Views only change once an hour (I have posted this several times over the last 3 years). At 5 minutes before the top of the hour the views that a particucular thread received in the last hour. Right now at 5:52 EDT this thread has 2082 views. Refresh at 5:56 PM EDT and you will se how many views this thread has received in the last hour. The same is true to every thread that had even one view in the last hour.

I think you are looking at this as a DOS Attack. It's a DDOS Attack.

It is important to note the difference between a DDoS and DoS attack.
If an attacker mounts a smurf attack from a single host it would be classified as a DoS attack. In fact, any attack against availability would be classed as a Denial of Service attack.

But On the other hand, if an attacker uses a thousand zombie systems to simultaneously launch smurf attacks against a remote host, this would be classified as a DDoS attack.

What you state above would not help Stop these attacks, it would be like Feeding the birds in a park. I'm sure you get the idea...

I don't know if you saw that 80 view increase at 5:56PM EDT but now this thread has 2162 views just in what appears to be a few minutes later but in reality the increase was the amount of views this thread received in the last hour.

The service play thread went from 30,900 to 32,138 views in the same hour.

PS. Now except for brand new threads (only during the first 5 minutes of) you will not see any threads increase it's view total until 6:56PM EDT.

I just play around with this IT stuff.. But bdizzle, Wolfie CR, and a few others on here are the REAL DEAL.

I just know that most people call all attacks, dos. When in fact it's a ddos

Finally, now that you see this thread is stuck with the number 2162 views, you can view it in and out all you want as can I and that number will not change until 6:56PM EDT. when it will reflect the total views for the entire hour.

That is what happened to your RR thread, it is a thread that is a few days old so most likely it's views were somewhere in the high 900s when you noticed it break 1,000 earlier today.

hey Wil...understand what you are saying....said thread is not even 24 hours old and the most people even being in RR since last night has been 40 people at one time...i think those 40 must have been trying to memorize article...

no problem here,i was just pointing out that relying on thread views to point out that people are having no problem accessing site,whether to read or post in my opinion is wrong...i have had nothing but trouble all afternoon...last 15 minutes have been great though...

not saying anything bad about this fine site,as if i felt that way i would simply go somewhere else...

Another method is to check the little envelope at the left of each thread.

The envelope turns red if the thread is accumulating views thus becoming a hot thread.
