[h=2]President-elect Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans love to say how unaffordable Obamacare is. But completely repealing the health reform law would be pretty costly to the federal budget.[/h] A full repeal of Obamacare would cost $350 billion over the next decade, according to a new analysis from the bipartisan Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget. This makes its wholesale dismantling much more complicated.

Obamacare was carefully crafted in 2010 so that it didn't add to the federal deficit -- in fact, it boosted revenues slightly. The law affects the federal budget in three ways: coverage provisions, taxes and fees, and Medicare components.

Here's the impact of repealing each (through 2027):
--Coverage provisions, which include the individual and employer mandates, subsidies and Medicaid expansion: Savings $1.55 trillion
--Taxes and fees levied on high-income Americans, insurers, providers and others, as well as the Cadillac tax on high-cost insurance plans: Cost $800 billion
--Medicare components, such as slowing the growth of provider rates and lowering payments to Medicare Advantage insurers: Cost $1.1 trillion
Getting rid of all three would blow a hole in the budget even before Republicans come up with a replacement plan, which will also need to be funded.
At this point, Congressional Republicans are focusing on repealing the coverage provisions, taxes and fees through a process known as budget reconciliation.

Eliminating all the coverage provisions and taxes and fees immediately would save the federal government $750 billion, according to the committee. However, lawmakers are expected to delay ending the exchanges, subsidies and Medicaid expansion until they have a replacement plan in place, which could take two years or more. Keeping these going for two years would lower the expected savings to $550 billion.
Republicanshave moved away from dismantling some of the Medicare components, which could turn repeal into a money-losing act for the federal government.

The savings matter since the Republicans need all the money they can get to pay for their replacement plan, which will likely include tax credits to help Americans who buy insurance in the individual market. Without a hefty cushion from the partial Obamacare repeal, lawmakers will either have to find the funds elsewhere in the budget or provide stingiercredits -- which will make it harder for people to afford coverage.
Some health care policy experts are pressing lawmakers to delay repealing the taxes and fees.
"These tax cuts would make it much more difficult to achieve a sustainable replacement plan that provides meaningful coverage without increasing deficits," wrote Loren Adler and Paul Ginsburg in a Brookings analysis last month.

Uh, oh, a lot of success stories in his thread.

this is funny, especially knowing what we know now

it may be the single biggest reason democrats have lost all the seats they've lost at every level

"if you like your existing insurance, you can keep it, PERIOD". Obama now admits he knowingly and willingly lied

Um, you act like all lies are equal. A lie that costs the country trillions of dollars isn't the same as a lie about having sex with an intern.

Healthcare in the states is a joke at this point. Only people that can afford it are teachers and govt employees. My sister works for government and pays $50 a month for family medical. She cries because they raised it. I tell her normal people are paying avg of 150 a week and get a reality check.

Agree 100%, teachers and govt employees need a reality check!

Just used OC My bill is $34,000 with Deductibles and Out of Pocket my cost will be..... $400/$2175 plus $108 monthly premium =$3871/12 or $322 mpnth.... I think that is affordable/fair but can't compare to how it was b4 OC

In 2011 I had similar procedure bill was over $200,000 and my cost was $0 with ABC Insurance I had from $330 Million year Tobacco Settlement that will continue thru 2025. What happened to this Money? It was diverted...... Shush()*Don't ask b/c they won't tell!

Hope Trump follows thru with......

there's a reason why politicians lie the way they do, one party can get away with it because their constituents really don't care, they're only concerned with their own special interest

I'm sorry but every objective health care site that rates Health care in 1st world Countries, consistently has the US at or near the bottom of any such list. Sure there will be some individuals who have different experiences, but they are the anomoly, not the norm. ObamaCare was a very half assed attempt to fix it, and it has overall probably been a narrow net positive, in that alot more people are covered, but there's no excuse why everyone isn't covered, like they are in most of the civilized world.
and yet the united states still ranks as the top nation for any individual with money to get treated. people from all over the world want to train in the united states, and our largest academic institutions have the best and brightest minds without question. few exceptions exist like certain procedures such as gastric cancer lymph node dissection (that is owned by the japanese since they have the highest rates of gastric cancer). you can have the most efficient healthcare system yet still have shitty healthcare.just because food or cost of living is cheaper in other nations doesn't make their nation better than ours. why should healthcare be an exception?

there's one health care study, done in 2000 and never done again ....................it was never done again because the people doing the study acknowledged it was impossible to do an accurate study, too many variables were measured inconsistently...................and why did that study rate us low?..... because we spend too much money.........not because of actual HEALTH CARE, but because we spend too much money ..........................any argument suggesting we're not at or near the top for actual HEALTH CARE services is pure idiocy..........."I'm sorry".........but those are the facts..................PS: the the money, as in the people that have money..............nobody be going to Cuba y'all

I want to thank God for Trump - that piece of shit Obama told the American people that Obamacare was not a tax and then went to the SC and told them it is a tax - individuals earning over 200K or families over 250K have to pay an additional 3.8% to fund Obamacare - Trump's policy repeals the tax - a family with 3 kids earning 250K is anything but rich - of course none of this is of any concern to you

He increased income taxes on on many families earning far less than $ 250,000, that's just another myth. I can and have given specific examples many times over the years....................AND, the Obamacare penalty can apply to lower income families too, the income exclusion from the penalty only applies to the lowest income democrats (they always give kickbacks to their base)
