Only one player in baseball history has ever had a better day in a game deciding a pennant
or deciding a playoff series. Murphy's performance was historical. In 1948 Lou Boudreau
the Cleveland manager & SS went 4 for 4 with 2 HR's against the Redsox to propel his team
to the World Series & also that one day performance sealed him the MVP award over Williams
who had led the league in BA .369 slugging .615 & OPS 1.102 but was only 1 for 4 a single
when it really counted. If the Sox won that game & therefore the pennant
Williams probably would have won the MVP in 1948.
