Yeah, and Texas is right next door too. The immersion is necessary because when you get frustrated, you will look for the first exit back to your world.
Well I can immerse myself with French speaking people and I do speak passable French but I am hardly ever exposed to Spanish speaking people in everyday life. Guess I need to start watching Univision.

There is another language around them parts that I'm not sure even immersion could help you learn.
If I were going to guide somebody and they couldn't do immersion, I would suggest 1) private intensive intructions, 2) the Oxford spanish-english dictionary (the one that is 4 inches thick) that you carry with you EVERYWHERE, 3) a notebook where you repeatedly wrote verb conjugations/phrases a la Bart Simpson on the Blackboard, and 4) pick up some good novels and read. I have a buddy that learned English by watching movies and using the subtitles.
Is your wife voting trump
I took 5 years of French in JHS and High school, and was quite proficient at it. Then I took 2 years of Spanish in College, and found it very difficult because of knowing the French, and thinking in French. They were too similar, so try as hard as you can to not think French. Also, I found it very helpful to watch Spanish TV stations, so you might be joking about Univision, but that actaully helped me more than the Spanish Classes to pick up conversational Spanish. Especially if you can watch things that you already knew in English, like a Movie you've seen.Well I can immerse myself with French speaking people and I do speak passable French but I am hardly ever exposed to Spanish speaking people in everyday life.
