Why do you say that?

Ehh, 3 years/120k tuition/lost wages

You are talking close to a quarter-mill in opportunity cost and with the oversaturation of lawyers we've seen in the last 10 years or so (all the baby boomer kids going to law school cause they can) it just isn't very lucrative unless you are in the top of the industry at it.

With a nice GPA from a solid school you should be able to get into a good tier 1 school with a good LSAT though. Again though, only do it if you have a defined career path with it, it is a big commitment. I got a few friends that are lawyers (late 20s) and I'm sure they wouldn't trade it to be a claims processor but they aren't exactly living a life of luxury either.

Tradeoff.

Go to the big Tier 1 law schools and get saddled with probably 100k+ in student loans (could easily be higher if you're talking the really nice schools) but more than likely get a solid job afterwards

or

go to a slightly lesser school and only have 15-30k ish in student loans and have a better opportunity at getting scholarships but risk not getting quite as high a level job.

Not advocating one over the other but that's the decision.

I would have to get student loans

Is it going to better your current position? Why would your bosses and colleagues be convincing you to leave the industry you are in.. better yet, why do they have law degrees and they are in the financial system that you are in? Are they making 100k more than you are? ... my senses tell me it won't be worth it unless you are completely dropping your "dream job" for another dream altogether...

With all this being said, what about lacing up your shoe straps and jumping in the gambling game full time.. has that dream gone out the window already?

My question is why would your bosses be trying to push you into going to school? Do they want you to quit?

my advice: if you are business savy, analytical and confident on your feet you should pursue a career in executive pay consulting...

you can make as much or more than most lawyers and no advanced degree required, everything can be learned on the job

to reach the top of the industry, one must be able to present to Boards and CEOs on sensitive matters and communicate complex topics in a way that folks can understand, but the pay and flexibility are tough to beat

downside is it takes a long time to get to the point where you have your own clients and you spend the first 5 or so years digging through SEC filings and making xls exhibits and ppt reports

here is an internet posting (sample only i dont work for this company)

Both of my bosses have law degrees as well as all their financial certifications. They have been trying to sell me on law school lately. They have peaked my interest since I don't want to be a financial salesman (which is essentially what we are) my whole life and i am an academic at heart. I graduated with 3 majors and a 3.87 GPA from a top 10-20 undergrad business school (depending on who you talk to) but I don't know the first thing about LSAT prep time or the different "tiers" of law school and how important going to a good one is. Also, I am already 27 so I'm not sure if it would be smart to do this now when I wouldn't be graduating until I am in my 30's. I would greatly appreciate any insight from someone who knows something about it.

Thanks in advance

So you obviously never heard of Google. Forget it....... here ya go - http://lmgtfy.com/?q=LSAT+prep+time

Cant everyone tell I have been busy today?
A Justin Cruise career advice thread and I did not get in till page 2.

I am going to be nice to Justin because several people already got on his ass.
And very surprisingly Justin took it in stride.
Since he handled it professionally for once I will bite my tongue on this subject unless JC blows up again in the near future.
Then I will tell him what I really feel about this thread.

I had an old friend kind of shoot down some of my enthusiasm for this idea today.

He graduated this year from an average law school 150K in debt and makes 45k in his first job out of school. yikes.

This is what i'm wondering. Is his situation the rule or the exception?

Justin, you take shit because your posts are all about you wanting posters to talk about you and your life and we simply don't care.

I mean really man, if you truly have the degrees you have with the GPA you have why would you feel the need to come here and ask our advice about how to get into law school? There are several educated posters here who could find out the information you're looking for in 15 minutes. I can't count on one hand how many times you've posted on this forum you attended a top 20 business school with a GPA above a 3.8. Nobody else here does that.

It's just narcissistic.

Of course I googled it already. I just wanted to hear some first hand experiences aside from countless articles written online by "experts". And in fact I did get some solid advice.
