The HOF is mainly a popularity contest with a few of the lesser known artists thrown in each year to make them look legit. I can think of so many that should have gotten in long ago that it almost makes it look like a joke.. Captain Beefheart, Warren Zevon, Doobie Brothers, ELO, The Guess Who, Jethro Tull, The Moody Blues, Procol Harum, Steppenwolf, Steve Miller Band, X, Yes, The Zombies.

my view, I listen to new music all the time, my fav bands very few would know here. That's not good or bad. My point is, any comments are about bands EVERYONE knows, I;e (cattle) , so the opinions, in my view are limited. There is a ton of free, new music on the internet, college radio, etc.

This is how I look at......so the dr phil tv show is popular and successful, you can have an opinion on that. But it is not worth you're time.

Just because bands sell records , in my view, does not mean artistic cred.

The Punk Genre of rock, might be the only one where getting into the RRHOF isn't seen as a good thing.

Question to Metal Heads: What about Ozzy?

Ha! You could be right about the punk bands. I've never thought of that. It kind of takes away their street cred if somebody popular recognizes them as artistic. The Replacements are probably thinking don't pick us." don't pick us." Seriously, I think what this whole thing is about is what looks good for presentation sake when it comes to the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame Concert that goes in conjunction with this. They aren't going to present too much of one genre or time in rock & roll or it makes the program a little stale with less variety. They don't want too many hair bands and metal bands. And at the same time don't want too many 50's and 60's acts going in at one time. I think all of those artists we mentioned will eventually get in. But some of them are dead or no longer influential in any way, and just not a priority on their list.

Top hits, #1's have limited band input, it's all management, production and promotion. That is a fact, greenday did nothing new, that already had been done for 20 years. The rx is funny as for music, cattle to the slaughter, very few people here have a clue to original music.

Pandora is elevator music

some of you people put way too much thought into music.
Its not as deep and complicated as some of you mahe it out to be.

If it comes on the radio and I enoy listening to it = good

If it comes on the radio and I don't enjoy listening to it= bad

I like Green Day, but they are too new of an act for the HOF. I just don't get the order of these bands at all. And some of these acts are long overdue or too late. The Butterfield Blues Band should have been Hall staples a long time ago, even though you heard very little of their music on top 40 radio. Which seems to be the only thing casual listeners care about these days. Speaking of too late, thanks for electing Lou Reed after he's dead. I'm sure he appreciates it. I like Bill Withers. All two of his songs...

Greenday's been around since the 80's, they're not really a new act for those of us from Cali that grew up in the Punk scene. They've been around just as long as Nirvana maybe longer, and IMO they're far better than some of the metal bands I've heard suggested. Plus they've been more successful than the other punk bands that are in.

Green Day is a "punk" pop band. They had some great hits. I don't care for them, especially after they released an album called "American Idiot", but that's my own personal preference. I can see where they have the commercial popularity to be elected however.

But to discount Deep Purple and Iron Maiden tells me you really don't know much about those two bands. Iron Maiden could fill a 50,000 seat arena....today! They WERE what Metallica is before Metallica existed. Iron Maiden & Black Sabbath are among the grandfathers of modern heavy metal. The movie "Rock Star" (w/ Mark Wahlberg) is loosely based off of Judas Priest. Deep Purple is ranked in the top 50 of almost all of the VH1 & MTV polls of greatest bands of all time. They are far from a one-hit wonder....Smoke on the Water?? HELLO!

Just saying, it's ridiculous that they are not included. Ridiculous!

I would say that the Sex Pistol, The Clash, and The Ramones, are also "POP" Punk then, since it's the same sound, at least Green Day's early stuff. Hardcore Punk came around which became just "Hardcore", but that's not what original punk was, original punk was closer to power pop.

My Older brother was into the Metal, Iron Maiden, Slayer ect.. I know they have loyal fan bases that have stuck with them, but Greenday is on another level, they've sold over 75 million records world wide, which makes them one of the most successful bands of all time. They are a first time ballot for sure and deserve to be in.

Barry Manilow, Meatloaf and New Kids on the Block have sold more albums than Green Day but whatever.

This is the problem. Green Day has just been around since the 80's. They barely qualify for the 25 year first album release requirement. There are just too many older and more deserving bands waiting in line to be elcted to the HOF. Kurt Cobain and Nirvana made a huge impact from the Seattle gunge scene. So I can understand why they got in. Green Day never had that kind of impact to be deserving this soon. Like coach said, Deep Purple should have been voted in. And really should have been inducted before Jon Lord died a couple years ago. I would love to have seen him do one last performance on stage with some of the original band members. Yes also falls into that group of progressive rock bands that should have been elected. And of course my favorite alltime band Procol Harum should have qualified long ago. Especially since they had ties with Robin Trower, who could get in on his own merits. Plus they wrote what was just about the most perfect and memorable rock song of all time A Whiter Shade Of Pale. Nuff said

I think GreenDay finished what Nirvana started, and had a huge impact in putting Punk Rock back on the map. Never got the whole Nirvana Grunge thing. They were very much part of the Punk scene in the 80's 90's where I grew up, and to me they sound nothing like STP, Alice and Chains or Pearl Jam. GreenDay is the best selling band of their genre, and should be in along with Nirvana, that would have sold more had Kurt not killed himself.
