Last teams standing: Jays, Indians primed for Game 1
By Jim Ingraham, The Sports Xchange

Game: 1
Venue: Progressive Field
Date: October 14, 2016 8:08 PM EDT

CLEVELAND -- The last two teams standing in the American League overcame plenty of obstacles to reach the AL Championship Series, but the Toronto Blue Jays and Cleveland Indians are both playing as well now as they have all season.
"Two good teams. Two hot teams. It should be a good matchup," said Toronto manager John Gibbons.
The two teams who will meet in Game 1 of the ALCS on Friday night at Progressive Field have not yet tasted defeat in the postseason. In the two division series, Cleveland swept Boston in three games and Toronto swept Texas in three games.
"It was a battle to get in, but we've been swinging it well in the last week," said Gibbons, whose team had a losing record (11-16) in September, and needed a walk-off home run in the 11th inning to beat Baltimore in the wildcard game.
Cleveland's 16-11 September record was the reverse of Toronto's, but the Indians' hardships came during the regular season. Their best hitter, Michael Brantley, missed virtually the entire season with a shoulder injury. Starting catcher Yan Gomes missed 2 1/2 months with a separated shoulder, and the Nos. 2 and 3 starters in their rotation, Carlos Carrasco and Danny Salazar, suffered season-ending injuries in September.
"They took a couple of big blows, a couple of big injuries, and they just kept on trucking," Gibbons said.
"Losing two starters like that late is tough, but I think we have enough good players to win. We've just got to play good baseball," Indians manager Terry Francona said.
The Indians, however, still have their No.1 starter, Corey Kluber, rested and ready to start Game 1. Kluber, a Cy Young Award candidate, was 18-9 with a 3.14 ERA in the regular season. He pitched seven scoreless innings on three hits in a 6-0 win over the Red Sox in Game 2 of the Division Series.
"We expect him to be good and stingy," said Gibbons. "You never enjoy facing him, that's for sure."
Kluber has struggled in his career vs. Toronto. In one start against the Blue Jays this year he gave up five runs in 3 1/3 innings in what became a 17-1 loss. In five career starts against the Blue Jays Kluber is 1-3 with a 5.34 ERA.
Gibbons has no explanation for his team's success against Kluber. "There's a lot of things that happen in this game that you don't know why," he said.
Marco Estrada, Toronto's Game 1 starter, was 9-9 with a 3.48 ERA in the regular season, but he came up big in Game 1 of the Division Series vs. Texas. Estrada allowed one run on four hits in 8 1/3 innings in a 10-1 Blue Jays victory. In one start against Cleveland this year Estrada got the win in a 9-6 Toronto victory, pitching five innings and allowing three runs on four hits.
Estrada said he's hopeful the Blue Jays can use the momentum they gained during the sweep of Texas in the Division Series to good advantage in the ALCS.
"It's all about timing. That's usually the way it works," he said. "The best team doesn't always win, but I think the hottest team is usually the one that takes it all."
Francona knows his pitching staff faces a big challenge in trying to control Toronto's power-packed lineup.
"You don't run down the hall to face their hitters," Francona said.
"They have a solid lineup, one through nine," said Kluber. "They are all good hitters, with a lot of power, but they're also patient. So you've got to execute your pitches. There is no magic formula.

ALCS - Game 1 Preview

Toronto Blue Jays (93-73, 45-38 away) vs. Cleveland Indians (97-67, 55-28 home)

Game 1 Odds: Indians -135, Blue Jays +125, 7 ½
Series Odds: Blue Jays -145, Indians +125

How they got here

Toronto is back in the American League Championship Series for the second straight season, but the Blue Jays needed to win the Wild Card game this time around. The Jays outlasted the Orioles on a three-run walk-off home run from Edwin Encarnacion to advance to the American League Divisional Series. Toronto swept Texas in three games, including a pair of victories in Arlington in the first two contests. The Jays plated 22 runs against the Rangers, while Encarnacion and Jose Bautista have combined to hit five homers in the playoffs.

Cleveland cruised to its first AL Central title since 2007, while the Indians continued that momentum by knocking out the favored Red Sox in a three-game sweep in the ALDS. The Indians limited the Red Sox to seven total runs in the series, including a 6-0 shutout behind Corey Kluber in Game 2 as a -115 home favorite. The double-play combination of shortstop Jose Ramirez and second baseman Jason Kipnis combined to hit 9-for-21 (.428) with five runs scored against Boston, while the Cleveland bullpen allowed just two earned runs in 10.1 innings of work.

ALCS history

The Blue Jays fell in six games of the ALCS last season to the eventual champion Royals. Toronto last won a World Series in 1993 in the memorable Joe Carter walk-off homer against Philadelphia as the Jays have claimed two of their previous three American League Championship series since 1992.

The Indians are playing in their first ALCS since falling to the Red Sox in seven games in 2007. Cleveland owned a commanding 3-1 series lead over Boston before the Red Sox rallied for three consecutive wins and eventually claiming the World Series title. The Tribe is seeking its first pennant since 1997, while trying to capture its first world championship since 1948.

2016 Head-to-Head Meetings (Indians won 4-3, Under 4-3)

Rogers Center (Toronto)
June 30 – Indians 4, Blue Jays 1 (CLE -120, Under 8 ½)
July 1 – Indians 2, Blue Jays 1 – 19 innings (CLE +125, Under 8 ½)
July 2 – Blue Jays 9, Indians 6 (TOR -160, Over 9)
July 3 – Blue Jays 17, Indians 1 (TOR +105, Over 8)

Progressive Field (Cleveland)
August 19 – Indians 3, Blue Jays 2 (CLE -135, Under 8 ½)
August 20 – Blue Jays 6, Indians 5 (TOR +110, Over 9)
August 21 – Indians 3, Blue Jays 2 (CLE -160, Under 7 ½)

There were several classic finishes between these two teams in the regular season. Cleveland outlasted Toronto in 19 innings at Rogers Center on July 1 as the Tribe bullpen tossed 13 scoreless innings. That victory was the 14th in a row for Cleveland before Toronto snapped that hot streak the next day in a 9-6 triumph.

Cleveland beat Toronto twice in its final at-bat at Progressive Field in mid-August as the Indians scored two runs in the ninth inning of a 3-2 victory in the series opener on a Tyler Naquin inside-the-park homer. In the Sunday matchup, the Indians scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth inning of another 3-2 triumph on a two-run homer by Ramirez.

Game 1 Starters

Toronto: Marco Estrada (10-9, 3.37 ERA)
Overall Team Record: 15-14
Overall (O/U) Record: 12-17
Road Record: 6-2
Road Team Record: 8-6
Road O/U Record: 6-8

Estrada dominated the Rangers in his only postseason start by tossing 8.1 innings and allowing four hits and one earned run in a 10-1 rout to open up the ALDS. The Toronto right-hander closed the season on fire by giving up a total of three earned runs in past four starts, while going at least seven innings three times. Estrada faced the Indians once this season at home, picking up a no-decision in a 9-6 win as he lasted five innings and gave up three earned runs. Toronto is 2-0 in Estrada’s two career starts against Cleveland, while the right-hander is pitching at Progressive Field for the first time in his career.

Cleveland: Corey Kluber (19-9, 3.04 ERA)
Overall Team Record: 20-12
Overall (O/U) Record: 16-14-2
Home Record: 10-5
Home Team Record: 11-5
Home O/U Record: 7-8-1

The 2014 Cy Young winner has been on fire since the end of July as the Indians have won 12 of his past 13 starts. Kluber dominated the Red Sox in Game 2 of the ALDS by scattering three hits in seven scoreless innings of a 6-0 shutout for his first career playoff victory. The Cleveland ace had two dramatically different results when facing the Blue Jays this season. In the first matchup at Rogers Center, the Jays tagged Kluber for five earned runs in 3.1 innings in a 17-1 drubbing of Cleveland. Kluber turned it around in his next meeting with Toronto on August 21 by yielding only two earned runs in 6.2 innings of a 3-2 win. Since 2014, the Indians own a 2-3 record against the Jays when Kluber starts, including a pair of losses at Progressive Field.

ALCS Game 1 MLB Betting Matchup & Odds
by Alan Matthews

ALCS: Blue Jays at Indians (-144, 8)

Game 1 of the ALCS is Friday at 8 p.m. ET and it's the first postseason meeting between these franchises. Did you know that of the five playoff teams still standing, the Jays are the ones with the most recent World Series title? That was way back in 1993. If you predicted these two to meet in the ALCS, major kudos. I actually thought Toronto would beat Texas, the team with the most wins in the American League. I certainly didn't expect the first Blue Jays playoff sweep ever. And I gave the Indians little chance to beat the Red Sox, the best offensive team in baseball, much less sweep them.

I do like the Jays to win this series even though they lost four of seven regular-season meetings with the Tribe. Toronto goes with All-Star right-hander Marco Estrada (9-9, 3.48) in the opener. Manager John Gibbons basically had everyone at his disposal since his team finished off the Rangers on Sunday. Estrada was fantastic in Game 1 of the ALDS in Texas, allowing one run and four hits over 8.1 innings with six strikeouts and no walks in the 10-1 victory. He's 3-1 with a 2.68 ERA in eight career postseason games, including four starts. Estrada took a no-decision at home vs. Cleveland on July 2, allowing three runs over five innings. Carlos Santana is 3-for-5 off him career with a homer.

The Indians haven't officially announced their starter yet, but it's obviously going to be Cy Young candidate Corey Kluber (18-9, 3.14). Kluber, the 2014 Cy Young winner, had his final start of the regular season skipped due to a mild quad strain and thus was pushed back to Game 2 of the ALDS vs. Boston. Kluber showed no signs of any trouble in shutting out the Red Sox on three hits over seven innings with seven strikeouts. Kluber was 0-1 with a 6.30 ERA in two starts this year against the Blue Jays. Russell Martin has two homers off him in 10 at-bats. Jose Bautista is 3-for-9 with four RBIs. Bautista didn't play vs. the Indians all this year due to injury.

Key trends: The Blue Jays are 6-0 in their past six vs. teams with a winning record. They are 9-3 in Estrada's past 12 on the road. The Indians are 12-2 in their past 14 home games vs. a right-handed starter. The under is 9-3 in Estrada's past 12 road starts vs. teams with a winning record. The under is 7-3 in the past 10 meetings.

Early lean: Blue Jays and under.

ALCS'

Toronto and Cleveland head into the ALCS ridding serious momentum. The Blue Jays sweeping their ALDS series vs Texas have won six consecutive platting 33 runs with the pitching staff surrendering 16 runs over the span. Tribe sweeping their series vs Red Sox also enter on a six game streak crossing 31 over home plate with its pitching staff giving up 14 runs.

In the best-of-seven opener at Progressive Field Friday, Marco Estrada toes the rubber for John Gibbons' crew. Estrada holding Texas to one run on four hits over 8 1/3 innings to earn the win in GM1 of the ALDS has been rock solid for Toronto in second season play. In three games last year, one this season the righty has tossed 27 2/3 innings allowing 6 runs on 18 hits, striking out 21 batters while walking just one. Estrada has a 2-0 career team start record vs Indians giving up 5 runs striking out 9, walking 1 batter over 12.0 innings all with Toronto.

Blue Jays have travelled well this season compiling a 45-38 record away from Rogers Center. Estrada had 15 starts in an opposing park going 7-2 with Jays 9-6 in those games.

On the other side, Terry Francona is handing starting duties to Corey Kluber. The right-hander off his first ever post season start, tossed a 7.0 inning gem blanking Red Sox in GM2 of the ALDS. Tribe's ace is undefeated in his last five assignments (5-0 TSR) and is 10-1 his last 13 trips to the mound (12-1 TSR). Kluber carries to the mound a 1-3 record vs Toronto with Cleveland 2-3 over his five career starts.

Tribe flourished in front of the home audience this season putting together a 55-28 record, the second best in the majors. Kluber a big part of that success went 11-5 in 17 starts with his team 12-5 over the span. Well to note, Cleveland has won 11 of Kluber's last 12 in front of the home crowd.

Cleveland's lofty status at home and having Kluber do their bidding, the betting odds opened with the Cleveland as a -$1.30 favorite.

Friday’s six-pack

— Dodgers 4, Nationals 3– Kershaw got last two outs to close game out, two days after he threw 110 pitches in Game 4. Thats why you pay the guy $31M a year. Break for Cubs, who won’t see Kershaw until Game 3 now.

— Florida visits LSU November 19 in a makeup game; Bayou Bengals go to Gainesville in both 2017 and 2018.

— In his great career, WR Larry Fitzgerald has caught TD passes from 13 different Cardinal QB’s.

— Since August 2014, half the 30 major league teams have hired a new chief baseball executive. Lot of impatient owners out there.

—* Thru five weeks in the NFL, no kickoffs have been run back for a TD; last time that happened was 1979.

— Open Court on NBA TV has some good discussions with both NBA coaches/GMs that were filmed in Las Vegas this summer. Good stuff.

— Big Sky conference has 12 hoop teams; 8 of the 12 teams have either 4 or 5 starters back from LY. Will that make it harder to win on the road?
