Someone just told me that learning a new language is like putting together a big jigsaw puzzle. The more pieces you put in place the easier it is for the next pieces . That makes sense

Think you're regionally lucky.

Mexicans here burn the flag, hate the U.S. and are openly racist and talk shit about the U.S.

Yep, and those are the types of Mexicans/Latins that the majority of Americanized Mexicans are ashamed of & want out of here...

BTW, it's hard and time consuming, especially if you want to learn to a level that isn't embarrassing. Nothing worse than listening to an American speak Spanish using the English pronunciation.

I am Romanian and Russian. No Latino blood.

Besides HS Spanish and a major in college, here is the bottom line:

6 months of grammar studying. This depends on daily/ hourly per your cognitive skills and study habits.
The rest is vocabulary. You should be able to converse at college level in less than 1 year.

Business papers and executive letter drafts will take more time and will depend on various resources and tolls to ensure that there are no mistakes.

Probably the best self investment for a solid career, less stress when traveling in Spanish speaking countries and the ability to live abroad to the max.

Good luck...

How can it possibly help you to learn by just listening to a Spanish radio station.

I would think you would need pictures and people's reactions to put the words together.

I could probably listen to Spanish radio for a million year and never learn how to speak it.

it does help to just listen, sorta kinda train your head into listening spanish and you'll find that soon enough you understand and recognize more words everyday... I did that when i was kid learning english: only engilsh TV stations (NBC, ABC, CBS, ESPN with SAP) tv shows and movies (SAP) and whenveer i would rent a DVD I would go with english audio and english subtitles as well. Also, listening to english music helped a lot.
