I really enjoy following the public debates that this race for the White House is generating . Here's a few "spins" on the Iraq issue :
Its about 6,000 years that the region has been known for its instability and lack of ability to build a democratic consciousness within its social tissue. Given this factual and historic perspective of the region I lean to share the belief that many international observers have expressed as to perceiving the U.S. intervention in Iraq rather naive and arrogant. Naive because the current Administration has failed to build a political coalition, arrogant because one of the milestones of the Iraqi invasion is to bring democracy ( a completely unknown concept as previously mentioned ) to the country.
Today's outcome, primarily the disintegration of Iraq under the pressure of several ethnic groups and bordering countries, was widely forecasted BEFORE the invasion by many European Leaders who opposed this action. Democracy and reconstruction may not succeed in such scenario, as Iran, Syria, partly Jordan, Kurds and to some extent Saudi Arabia are all busy trying to grab a slice of Iraq instead.
A further remark is to Bush comments about Kerry's flip floppings. Well....America was brought to war because of WMD possessed and ready to be utilized by Saddam....whose removal has been later utilized as the reason of intervention. This is more than flip flopping, this is flat out lying to the people of The United States of America.
Is the world better without Saddam ? I once again share the opinion of the many that saw this war as the wrong war at the wrong time. Saddam represented no threat at international level. Due to the stringently enforced sanctions he was basically a lame duck busy maintining some sort of grip on his own people. Is Iraq better off without Saddam ? Islamic Fundamentalism ( once contained in Iraq, the only Arab Country that was not fighting or denying or worse prosecuting Catholics who happened to be the second largest religion in the country ) is spreading its seeds of hate and intolerance.
Last, but not least....earlier this morning all international online newspapers were reporting of the latest kamikaze bombing that has allegedly killed several U.S. soldiers...not a word on CNN. Filtering, to avoid using the less diplomatic term of censorship is never a good sign. Is this still the land of Freedom or does the Country really needs a new leadership and direction ?
