Here's a good link that discusses, as it stands, the 23 players to be taken...it's in Italian, but still easy to decipher if you can't read it. It's about a month old though....

http://www.gazzetta.it/Calcio/Nazionale/Primo_Piano/2006/01_Gennaio/02/mondiali.shtml (not sure if links are frowned up here, sorry if so)

The article lists the attackers as Totti, Del Piero, Toni, Gilardino, Cassano, Vieri/Iaquinta. That's six, and the article also notes Lippi's "special passion" for Vieri.

Vieri must have pictures of Lippi molesting a goat or a small child. Nothing else can explain this. I would rather have you as the 6th striker. I would rather drag Zola out of retirement.

Am I completely off base thinking he is done, was always overrated and would bring nothing to the table? Seriously, feel free to correct me and disagree with my take on him. No offense will be taken. From what I read about him making the team and what you guys are saying, I am beginning to doubt my analysis of his game. I do realize that he may make the team under a "favored son" appointment from Lippi, but damn, I just don't see it. Believe me, I love what Lippi has done to the team, playing a more offensive and attacking style and doing away with the catenaccio, but how can he seriously consider taking Vieri when he wasn't even dressing for Milan behind Gilardino and Inzaghi?

Vieri is one of Lippi's favourites and that's basically how it is....it doesn't matter how pathetic he plays, Lippi will call him....Euro 2004 should have been his last tournament.....

lol! that's so true man...

anyone with mediterenean origins will recognise immediately that non-nepotism non-favoritism and objective, rational judgement is not one of our strong points...

so true. Toni and Gilardino are firm and strong starters, so he can't be expected to play. Plus, the best quality he possesses is his ability to draw fouls and shorten games, I guess there is some value in that. At least that is what I will be telling myself.

Anything is possible with Lippi who can be a prick sometimes....remember the qualifier in September in Scotland when he sat Gilardino in the stands and decided to start Vieri and Iaquinta, both of whom did fvck all the whole game.

Yeah, I remember. Good thing Pirlo bailed him out of that disaster.

I'm not sure, but Vieri's only 1 goal away from becomming Italy's all-time leading world cup goal scorer so maybe that has something to do with Lippi persisting on him being on the team. Probably a reach. It's just kind of sad how Vieri was wasted by Trappatoni when he had some juice left. Who knows, maybe Vieri will surprise us all...um, yeah.

I'll take Lippi 1,000,000x over Trappatoni...

Agree on Lippi v. Trapp. Although I am not sure he wasted much of Vieri's time. As you can tell from other posts I have always felt Vieri was overrated. Wasted WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too many chances and failed to finish far too often. I would take a Trezeguet over him in half a second. Trezeguet may have his limitations, but the guy is an absolute assassin when he gets chances. IMO, one of the best finishers in the world. Obviously he lacks the skill to set himself up, but he is the perfect compliment to a Nedved, Totti, Del Piero, Zidane type player. I always favored Inzaghi to Vieri, much better finisher. The guys Trapp wasted were Del Piero and Totti, forcing them to play as strikers instead of the playmaking position they are now playing.

2 more goals from Inzaghi. Can Lippi really ignore him any longer?

this thread is strange, hehe, because if you are an italian, you do not want to be with any of those fans, an AC Milan wouldnt like to be with an Inter o Juve fan, LOL :p

My thoughts exactly. I have an Italian friend from Sardinia who of course is a Cagliari supporter. He also kind of likes Internazionale but can't stand AC Milan & Juventus. He tells me that's just the way it is: there's no way a true Italian football fan is rooting for more than one of those 3 clubs.
