accent was difficult to understand, Sorta like when I visited relatives & took a side trip to Inverness in the Scottish Highlands.
Those two groups both English speaking would need a translator to understand each other.

I know these areas very well neverbend and I can attest to your assessment of these folks as being "salt of the earth". Like most mountain folk, they are leery of outsiders but once accepted, they will give you the shirt off of their back. A hand shake goes a long way with the folks from Abingdon, Richlands and Grundy and their word is their bond.

Virginia is a big state and I have traveled to those areas many times. They have been devastated by the war on coal but they keep plugging along.

Definitely a good bunch of guys I befriended from western Virginia while at school, coming down south from
cosmopolitan NY. I do remember the guy from Abington, he was a center on the team
studied his fanny off, seemed like he was so serious about making the folks back home proud,
sophmore year he came back married to his highschool girlfriend and moved off campus. Lost contact
years ago but I bet he went back to Abington to teach and coach football.

There wasn't a bad guy in the bunch, but as you hinted at they were in a sense provincial.

As for Dafinch I was trifling with the poor guy but got really bored with the 'Trump sucks anyone
