Report: U.S. Attorney John Durham Investigating Clinton Foundation

U.S. Attorney John Durham, who is investigating the FBI’s conduct in its probe of President Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, is also probing the Clinton Foundation, according to a report Thursday in the New York Times.

As Breitbart contributor Peter Schweizer argued in his 2015 book, Clinton Cash: The Untold Story of How and Why Foreign Governments and Businesses Helped Make Bill and Hillary Rich, the Clinton Foundation appeared to be a vehicle for former President Bill Clinton and then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to sell influence and access.

It was widely suspected that Hillary Clinton used an illicit private email server, and destroyed her emails, to hide communications that might document the Foundation’s activities.

Durham has already obtained one guilty plea, from former FBI lawyer Kevin Clinesmith, who admitted he altered an email to make it appear as if former Trump campaign aide Carter Page was not a CIA source, misleading the FISA court into renewing a surveillance warrant.

In an article Thursday titled “In Politically Charged Inquiry, Durham Sought Details About Scrutiny of Clintons,” the Times reported:

It turns out that Mr. Durham also focused attention on certain political enemies of Mr. Trump: the Clintons.
Mr. Durham, the U.S. attorney in Connecticut assigned by Mr. Barr to review the Russia inquiry, has sought documents and interviews about how federal law enforcement officials handled an investigation around the same time into allegations of political corruption at the Clinton Foundation, according to people familiar with the matter.
Mr. Durham’s team members have suggested to others that they are comparing the two investigations as well as examining whether investigators in the Russia inquiry flouted laws or policies. It was not clear whether Mr. Durham’s investigators were similarly looking for violations in the Clinton Foundation investigation, nor whether the comparison would be included or play a major role in the outcome of Mr. Durham’s inquiry.

The Times credits Schweizer for raising allegations that gained the attention of investigators at the FBI.

An inspector general’s report in 2018 that examined the FBI’s investigation into Hillary Clinton’s emails found that former director James Comey had made “serious” errors of judgment, and that the investigation may have been tainted by political bias. Though it found no evidence of criminal conduct, questions remained — both about the FBI and about Clinton’s emails.

New FBI Texts: Agents Bought Liability Insurance over Russia Investigation

New text messages released by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Wednesday evening suggest that FBI agents involved in investigating Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign bought professional liability insurance for fear of being exposed and sued.

The text messages, reported by The Federalist and included in court filings by Sidney Powell, were part of a new batch of documents released as exculpatory evidence in the prosecution of former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn. The evidence was released after a review of the case by U.S. Attorney Jeffrey Jensen, ordered by Attorney General William Barr.

In one text, an agent speculated that they would be “screwed” when a new attorney general began asking questions about the investigation, possibly after leaks to the New York Times or other media outlets.

One text, dated Jan. 10, 2017, read: “we all went and purchased professional liability insurance.” Other texts discussed the rules for reimbursement of that insurance.

Powell also pointed to text messages that suggest FBI agents believed that some officials in the bureau were biased in favor of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during the 2016 election in arguing that the case against her client should be dismissed.

Other text messages suggest that FBI agents deliberately kept the case open despite finding no evidence against Flynn. In one exchange, agents appeared to comment on a briefing that in the Oval Office on January 5, 2017, with then-President Barack Obama, Vice President Joe Biden, and several senior law enforcement and intelligence officials present.

One text reported that “people here are scrambling for info to support certain things and its a mad house.” Another suggested that “Trump was right,” a comment that may have referred to Trump’s Jan. 3, 2017, tweet saying the FBI was delaying a briefing on alleged Russian interference in the election because it needed more time to “build a case.”

Powell said that the FBI’s “hideous abuse of power and travesty of justice” meant that the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) request to dismiss the case against Flynn should be granted.

Flynn had previously pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI, but withdrew his plea after more exculpatory evidence emerged.

Judge Emmet Sullivan has resisted that request, fighting Powell and the DOJ in the courts to keep the case open.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announces 134 felony voter fraud charges in connection with 2018 Dem primary

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced four arrests Thursday on dozens of felony charges in connection with an alleged vote harvesting scheme during the 2018 Democratic primary elections in Gregg County.

“It is an unfortunate reality that elections can be stolen outright by mail ballot fraud,” Paxton said in a statement. “Election fraud, particularly an organized mail ballot fraud scheme orchestrated by political operatives, is an affront to democracy and results in voter disenfranchisement and corruption at the highest level.”

Gregg County Commissioner Shannon Brown, Marlena Jackson, Charlie Burns and DeWayne Ward face 134 felony charges in total, according to Paxton’s office. The allegations include election fraud, tampering with a governmental record, mail-in ballot fraud and more.

“To increase the pool of ballots needed to swing the race in Brown’s favor, the group targeted young, able-bodied voters to cast ballots by mail by fraudulently claiming the voters were ‘disabled,’ in most cases without the voters’ knowledge or consent,” Paxton’s office alleged.

Of the total charges, 97 felony counts were leveled against Jackson, 30 of them for alleged election fraud.

Many of the charges accuse her of fraudulently marking applications for other people, claiming they were eligible for mail-in ballots due to disabilities when they were not disabled.

Commissioner Brown faces 23 counts, and Burns and Ward face eight and six respectively. Penalties range from six months in jail to 99 years in prison.

The primary race in question saw Brown beat a primary challenger by just five votes, 1,047 to 1,042, the Longview News-Journal reported – with 787 mail-in ballots cast.
And Brown is Jackson’s husband, according to the outlet.

“Those who try to manipulate the outcome of elections in Texas must be held accountable,” Paxton said.

The arrests come weeks after Paxton sued in another county and warned them to stop sending unsolicited mail-in ballot applications to voters in a separate case.
