Dodgers' SS Hanley Ramirez, questionable Friday

Ramirez has missed three straight game because of an irritated right shoulder. He is questionable for Friday against the Diamondbacks.

Yanks' Ellsbury (hip) expects to play Friday

The New York Yankees' first three-game series sweep of the season came with a touch of pain Thursday night.

Center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury, who extended his hitting streak to 16 games with a two-run homer in the first inning, experienced a flare-up in his sore right hip before coming out of the game after 6 1/2 innings. Both Ellsbury and manager Joe Girardi said after the game that the injury was minor and that Ellsbury should be back on the field Friday at Oakland, but the aggravation of the injury is a bit concerning.

Ellsbury hurt his hip last Sunday and was not expected to be in the lineup for Monday game's at Kansas City. A rainout postponed that contest.

He played all of the first 24 innings of the Seattle series but couldn't finish Thursday's game. Ellsbury said that he aggravated the injury while making a catch against the wall in the fifth inning, and then he felt the hip tighten up while batting in the top of the sixth.

"It's tight," he said Thursday after the Yankees' 6-3 win over Seattle, "but I expect to be out there (Friday)."

Girardi said that Ellsbury didn't want to come out of the game but that the team was being cautious with him. The Yankees led 6-2 when Ichiro Suzuki replaced Ellsbury in the bottom of the seventh inning.

"We think he'll be able to play for us (Friday), but we'll see," Girardi said.

Pirates, Marlins like keeping scorelines low

Despite being a great Over club this season, the Miami Marlins are in the habit of keeping ball games low-scoring when they play the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Marlins host the Pirates for a three-game set which opens Friday and if recent trends suggest anything, then the Under could be in the cards.

The Under is 20-6-1 in the last 27 meetings by the two National League clubs and is 8-3 in the last 11 games in Miami.

Scheduled starters in the series are Jeff Locke for the Bucs and Nathan Eovaldi for the Marlins.

Line move for Game 5 of Cup Final you need to know

The puck drops on Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals Friday night at the Staples center in Los Angeles and the line moves continue to indicate bettors are thinking the Kings will end the series tonight.

The Kings, who lead the New York Rangers 3-1, have moved to -171 favorites to hoist the Stanley Cup above their heads Friday night.

Los Angeles opened at -163 Thursday and were quickly bet down to -155, but since then the line has steadily moved towards the Kings. The Kings were bet to -171 early Friday morning.

Thursday was a good night to back home teams

Whether it was home favorites or home underdogs, Thursday night was a good night to back home teams against the runline.

Teams who enjoyed home cooking went 8-3 against the runline in the majors last night, good for a success rate of almost 73 percent.

Home favorites went 5-2, hitting at a mark of over 71 percent while home dogs went 3-1, coming in at an even better 75 percent.

Home teams have struggled against the runline this season, winning just 43 percent of the time.

Preview: Rangers (32-34) at Mariners (34-32)

Game: 1
Venue: Safeco Field
Date: June 13, 2014 10:10 PM EDT

Coming off one of the most dominant performances of his career, the Seattle Mariners' Felix Hernandez is on quite a roll.

While he hasn't had much success against the Texas Rangers, Hernandez may be able to break through in Friday night's series opener at Safeco Field.

Hernandez (8-1, 2.39 ERA) has gone 5-0 with a 1.99 ERA over a six-start stretch while striking out 53 and walking five over 45 1-3 innings. The former AL Cy Young Award winner struck out a career-high 15 over seven innings of four-hit ball in Sunday's 5-0 win at Tampa Bay, becoming the first pitcher since Jake Peavy in 2007 to record at least 15 strikeouts without receiving a decision.

"Everything (was working)," he told MLB's official website. "I was throwing a lot of strikes. My changeup was unbelievable and the slider was really good, too. I was getting ahead early and that was it. It's fun when you've got all that stuff. It's fun to go out there and just throw every pitch and know it's going to be for strikes."

Hernandez has also gone without a decision in two starts against Texas this season despite a 2.77 ERA. The right-hander, 0-4 with a 6.02 ERA in seven outings against the Rangers since last year, is 12-20 with a 4.11 ERA in the series for his most losses against any team.

The Rangers (32-34) avoided a season-worst fifth consecutive defeat with a 6-0 victory over Miami on Wednesday. Shin-Soo Choo went 2 for 4 with a season-high four RBIs and Yu Darvish recorded his first career complete game.

Despite the victory, fourth-place Texas is eight games behind Oakland for the AL West lead. The Rangers' 44 homers are third-fewest in baseball, and they have a major league-leading 14 players on the DL.

"At some point, we've got to start getting blessed by the baseball gods," manager Ron Washington said. "But we have to make that happen. ... You've got to pull yourself out of your misery."

Texas gives the ball to Nick Tepesch (2-2, 4.91), who has posted a 9.82 ERA in losing back-to-back starts. The right-hander yielded four runs, eight hits and a career worst-tying four walks over 5 1-3 innings in Saturday's 8-3 defeat to Cleveland.

Tepesch gave up three runs over 6 1-3 innings to beat the Mariners 4-3 on May 21, improving to 1-1 with a 4.19 ERA in four starts in the series. This marks his first appearance opposite Hernandez.

"I don't really look at who I'm pitching against. I'm pitching against the Mariners, I'm not pitching against Felix Hernandez, in a sense," he said. "I'm facing their hitters. I don't have to face Felix. He's got to do his thing, and I've got to do my thing."

Kyle Seager is 5 for 10 with three doubles against Tepesch, and Robinson Cano is 2 for 3 with a homer and a double.

Seattle (34-32) had won eight of nine before getting swept by the New York Yankees. The Mariners were limited to seven runs in the three games, falling 6-3 in Thursday's finale.

Seager is mired in a 4-for-37 slump, and Mike Zunino is 2 for his last 18 with 10 strikeouts.

The Mariners recalled former top prospect Jesus Montero on Thursday for his first major league stint since a 50-game suspension for his role in baseball's Biogenesis performance-enhancing drug investigation. He was hitting .270 with eight homers, 15 doubles and 40 RBIs in 59 games at Triple-A Tacoma.

(903) PITTSBURGH PIRATES (904) MIAMI MARLINS

Take: (904) MIAMI MARLINS -125

The Pirates head to Miami with some positive momentum. The Bucs finally called up Gregory Polanco, 2013 MVP Andrew McCutchen is a major roll, and there seems to be more energy on this team than I’d been seeing previously this season. The Pirates are still a couple of games under .500, but they’re also just 2.5 games out of the wild card race, so things are not as bad as they could have been for the Bucs with their disappointing start to the season.

The stunner is that we’re 65 games into the season and if the campaign ended today, the Marlins would be selling playoff tickets. I thought this team would be somewhat improved this season, but I’d be lying through my teeth if I said I expected them to be playing at this level. What’s even more impressive is that they’re hanging in pretty well in spite of the devastating loss of Cy Young candidate Jose Fernandez.

The Marlins have been stellar at home all season, and they’ve also got some momentum following a decent road trip. Miami also should be refreshed thanks to some peculiar scheduling that allowed them days off on both Monday and Thursday this week. And they’ll have their ace on the hill tonight as they open the set with the Pirates.

Nathan Eovaldi has taken a major step forward this season. Eolvaldi is a true flamethrower, but prior to this year, he was mostly a big heater with not a whole lot more. That’s not the case anymore. Eovaldi is still going to feature the four-seam rocket, but his slider has really developed nicely and in the process, he’s turned himself into a legit commodity with a genuine chance at becoming an ace. Eovaldi is not quite there yet, but it’s also clear he hasn’t reached his ceiling yet. Eovaldi has been outstanding at home, and there’s nothing fluky about that nifty 2.49 ERA he’s sporting when pitching in his friendly confines.

Jeff Locke was terrific last weekend in a hard luck loss to the Brewers. I think it was probably the best game I’ve seen Locke pitch. But I’m not banking on him repeating the performance here. Consistency has not been a forte for Locke, and he’s still going to have to prove to me he’s anything more than rotation filler.

Locke will certainly have his work cut out tonight. Not only is he facing the ace of the current Miami staff, he’ll also be up against a Marlins offense that has put some startling numbers at home. Giancarlo Stanton is having a great season and is a legitimate MVP candidate. Casey McGehee has been a huge surprise in his return to the majors, and two kids, Christian Yelich and Marcell Ozuna, could each be emerging stars.

I see Eovaldi with a definite edge over Locke and while the Pirates offense is looking better, Miami at home has been a big run producer. I’ll give the late inning edge to Pittsburgh with that rock solid pen, but it’s not like the hosts are bad in that regard. I made Miami a slightly bigger favorite than where they’re currently priced, particularly with Neil Walker sidelined for the Bucs and the scheduling dynamics favoring the home team. Look for the Marlins to get the series opener tonight.

MLB Comp Pick for Friday June 13, 2014: 8:10 PM

MLB (923) TAMPA BAY RAYS VS (924) HOUSTON ASTROS

Take: (924) HOUSTON ASTROS

Reason: Your free pick for Friday, June 13th, 2014, comes in baseball as the Rays and the Astros meet in Houston. Tampa Bay is a mess, especially on the road, while Houston has a winning home mark but is a dog here. Tampa Bay's offense is 27th in baseball in runs scored, 26th in slugging. The Rays are 8-20 in their last 28 road games and 2-10 against a right-handed starter. Alex Cobb is 1-4 with a 4.39 ERA and the team is 0-3 his last three starts. Cobb allowed seven runs on 10 hits in just 4.1 innings of work against the Mariners on Saturday to fall to take the loss. Cobb threw a lot of strikes in this one, but the Mariners feasted on both his fastball and changeup. That is three straight clunkers for Cobb, despite a 14:4 K:BB over his last 15.1 innings of work. The Astros are 10-4 in their last 14 games vs. a right-handed starter. Starter Collin McHugh (4-3, 2.82 ERA) has been sharp, allowing just 37 hits in 54 innings, with 19 walks and 60 Ks. Play the Astros!

Cleveland Indians at Boston Red Sox

Boston Red Sox

The Indians and Red Sox meet at Fenway Park in Boston Friday evening in the opener of this three-game series where John Lackey matches serves with Justin Masterson. Lackey, who toes the slab in sharp KW form with 17 K's and 3 walks in his last three starts, is 13-6 his last nineteen home team-starts, and 6-2 his last eight games here during the month of June. Meanwhile, Masterson has dropped 3 of his last 4 starts against his former mates and is 4-11 away in his career team-starts during June. Too many numbers to ignore here, and we won't. We recommend a 1-unit play on Boston.
