can someone embed this video, I really can't embed videos anymore, I've tried everything (does google chrome have something to do with this?)

anyhow, I can't help but to wonder why Craig's 1st step off of 3rd base was evidently towards 2nd base as he's two feet inside inside the line. I don't think he did anything intentional, he just stumbled that way after the play at third. How would Middlebrooks know Craig's base path would be a step (stumble) towards 2nd before running towards the plate.

and when Joyce said the defensive players legs were on the chalk, let's just say that's as accurate as his call at 1B taking away a perfect game, somewhere between 2 and 3 feet off

just such a weird ending to a game, one we'll never forget

PS: and it appears Middlebrooks was lifting his legs to be clear of the traditional base path, he didn't know Craig wanted to run on the infield grass :)

How the fuck can any umpire on any level in any situation including 1st inning of opening day of the fat bastard sunday morning OUI league call obstruction on something like this? You got to be in a the third day of an overdose of an adrenechrome bender to make that stretch on that rule. To say that umpire made the call with spirit of the rule in mind is so fucking absurd is beyond reason.

I got your basepath right here.

Here is Jim Joyce looking at a pair of tits in the 3rd row. While Craig Allen heads home via the pitching mound.
How would you like to have that ump operating on your kids eyes?

LMAO!!! I wonder how big those tits were?

It was a PATHETIC call for sure, but life goes on. Here's hoping they can win again tonight and head home with a lead.

during the coverage of game 4, Fox Sports reports that Joe Torre says MLB will review the obstruction rule during the off season, I wonder why that may be?

would anyone be surprised if they tweak it?

im sure they will....it usually takes an incident in an important game to get these guys to look at rule changes.....

I keep looking at the play and i guess i understand why he called it that way at the time.....but sucks to end a game that way...especially a world series game. They need to be ended the right way....like a pickoff at 1st base when maybe the greatest hitter in post season history stands at home plate.

from that view, it's obvious why he said Middlebrook was lying on the chalk, he had no fucking clue :)

drama yes.....but from my seat....pretty bad baseball right now. Mental and physical errors all over. still loving it though

Yes I agree that "fundamentals" have gone by the wayside for a lot of plays, not to mention management as well. No clue why he kept Breslow in that game after the lefty gets on and THEN he puts Lackey in when Tazawa only pitched to ONE batter and he's been AWESOME in the 8th inning all Postseason? I'm not one to argue with success...I'm just shaking my head and saying WTF???

Some terrible fielding plays on Boston's end, some terrible batting on STL end, bad managerial decisions on both ends, and some HORRENDOUS umpiring (at times). I think last night's home plate ump was pretty consistent but he too made some weird calls on both sides. Crazy World Series. I can't picture it ending any other way than with something CRAZY (like a walkoff grand slam?). Hoping it doesn't though. Looking for a couple of plain jane 5-1 wins by Boston in the next two games puff_>>

I have been totally confused by the red sox manager.....i think he's made some really odd choices. Did anyone ask why he didnt walk Jay to pitch to Kozma? Then Lackey comes in last night.

You're right....entire series has been odd....bad managing, bad play, bad umpires..

You don't understand because you don't know what the basepath is. It is not a straight line in the field of play, it is the path that the player is taking. People round bases all the time because you have to. After the collision, Craig got up to go home, and he was obstructed. Intentional, unintentional, it doesn't matter. Still looks to me like it was intentional. Unless you think getting up means keeping your whole body down while lifting your legs to trip someone.

Get over it. They got the call right.

Umpiring involves watching everything. You constantly have to watch multiple things at once. Sure, he was watching the ball, and if you take a split second picture, it doesn't look like he was also watching the runner. But he was. He got the call right. There is no argument. Sorry your team lost.

do you understand the arguments most people are making? seriously? what is it I'm arguing that I'm wrong about that your expertise overshadows?
I'm saying you don't understand the rules. Period.

Jim Joyce is not a bad umpire. Not the best, but not bad at all. Everyone makes bad calls, and it's unfortunate that he will always be thought of as a bad umpire because of that one call at the worst time in the perfect game. I would not hire CB Bucknor and Angel Hernandez to do a high school game.

then I'm saying you're a jackass, and argue like one too

you can't point to something I said that is wrong, so you choose to go ignorant, period

I've ran baseball leagues, co-founded fall baseball leagues, co-founded travel leagues, hosted and directed LL, BR and ECTB Tournaments and managed teams to BR District and MM State titles.

probably know more about baseball than you, just not simple minded enough to call myself an expert

You're just like the dealer that doesn't know how to play blackjack. Have you been to Professional Umpire School? Have you umpired Division 1 baseball? Didn't think so.

A non professional umpire trying to critique umpires is like a redneck trying to correct French grammar.

I would be willing to bet that you've never even heard of the intentional drop rule.

Yes, I have. Wrong sport but it's when Cowboy receivers intentionally drop balls and then blame Romo for throwing a bad pass. Jerry put in a 10K fine per drop in place and dubbed it the "intentional drop rule".

Stop trying to act like you're a genius because you've been to umpire school. I've never played in the NFL or reffed a game there either, but I knew that Seattle's win last year against Gbay was complete BS. I also know that the umpire blew the call at second base in Game 1 (even though they all met and over ruled him). And I know the strike zone in Game 3 as called was a COMPLETE FUCKING joke. As to whether or not the call on obstruction was correct or not, I think it's subjective. I'd bet 90%+ of pro umps would say it was with 20/20 hindsight. In that moment probably not even close to that percentage.

Your insinuation that non-professionals can't critique professionals (including umpires) though is pathetic. Human beings make mistakes, including so-called Pros. Sometimes they're obvious. Sometimes the general public is just plain ignorant and doesn't understand the whole picture. BUT there is NOBODY that is above being scrutinized or critiqued. Get over yourself.
