Rob, history didn't start in 1988 ya know.

As PBR notes in his next post, the Doors were hardly acid rock.

They were straight out blues rock roadhouse bluesmen with a nice mix of what would 20 years later be called "rap" as laid down by The Lizard King at various random points throughout their performances.

And now that you mention it, FUNK - Jefferson Airplane/Starship definitely in Top 20

Jimmi Hendrix Experience/ Allman Bros. Band/ Crosby, Stills, Nash,& Young

Very strong trifecta with the ABB being a solid #2 overall to The Doors

Hendrix best work likely came with Band of Gypsies

Here's CHANGES, featuring the great Buddy Miles on vocals

Grateful Dead, played more shows and was seen by more fans than any other American band for a reason. Plus who else could play a 6 night run and play 20 different songs every night without playing the same one twice ? Jerry On !

honorable mention to Frank Zappa and the Mothers.

Not in the top 10 but Pearl Jam deserves mention. Another deserving mention is the Pumpkins.

Pearl Jam needs to be added... Tons of sales, constantly touring, don't half-ass it.

Journey should be in there.

Guns'n'Roses needs to be in there, along /w Metallica.

Kiss & The Ramones should be up there too.

Aerosmith & Van Halen, although lots of good bands listed.

At least two that were not American. Zep, my all time fav, and Styx.
