Has any player ever played there way out of the HALL OF FAME?

Clint Hartung the most hyped ballplayer ever!

CLINT HARTUNG

Hartung came to the majors amid such hoopla that one observer said all Hartung had to do was sit still and he'd make the Hall of Fame. Clint hit home runs during spring training, adding fuel to the fire.

When World War II was winding down a youngster with one year of minor league experience pitching service ball who seemed to be the second coming of Babe Ruth. He was 25-0 in Army games and averaged 15 strikeouts/game while batting .567. The Giants signed Hartung for a shocking $35,000 after the war ended and the 24-year-old made his major league debut in 1947.

He was known as the "Hondo Hurricane" after his hometown in Texas, and he had a decent first year, going 9-7 and batting .308. But after that he was never better than mediocre, eventually becoming the symbol for over-hyped youngsters who never fulfilled their potential.

Also Joe Jackson! Easy Hall of Famer if he had not been involved in the 1919 World Series Fiasco.

Sammy Sosa's caught corking his bat on National TV pretty much turned a lot of Americans away from him and of course his " No hablo English " before congress solidified his demise IMHO Same goes for Bonds, McQuire and Roger Clemens

Ryne Sanderg is in, first ballot.

If you are a total stud it does not matter how much you suck in the end.

Willie Mays was brutal his last 3 season and it did not matter. Carlton another great example. Im talking about the borderline players.

I think the answer is Barry bonds, and the other steroids guys. Bonds would have been in if he would have retired when he was 35 years old. But, he decided to go for the homerun record and take a horse dose of steroids. He played himself out of the HoF.
