Lawyer found dead in upstate NY may be linked to New Jersey shooting at judge's house

A man possibly involved in the fatal shooting of a federal court judge’s son in New Jersey was found dead in New York’s Sullivan County on Monday afternoon, according to multiple reports.

The man, an attorney from New York City, is being investigated in connection with the shooting, a law enforcement official and a judiciary official told the Associated Press.

The man had appeared before the judge in the past, the officials said.

The man was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, law enforcement officials said.

Additional information was not immediately available.

The wife of a British aristocrat and frequent flyer on Jeffrey Epstein’s ‘Lolita Express’ has stepped down from her role volunteering for the UK’s National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (NSPCC).

Clare Hazell – an interior designer who became the Countess of Iveagh after her 2001 marriage to the 4th Earl of Guinness (of the brewing dynasty) – took 32 flights on Epstein’s infamous airplane between 1998 and 2000, which included “trips to his homes in New York, Florida, the Caribbean and New Mexico,” according to the Daily Mail. Epstein accompanied Hazell on all but one of the trips aboard the plane, per flight logs.

Hazell, now known as Lady Iveagh, worked for Epstein ‘Madam’ Ghislaine Maxwell according to accuser Maria Farmer, who says she also interacted with Iveagh at the Ohio estate of Victoria’s Secret boss Leslie Wexner. Farmer said that Hazell “liked having nice drinks, piles of cash and nice outfits.” She was listed in Jeffrey Epstein’s famous Black Book as “Clare Hazell-Iveagh.”

GOP wins major 'election integrity' lawsuit in Florida, where Dems sought taxpayer-funded mail-in ballots

Democrats agreed to a settlement that dismissed the case just before the trial was set to begin on Monday

Republicans on Monday appeared to soundly defeat a Democratic-led legal effort to force taxpayers in Florida to fund mail-in ballot postage fees, eliminate ballot-return deadlines and strike down laws restricting the practice of "ballot harvesting" – which allows political operatives to retrieve vote-by-mail ballots en masse and return them to polling places.

The Democratic super PAC Priorities USA had sued the Republican Party and GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis, but agreed to a settlement that dismissed the case just before trial was set to begin on Monday. The agreement includes provisions to educate voters about how to register to vote and cast mail-in ballots, while also educating election supervisors about prepaid postage.

In July, Hinkle denied another request for an injunction, in part because the imminent trial meant that there was no risk of severe imminent harm.

The judge also found that the plaintiffs hadn't adequately shown that a secret ballot could be secure from fraud risks.

Republicans quickly cheered the case's apparent end on Monday.

“Today’s victory is a win for Florida voters and a win for election integrity,” RNC Chair Ronna McDaniel in a statement. “Democrats’ assault on our elections process is not based on fact or reason, which is why they are dismissing every claim in their radical suit. The RNC will continue to step in and fight back against Democrat attempts to circumvent existing law and weaken our elections process.”

California rejected 102,423 mail-in ballots because of mistakes

California Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom calls mail-in voting safe and secure, but it's not perfect. More than 100,000 mail-in ballots were rejected by election officials in the state's March presidential primary.

The six-figure tally highlights the big gap in the state's effort to ensure every vote is counted, as Democrats and Republicans argue over the integrity of vote-by-mail elections.

State data obtained by The Associated Press shows 102,428 mail-in ballots were disqualified in 58 counties, mostly because they arrived too late.

Also, nearly 28,000 were canceled because they either didn't have a signature, or the signature didn't match the one on record for the voter.

Matthew Borges, a lobbyist and former chairman of the Ohio Republican Party, was arrested in connection to a year-long $60 million federal bribery scheme. According to prosecutors, Borges and three other lobbyists allegedly conspired with the Republican Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives to secure a $1.3 billion taxpayer bailout for an Ohio-based energy company, FirstEnergy Solutions.

Law enforcement officials claim that in exchange for helping FirstEnergy receive the bailout, which was meant to prevent the shutdown of two nuclear power plants, a nonprofit controlled by the House Speaker received $60 million.

Trump Signs Order Excluding Illegal Aliens From Census Numbers Used for Congressional Districts

President Donald Trump signed a memorandum on July 21 ordering the U.S. government to exclude illegal aliens from the calculations used to apportion congressional seats, based on the population survey conducted during the 2020 Census.

After the Supreme Court rejected the White House’s bid to add a citizenship question to the 2020 census, Trump ordered all federal agencies to share information with the Department of Commerce (DOC) so that it could make an appropriate determination on the number of citizens, non-citizens, and illegal aliens in the United States.

A number of states have enacted so-called sanctuary laws to shield illegal aliens from capture by federal authorities. The memo notes that states that thwart the enforcement of federal laws should not be rewarded with increased representation in Congress. According to the memo, one state has an estimated 2.2 million illegal aliens, who, if counted in the apportionment, would give the state two or three additional congressional seats.
The results of the decennial census are used to determine the apportionment of seats in the House of Representatives and the distribution of federal aid, among other matters. Once the DOC completes its apportionment calculations, the president transmits the final determination to Congress.

The president’s memo cites a Supreme Court opinion that determined that it is “the President’s personal transmittal of the report to Congress” that “settles the apportionment” of representatives among the states, and the president’s discretion to settle the apportionment is more than “ceremonial or ministerial” and is essential “to the integrity of the process.”

“There used to be a time when you could proudly declare, ‘I am a citizen of the United States.’ But now, the radical left is trying to erase the existence of this concept and conceal the number of illegal aliens in our country,” the president said in a statement.

“This is all part of a broader left-wing effort to erode the rights of Americans citizens, and I will not stand for it.”

The U.S. said Wednesday that it has ordered China to close its consulate in Houston “to protect American intellectual property and American’s private information.”China condemned the move, which comes at a time of rising tensions between the world’s two largest economies. Foreign ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin called it “an outrageous and unjustified move that will sabotage relations between the two countries.”

He warned of firm countermeasures if the U.S. does not reverse its decision, which he said the consulate was informed of on Tuesday.

“The unilateral closure of China’s consulate general in Houston within a short period of time is an unprecedented escalation of its recent actions against China,” Wang said at a daily news briefing in Beijing.

Besides its embassy in Beijing, the U.S. has five consulates in mainland China, according to its website. They are in Shanghai, Guangzhou, Chengdu, Wuhan and Shenyang.

The U.S. did not provide any details on its allegations in a brief statement.

“The United States will not tolerate (China’s) violations of our sovereignty and intimidation of our people, just as we have not tolerated (its) unfair trade practices, theft of American jobs, and other egregious behavior,” said the statement, which was attributed to State Department spokesperson Morgan Ortagus.

Videos show flames, activity in courtyard of Consulate General of China in Houston

Media reports in Houston said that authorities had responded to reports of a fire at the Chinese Consulate. Witnesses said that people were burning paper in what appeared to be trash cans, the Houston Chronicle reported, citing police.

Police were told that occupants were given until 4 p.m. Friday to leave the property, the Chronicle said.

Houston police said in a tweet that officers responded to “a meet the firefighter” call at the Chinese Consulate building at 3417 Montrose Blvd. The tweet said that smoke was observed in an outdoor courtyard area, and that officers were not allowed to enter the building.

Twitter bans 7,000 QAnon accounts, limits 150,000 others as part of broad crackdown

The company will classify QAnon as coordinated harmful activity in part because of a rise in harassment targeting high-profile critics of the president.

Twitter announced Tuesday that it has begun taking sweeping actions to limit the reach of QAnon content, banning many of the conspiracy theory's followers because of problems with harassment and misinformation.

Twitter will stop recommending accounts and content related to QAnon, including material in email and follow recommendations, and it will take steps to limit circulation of content in features like trends and search.

The action will affect about 150,000 accounts, said a spokesperson, who asked to remain unnamed because of concerns about the targeted harassment of social media employees.

The spokesperson said that as part of its new policy, the company had taken down more than 7,000 QAnon accounts in the last few weeks for breaking its rules on targeted harassment.

The sweeping enforcement action will ban QAnon-related terms from appearing in trending topics and the platform's search feature, ban known QAnon-related URLs and prohibit "swarming" of people who are baselessly targeted by coordinated harassment campaigns pushed by QAnon followers.
