The Rx is well aware of the upgrade but right now it is not a priority. We finally added PMs recently but these DDOS have the IT guys occupied. The Rx.com actually is a waste of time to attack if you are looking for a ransom, the motive is more along the lines of vindictivness.

wil..

Roger that Wil, thanks for the clarification.

As far as 3.7, I definitely can't wait til we have it here at therx. :)

But as you stated, it would be stupid right now to upgrade with the current circumstances.

Hey, BTW... Congrats on closest to the Pin on Hole #17 at VDS the other day!! :103631605

Ask Judge about the time I got 3 inches from a hole in one at that hole. I think you were there actually, but I can't remember.

Can I get a freaking answer as to why this site is performing less than poorly for one solid week, without double talk or sugar coating please.

I am 90% certain I know the problem, I would like it confirmed.

The site is being hit with a complex and sophisticated Distributed Denial of Service(DDOS) attack.

If you don't want to believe that story, I don't know what to tell you.

That was/is my only theory.
Thank you.

It would be best recommended that you try to communicate with your webhosting admin, to change your ip of the website, if you are hosting your own server on your own pc, try release your ip(dynamic only) by off and on your modem router, for fix ip, you have to contact your ISP to resolve the IP address.

DDOS is also known to attack the same ip, but with diferrent IP, you will not be affected by it.

Also, look into prolexc technologies.

Bill that is ridiculous. Why would they use a dynamic IP? :icon_conf And as far as Prolexic, do a little research on them. If the accusations hold true, that would be like putting on a meat suit and swimming in a shark tank.

The RX needs multiple servers, and a slave and master DB (that is config in the config.php fil of VBulletin). Then they need to work on configuring how many simultaneous connections can be used from one source visiting the web site. There are multiple ways to approach this problem, it just takes a little bit of money and a little bit of time.

Might be best to get a few Apple X-Serves since they run on BSD and host within your own facility in the future as well. :103631605

Regardless of which approach might be better, is the RX even LISTENING to such suggestions like billhill and bdizzle are trying to make?

Time to think outside of the box maybe?

I think you are looking at this as a DOS Attack. It's a DDOS Attack.

It is important to note the difference between a DDoS and DoS attack.
If an attacker mounts a smurf attack from a single host it would be classified as a DoS attack. In fact, any attack against availability would be classed as a Denial of Service attack.

But On the other hand, if an attacker uses a thousand zombie systems to simultaneously launch smurf attacks against a remote host, this would be classified as a DDoS attack.

What you state above would not help Stop these attacks, it would be like Feeding the birds in a park. I'm sure you get the idea...

More sophisticated than just a smurf attack. Over the years, newer techniques involved combining old techniques simultaneously.

For The Record

We do appreciate all the advice you posters have offered, some of which we have implemented but our Tech People and Management both do not feel that discussing our exact strategy freely online to be in our best interests.

All I can do is ask for your patience, despite the attacks we have remained up for the most part all day today which in itself (compared to last Saturday especially, when we we totally down the entire day) indicates that we are making substantial progress.

Anyone interested in what we are dealing with should read the section about DDOS explained in this link to Wikipedia's article on DOS short for denial of service attacks.

Thank you, wil..

PS. For example our Service Play thread today September 13th has nearly 31,000 views and still increasing, prooving both posters and lurkers have had access to the site today.
