakness Stakes on Saturday here at Pimlico, are both headed back to Churchill Downs. Only Mine That Bird is definite for the Belmont Stakes; Steve Asmussen, who trains Rachel Alexandra, said he didn't "feel the urgency" to run the filly in the Belmont like he did for the Preakness.

As for Mine That Bird, "I think (a second duel with Rachel Alexandra) would be a great thing for racing," trainer Bernie (Chip) Woolley said. "It was a great race (Saturday). People really loved the race. It'd be a great matchup.

"We'll see how he is over the next couple of days, if he settles out of the race.. He kind of gets a little wound up after he runs and if he settles out and he's healthy and sound, that's what I need to see. As long as he looks that way, our plan is to head to Belmont."

One thing for sure, Mike Smith will be aboard the Derby-winning gelding if he wants the mount.

"Mike Smith will ride the horse regardless," Woolley said. "He rode a great race (Saturday). It wasn't his fault (Mine That Bird) got beat.We just got outrun. Mike will ride the horse back in the Belmont Stakes, if he'll take the call."

In the Kentucky Derby, Smith rode Chocolate Candy to a fifth-place finish, and the colt is expected to run in the Belmont Stakes.

... i think Rachel will run 3 more times this year...belmont, then some race in late August and then the breeders cup....I think these new owners are nutz..but want to show her off for the sport....they need the sport to thrive to continue doing what they are doing and a superstar helps a ton...

I agree. Three or four more races max., then she retires at the end of the year.

I just think there is too much to lose by running Rachel Alexandra in the Belmont. She already proved she can beat the boys. To me , the only thing left for her to prove is to take on Zenyatta and the older mares.

The race in late August should be the 600K Alabama at Saratoga. The 1 1/4 mi. should be no problem for her against 3yo fillies. Then a prep for the BC Distaff, maybe the Spinster at Keeneland to get another race on synthetic. If she were to beat Zenyatta, she could win horse of the year.

As for Mine That Bird, it's the Belmont for sure. Then, I think it will be the Haskell at Monmouth, the Travers at Saratoga, then one prep before the BC Classic.
