CHIP CHIRIMBES

Chip’s Free MLB WINNER
Baltimore vs. Chi Cubs, 08/22/2014 14:20
Money Line: +101 Chi Cubs
Cubs over Orioles- The Orioles have won four straight and visit Chicago for this inter-league contest as they start 23-year-old Kevin Gausman (7-4, 3.70 ERA) who has never faced the Cubs. Chicago will start their most effective starter in Jake Arrieta (6-4, 2.61) who once registered 10 wins with Baltimore.
This time it’s the CUBS!

NEWSLETTER Major League Baseball Prediction From Doc’s Sports

Take ‘Over’ 8.5 – San Diego at Arizona (9:40 p.m., Friday, Aug. 22)
We should see runs aplenty in Friday night’s matchup in Arizona. First and foremost, we have two starting pitchers that are overrated in my book. Odrisamer Despaigne comes in with a 3.28 ERA, but that’s extremely deceiving. First of all, half of his starts have been in pitcher-friendly Petco Park in San Diego. But even beyond that, Despaigne has a horrid 37-23 K/BB ratio and he’s been fortunate with a low BABIP of .269 thus far. As a result, we’re going to see Despaigne getting knocked around a little bit before this season ends. Chase Field is much less forgiving for pitchers, so there’s a good chance he gets roughed up a little bit tonight. For the Diamondbacks, right-hander Josh Collmenter toes the rubber. His numbers aren’t terrible, but a 4.31 ERA and 1.30 WHIP are certainly nothing to get excited about. He did work out of the bullpen a little bit and that generally is much easier work than facing hitters multiple times in the same game. I’ve never liked Collmenter’s stuff very much as he doesn’t throw hard and relies too much on deceiving hitters and hitting the corners of the plate. He was able to get by like that over the first few years of his career, but hitters are finally catching up with him. The Padres have been swinging the bats better than anyone else in the NL since the All-Star break, so no reason for that to end tonight. This one has all the makings of a slugfest, so we’ll sit back and tally the runs as they cross the plate. Take the over here.

NEWSLETTER NFL Preseason Prediction From Jason Sharpe

Take #254 Detroit (-3) over Jacksonville (7:30 p.m., Friday, Aug. 22)
The Detroit Lions love to impress their loyal fan base and they will usually try to do so by putting on a good show when at home in the preseason. Look no further than the fact the Lions are 12-1 in their last 13 preseason home contests. Not only do the Lions usually win these meaningless contests but will do so in very strong fashion usually as their winning margin has been by an average of 12 points per victory during this stretch.

Last year the Lions won their Week 3 preseason game at home by a 40-9 score. The one before that was a 34-10 home win in the week three preseason home game back in 2011. In 2010 the Lions also played at home in week three and scored 35 points in that game as well meaning the last three times in this spot they’ve averaged 36 points per game and scored 34 or more points in each one. This is obviously a franchise looking to entertain their fan base here in what is considered by many the so called “dress rehearsal” contest for NFL teams.

Jacksonville is a team in rebuilding mode. The Jaguars went 4-12 last year in what was head coach Gus Bradley’s first season. The goal right now for the Jaguars is to try and restore some pride and excitement back into what was not only a very bad but also boring football team last year. The Jaguars scored the fewest points in the NFL last season and because of that they made it a point to go out and take the first quarterback in this year’s 2014 NFL draft by grabbing Blake Bortles. Developing Bortles seems to be priority number one for them this preseason as Bradley stated he will let Bortles play with the first team this week against Detroit despite the fact he will not be their opening day starter. A move like this proves that is that Jacksonville is concerned more about Bortles getting some quality playing time over them winning this meaningless game here. Take Detroit minus the points

NEWSLETTER NFL Preseason Prediction From Robert Ferringo

Take ‘Under’ 45.5 - Carolina at New England (7:30 p.m., Friday, Aug. 22)
There is just never any telling what Bill Belichick is going to do with his starters in the preseason. He could play Tom Brady for an entire game. He could play him one series. He could not play him at all. With a fierce Carolina pass rush on tap this week I think that Belichick will protect his star player. Also, the Patriots offense got a lot of work in last week against the run-run-run Philadelphia system. The Panthers defense looked really good last week against Kansas City and I expect the Panthers to play full bore in this game. Carolina knows what it is: a team that runs the ball and plays great defense. They aren’t going to find the going too easy against an improved Patriots defense. But I also don’t see Carolina trying to get too creative to score points in this one. The Panthers have gone ‘over’ in both of their preseason games this year. But I don’t see that trend continuing. They are 1-3 against the total in Weeks 3 and 4 the last two years and I think that this one will go ‘under’.

Your Friday freebie is the Under in the White Sox-Yankees meeting in the Bronx.

Even though John Danks has a season ERA near 5, it is doubtful to me that New York's feeble offense will be able to come up with enough runs to get this game Over the total.

New York has not scored more than 4 runs in a game since August 8th, and have gone 11-3-1 Under the total their last 15 games overall.

The Yankees will send Shane Greene to the mound, and the lanky righty has been very strong in the rotation for Joe Girardi this season, going 3-1 since July when he stepped into the rotation, with a 2.91 ERA.

The Under is 5-1-1 when Greene starts, and I will side with the trends that say to play the Under in the Bronx here on Friday night.

Pale Hose-Yanks stay Low.

BRYAN POWER

1* St. Louis (7:05 ET):

Winners of four straight, the Cardinals are going for broke here w/ a pitching change from Shelby Miller to Adam Wainwright. They just swept Cincinnati at home and have won 7 of 8. That win streak has them occupying the top Wild Card spot in the National League as they get set to open a series w/ the last place Phillies...
Though he has not been as effective in August, there is no denying that Wainwright gives St. Louis a great shot at winning every time out. He is tied for the MLB lead in wins w/ 15. He has also been effective in the past versus Philadelphia w/ a 5-1 record and 2.32 ERA in nine starts. He's won 3 straight against them, including back in June where he allowed just 1 ER in 8 IP. He is 2-0 all-time at Citizens Bank Park w/ a 1.64 ERA. For the season, he ranks 3rd in the National League in both ERA and innings pitched.
I just don't buy into this Phillies organization and I have no idea why they didn't turn into sellers at the trade deadline. At 56-71, they're not going anywhere this season and I don't see this as a team that's exactly built for the future. Going w/ Kyle Kendrick tonight probably isn't the best answer for Wainwright as Philly's starter has a 6.80 ERA over his L8 starts. A Cardinals lineup that's batted a collective .338 during a four-game win streak should be able to jump on Kendrick early as he has a 9.00 1st inning ERA, the highest among all qualifying starters

Play - Milwaukee w/Gallardo.

Edges - Brewers: Gallardo 13-1 last fourteen team starts during August, and 11-2 home career team starts in this series, and 26 strikeouts and 6 walks last six starts. Pirates: Locke 0-4 last four away team starts and 0-2 last two teams starts in this series.
With Pittsburgh 3-11 the last fourteen games in this series, we recommend a 1-unit play on Milwaukee.

BRAD WILTON

Former Baltimore pitcher Jake Arrieta will make his first start against his old club, and with a chip on his shoulder, and a 6-4 mark with a lowly 2.61 ERA you can bet that the first place Orioles will have their hands full in this matinee from Wrigley.

I still with side with the O's, as Chicago had a rather long rain-slogged day at the park yesterday when the played San Francisco.

The Cubbies have lost 5 of their last 8 overall, while the high-flying O's come into the Friendly Confines having won their last 4, and 6 of their last 8 overall.

Kevin Gausman will go for Baltimore, and he has turned in a 3-1 mark with a 3.23 ERA his last 5 trips to the hill.

At the end of the day, Baltimore is just the better team, and this price is dirt cheap when you consider that fact.

Take the Orioles.

SARATOGA – 8/22/14

Race 1-

1ST #6 TWIN ENGINE

2ND #5 DOUBLEDOWN AGAIN

3RD #4 MOMENTS NOTIZ

#6 TWIN ENGINE rallied nicely to snag the show dough last time out at 26-1. He will get some pace to run at this afternoon and has been on the improve of late. This barn has struggled at this meet and that’s not something that can be said for the vast majority of this field. Any lingering moisture in this surface will not hurt this son of Mr. Greeley. #5 DOUBLEDOWN AGAIN goes first off a claim by Gary Contessa for the potent Winning Move Stable. He has shown increased speed of late when 2nd in three straight outings, and that speed will help him this afternoon. He can revert to the tactics that worked best for him in the past today, and that’s to lay back and make one run. #4 MOMENTS NOTIZ is the one to catch today as he goes 2nd off a layoff and returns from a trip to Delaware. He had a strong winter down at Aqueduct and loves wet surfaces, so there’s plenty to like today. Should he get clear under the hot-riding Irad Ortiz, Jr., his chances will improve.

Race 2-

1st #8 KNOW IT ALL ANNA

2ND #2 ZARLEEZA

3RD #7 NEJMA

#8 KNOW IT ALL ANNA drops in class for trainer Rudy Rodriguez and has drawn a cozy outside post position. This barn has already hit twice with 2YOs in maiden claimers at the Spa, and this filly showed some life last time out when she made a middle move after stumbling at the start. With a cleaner beginning and the addition of blinkers, she will be much more involved in the opening stages. #2 ZARLEEZA is a 2nd timer by Harlan’s Holiday and is out of a stakes winning dirt sprinter. This filly debuted at Monmouth and made a decent late move on the slop that day, so there’s something to build on for the future. Trainer Todd Pletcher is 7 for his last 12 with 2YO 2nd timers dropping in for tags on the Spa main track ($2.10 ROI). #7 NEJMA found trouble on debut when she broke slowly before making a minor late move. She is kin to three winners and came back to work well after her debut, so an improved run is expected.

Race 3-

1st #3 BAHAMIAN SQUALL

2ND #1 ROYAL CURRIER

3RD #2 TRAFFIC LIGHT

#3 BAHAMIAN SQUALL drops in class after falling apart late in the Vanderbilt earlier this month. He has had success here in the past and will be in position to capitalize on the fast pace that figures to develop in the opening stages. If he can bounce back to some of his better efforts today, he’ll be a prime win candidate. You’ll also get a fair price based on the poor running line from the Vanderbilt. #1 ROYAL CURRIER went back to what he does best in his last start when he wired the field in an optional claimer at Delaware. He is undoubtedly fast enough to get control of this race from the opening bell, and some of his best sprint races are good enough to win this thing. His stablemate, #1A CANDYMAN E is an off the pace threat who won a graded stake earlier this year for trainer David Jacobson. #2 TRAFFIC LIGHT ships in for trainer Alfredo Velazquez, who has run only three horses in NY over the last five years. He is drawn poorly on the inside, but has a great deal of speed and entered the Don Levine Memorial in late June off a big win at Monmouth two weeks before. Thus, he has good recent form and will be in position from the outset.

Race 4-

1st #3 JUDY LEGEND

2ND #4 VIA STRATA

3RD #1 RUNNING WILD

#3 JUDY LEGEND goes 2nd off a lengthy layoff and ran a bang-up race last time out from the inside post. She was close to the strong early pace that afternoon before tiring late, and now gets blinkers added for high percentage trainer Graham Motion. The fact that she showed much more speed last time out is a positive sign and the shades will sharpen her early today. #4 VIA STRATA has worked very well for trainer Kiaran McLaughlin according to the DRF clockers. This filly is by 9% debut sire Street Cry and is out of a Grade III winning mare. This barn won with a firster on Thursday and this is hardly the toughest field of MSW runners you’ll find at the Spa. #1 RUNNING WILD goes 2nd off a layoff as well and ran a credible race in her 2014 debut. This daughter of Indian Charlie rallied well to finish third and can be a bit more alert in the early stages this afternoon.

Race 5-

1st #4 CIGAR STREET

2ND #5 PICK OF THE LITTER

3RD #7 BAD HOMBRE

#4 CIGAR STREET is a Grade III winner who is returning from a 17 month layoff for trainer Bill Mott. He is 7 for his last 27 with all starters coming off of 365+ day breaks, good for a $3.38 ROI and this 5YO is working well for his Hall of Fame trainer. He is 3-3 for Mott after returning from a layoff late in 2012. The versatility he’s shown is an important weapon and will enable him to either take control from the start or rate just off the early pace. #5 PICK OF THE LITTER went wide while chasing a sluggish early pace in the Monmouth Cup last time out. He is proven at this N3X level and should get a decent pace to run at in the late stages of this affair. While his trainer has struggled mightily at this meet, this son of Kitten’s Joy will offer value and is in good form. #7 BAD HOMBRE made a bold middle move to contest the pace before tiring in his last start. He was returning quickly that afternoon after clearing the N2X condition downstate, and now gets the rider back who piloted him at Belmont. He is an off the pace type who’ll benefit if he gets a patient ride from Junior Alvarado.

Race 6-

1st #12 SUCCESFUL BROTHERS

2ND #2 COSMIC COINCIDENCE

3RD #5 HONOR THE KITTEN

#12 SUCCESFUL BROTHERS goes 2nd off a claim for trainer Gary Contessa after finding trouble in crunch time of his last outing. He faced open 35k sellers that afternoon and now returns to the conditioned claiming ranks. The outside post is no bargain, but the combination of the class relief he gets as well as his ability to stay close from the outset makes him a threat at a price. #2 COSMIC COINCIDENCE was claimed on Monday by trainer Gary Gullo and now returns quickly. This colt has turf pedigree in his 2nd family and the inside post should facilitate a ground-saving and forwardly placed trip. If he can sneak away, he’ll prove tough to catch in the late stages. #5 HONOR THE KITTEN was claimed for 40k last time out and now drops in class for new trainer Jimmy Klesaris. He came up short after going wide in his most recent start and this barn is sure to break through in due time. DIRT: 12-10-1

Race 7-

1ST #1 GAP YEAR

2ND #3 PAULASSILVERLINING

3RD #8 STORMY SKY

#1 GAP YEAR is by Bernardini, a 13% sire and is training very well for Kiaran McLaughlin. This filly is out of a mare who was a Grade I winning sprinter, and she has dropped one other winner. His dam, Dubai Escapade, is also kin to Grade I winner Madcap Escapade and this barn hit with a 2YO firster here yesterday. The fact that Joel Rosario is in the irons is a positive sign. #3 PAULASSILVERLINING showed speed on a wet track in her debut when she set the pace before tiring late. She ran into an impressive winner that afternoon and now faces what looks to be a softer field today. This well-bred filly is kin to Grade I winner Dads Caps and has a great deal of upside for a barn that has had a solid meet. #8 STORMY SKY is by 17% debut sire Sky Mesa and is out of a dam who was a winner on synthetics. She is kin to multiple dirt winners including the stakes winning router Don Dulce. This barn has had two winners at the meet with debuting juveniles.

Race 8-

1ST #6 CRUSHING

2ND #4 SINISTRA

3RD #2 MR VIBER

If there is still a great deal of moisture in this surface, Chad Brown is likely to scratch #6 CRUSHING. He is 0-5 in his career over wet surfaces, but has done excellent work on fast strips. His last start at Delaware was ruined when he was given an overly aggressive ride by Trevor McCarthy, as he wound up chasing a white hot pace before tiring late. The runner-up in that affair was GIII Iselin winner Balance of Power, which speaks to the quality of that field. #4 SINISTRA was up in time to take the Evan Shipman last time out for Karl Grusmark and now gets a rider change to Joel Rosario. He showed good tactical speed in that victory before pouncing when ready and he can race forwardly once again today. The likelihood of a wet track also helps his cause. #2 MR VIBER raced close to a very strong pace last time out and stayed on well to take a N1X at Monmouth. That was a much weaker race than this event, but trainer Todd Pletcher is 32% with dirt starters coming off of wins and returning from 45-75 day breaks ($2.17 ROI). He is bred to absolutely love wet tracks as well.

Race 9-

1ST #6 CLOSE HATCHES

2ND #7 PRINCESS OF SYLMAR

3RD #2 STANWYCK

Whether this race is run over a wet or dry track, #6 CLOSE HATCHES is the one to beat. She is 3-3 on the year and scored a stirring victory last time out in the Ogden Phipps on the Belmont Stakes undercard. Jockey Joel Rosario kept her in a comfortable spot early and she pounced when ready around the far turn. That required her to prolong the bold move she made on the sweeping far turn, which is never an easy task. There’s other speed signed up in here, which should prompt regular rider Joel Rosario to put her in a comfortable spot rating in the opening stages. #7 PRINCESS OF SYLMAR has dropped her last two and will now be outfitted with blinkers by trainer Todd Pletcher. She was a below average 2nd in the Delaware Handicap last time out and has not shown the same stretch punch in her last two that we grew accustomed to seeing from her in 2013. This has been her favorite surface thus far and she figures to get a contested pace to run at in the late stages. #2 STANWYCK had more go against her in the Shuvee than did #1 ANTIPATHY, who eventually reached the winner’s circle. Stanwyck was wide and off the pace over a wet surface that played kindly to speed. Should she be able to take back and make one run in this affair, she is the likeliest upsetter in this bunch.

Race 10-

1ST #2 MOP HEAD

2ND #4 FILM SHOT

3RD #6 MEDIA KID

#2 MOP HEAD has endured a pair of troubled trips in his last two turf starts and now draws a cozy inside post. He was away from the gate slowly last time out before attempting to rally into the moderate pace set by eventual wire-to-wire winner Shining Copper. Two back he was stuck behind a wall of horses before angling out and finishing well under today’s pilot. You’ll get value here for a barn that has quietly had a productive stand. #4 FILM SHOT is an accomplished veteran who now stretches out in distance for trainer David Carroll. He showed a great deal of speed last time out going a trip that’s far short of his best, and he returns to routing today. That should prompt him to show some speed in the opening stages, and he has a great deal of back class to draw from today. #6 MEDIA KID had no real excuse when beaten two starts back as the 3-2 favorite. He gets back to his preferred surface today and will be within range from the opening bell. He has improved steadily for trainer Tom Morley since being claimed and will be re-united today with the pilot who won aboard him in April. DIRT: 9-5-6

Race 11-

1st #1 SMOKEY BROWN

2ND #3 ARIPEKA

3RD #8 PECORINO

#1 SMOKEY BROWN gets a huge rider change after falling too far behind a moderate pace in his last start. He wound up making a decent late move after racing very wide on the course that afternoon and continued a string of strong performances on the weeds. This son of Big Brown has not been terribly fond of winning, but now has the meet’s leading pilot and a cozy inside draw. #3 ARIPEKA had no real excuse when beaten last time out as the favorite and now bids to break through 2nd off a lengthy layoff. Trainer Eddie Kenneally is having a terrible meet, but this gelding likely needed a race when last seen and should get another ideal trip just off the pacesetters. #8 PECORINO is by Afleet Alex, a productive turf sire and is out of a dam who is kin to turf winners Big Booster and Unbridled Essence. Trainer Linda Rice is 16% with runners going first off of claims and trying turf for the first time, good for a $2.00 ROI and this gelding should be loose early. DIRT: 8-11-7
