Play On: San Francisco w/Lincecum

Note: The Giants host the Rockies in the opener of a three-games series when former Cy Young winner Tim Lincecum takes the hill at AT&T Park in San Francisco tonight. Lincecum enters tonight game 10-4 in his home team starts this season, including 5-1 the last 6 starts. He's also 9-3 his last 12 team starts in August, including 6-1 his last 7 at home. With that we'll stay at home with Lincecum and the Giants here this evening.

Comp play winner on the Rams plus the points last night in the NFL to make it 26-10-1 our last 37 comp play selections.

For Friday night, we will back Cleveland to come through again at Baltimore.

The O's blew a sure win last night, as they are just 11-26 overall their last 37 games, and only 2-9 their last 11 games played at Camden Yards.

Cleveland has been some competitive ball down the stretch, and have now won 6 of their last 8 games overall.

Fausto Carmona hasn't done much this season, but his last start was brilliant, as the righty worked 7 full frames, while fanning 8, and surrendering just 1 run in a win over Seattle.

Let's look for him to build on that start with another quality effort on Friday.

His counterpart Jason Berken is just 3-11 with an ERA of 5.92 for the season, and probably should still be working on the minor league level to gain a little more confidence at this level.

Play on Cleveland.

Free MLB Pick from Robert Ferringo Take Boston (-1.5, -125) over Toronto (7 p.m., Friday, Aug. 28)
Josh Beckett got lit up by the Yankees in his last start so I don’t think that he’s going to be messing around on Friday. The Red Sox are a perfect 6-0 on the run line in Beckett’s next start following a game in which he pitched and the Sox lost. Beckett gave up seven runs in his last start against the Blue Jays last Tuesday. Again, I am looking for a big bounce back performance from one of the best in the game.

MLB Play - Friday, August 28th

CLEVELAND with Carmona (-110) over Baltimore at 7:00 PM EST

Counting last night's 5-4 victory at Baltimore, Cleveland has quietly won five of its last six. Don't be surprised when the Indians keep their good fortunes coming with another win tonight.

On the bump for the Tribe will be right hander Fausto Carmona. Since being called back up from the minors on July 31st, Carmona has pitched extremely well in five starts allowing nine earned runs and 30 hits in 29.0 innings of work. That breaks down to a respectable 2.79 ERA! It should be noted that those five performances came against some pretty good hitting teams in the Mariners, Angels, Rangers, Twins and Tigers.

Baltimore will counter with former Clemson Tiger Jason Berken. There's not much to like about this Green Bay product. At home this season, Berken has been slammed for 28 earned runs and 60 hits in 40.0 frames. That's bad enough for a dismal 1-6 overall record and a lofty 5.48 ERA. Even worse, with the moon shining, Jason has been off target surrendering 45 earned runs and 82 hits in 61.0 frames. That adds up to a woeful 2-7 mark and an elevated 6.64 ERA!

With Carmona on the mound, the Indians have dominated sub .500 opponents cashing 20 of their last 28 battles. Meanwhile, the O's have dropped 13 of their last 16 with Berken on the bump and 39 of their last 57 priced as an underdog. The Tribe is heating up while the Orioles are cooling off. Take Cleveland with listed pitcher Carmona. Thank you and best of luck, Tom Stryker.

Pittsburgh Pirates at Milwaukee Brewers

I'm playing the Over between the Pirates and Brewers on Friday night. The Bucs may not own strong numbers in road action against lefthanders, but southpaw Manny Parra should take care of that. Parra has been absolutely horrible over his last seven starts. He's allowed 30 earned runs and a whopping 80 base runners in 39 1/3 IP, for a 6.87 ERA and 2.04 WHIP. Zach Duke has had a strong season, but that's offset a bit by his serious struggles at Miller Park in his career, not to mention Milwaukee's propensity for hitting lefties. The Brewers plate 6 rpg in home night games against southpaws this season. I believe this total has been set too low, and I'm playing the Over between the Pirates and Brewers on Friday night. Good luck - Scott Spreitzer.

G-Man on a 27-21 comp play run the last 48 days.

For Friday night I look for the Giants to gain a little payback against a Colorado team that just took 3 of 4 off of them at Coors Field last weekend.

The Rockies are off back-to-back losses against West front-runner LA, and now must play by the bay where San Francisco is a solid 41-20 this year, including taking 2 of 3 from the Rocks earlier this season.

Ubaldo Jimenez just matched pitches - and won - against Tim Lincecum on the 23rd of this month, as Jimenez has now won 5 straight starts without allowing more than 2 runs to score in any of those wins. In fact, Jimenez is on a 6-0 roll his last 8 starts.

Still, the G-Man believes that the Giants will get to Ubaldo in this one, and back Linceum's cause.

Lincecum has done his best work this season at home, sporting a 7-1 mark with an ERA of just 1.98 along the way.

Make that 8-1 after the redemption win over the Rockies this Friday night.

Tonight's FREE winner comes from Philadelphia as I go with the Phillies at home to dominate the Braves tongiht.

The Phillies are certainly the play in this one as they return home after a seven-game road trip. Philadelphia has established itself as the favorite in the National League, having won 12 of their last 16, including three straight at home.

They lost Thursday in Pittsburgh, 3-2, but this team is absolutely rolling lately, on current streaks of 19-7 at home, 36-18 overall and 4-1 agaisnt teams from the N.L. East. On the opposite side, the Braves are just 2-8 in their last 10 series openers.

On the mound today for the Phillies is veteran Pedro Martinez (2-0, 5.14 ERA) making his fourth start in a Philadelphia uniform. The Phils are 3-0 in his first three outings, having beaten the Cubs, D'Backs and Mets. Sunday in New York, he allowed four runs in six innings but his offense got the job done, winning the game 9-7.

For the Braves, it's Tommy Hanson (9-2, 3.12) on the mound. They have lost three of his last four roadies, and really does a win in San Diego against that offense count? Atlanta lost two of three to the Padres to start this week and looked pretty bad in the two losses.

Philadelphia is establishing itself as the top dog in the N.L. Play the Phillies tonight to bang out some offense and get the job done.

Game: New England Patriots @ Washington Redskins

(257) New England Patriots -3.5

The Patriots have not been a good play the last couple of years in the pre season as they are only 1-5 straight up and against the spread since the start of last year. But the exception to this poor record has been week three when the starters play the majority of the game. Week three has seen the Patriots go 5-2 against the spread the last seven years. The Redskins are just 6-12 straight up and against the spread in their last 18 exhibition games, including 2-4 straight up and against the spread at home. In the week 3 dress rehearsal for the regular season the Skins are only 1-3 straight up and against the spread. Bill Belichick was not happy at all with his teams performance in their last preseason game in which they lost 7-6 to Cincinnati. According to Belichick there were plenty of mistakes. Far too many for his liking for a football team expected to be among the best in the league. He was unhappy and he let his players know it. Washington has really struggled on the offensive side of the ball so far this preseason. The Skins couldn't do anything against the Ravens and needed a trick play to get things going against the Steelers. I don't see them doing much here against the Pats. New England will be in a bad mood and come to play tonight. Lay the points with New England.

Cleveland Indians at Baltimore Orioles

The Baltimore Orioles are just 9-29 at home in the month of August over the past three seasons after blowing a save opportunity last night. Baltimore seems to fall apart in the second half of seasons and they face a Cleveland team that has nothing to lose and play like that. Indians’ starter Fausto Carmona is coming off his best start of the year and has a 16-4 TSR when Cleveland has won two or more straight games. Go with Cleveland here.

Complimentary Selection

Took a shot with the Padres as a huge underdog on Thursday and it didn’t pan out – oddly enough, San Diego was the only underdog that didn’t come through in MLB yesterday. Still, I’m on a 32-19 run with freebies, including 6-3 over the past nine days. For Friday, we’ll take a shot with another pup, backing the Pirates at Milwaukee.

That Milwaukee is actually favored in this game is pretty astonishing. The Brewers just got swept at home by the lowly Reds, all as a chalk, and they gave up 20 runs in the three defeats. Meanwhile, Pittsburgh just took two of three from the defending-champion Phillies, with the two wins coming in late-inning, come-from-behind fashion. The Pirates completed a nine-game homestand with a 7-2 record, starting with a three-game sweep of Milwaukee last week.

In fact, while Pittsburgh has won seven of nine, the Brewers have lost eight of 11, including six of nine at home (where Milwaukee is now under .500 for the season at 30-32). And since ripping off 17 consecutive wins over the Pirates, the Brewers have now lost five of the last six meetings (including the last four in a row).

As for this pitching matchup, you’ve got Pittsburgh lefty Zach Duke facing Milwaukee southpaw Manny Parra. Duke, who was the Pirates’ lone All-Star, has a 3.33 ERA and a 1.24 WHIP in 25 starts and a 2.91 ERA and a 1.20 WHIP in his last three outings. Parra is 8-10 with a 6.54 ERA overall and 1-2 with an 8.40 ERA in his last three (including a 5-2 loss at Pittsburgh 10 days ago).

So to summarize, you’ve got the hotter team (Pittsburgh) with the superior pitcher (Duke) and you’re giving me plus money to boot? Good enough for me!

Today's Complimentary Selection

Fausto Carmona (3-8, 5.92 ERA) has pitched well since being recalled from the minors by the Indians on July 31, but hasn't had much to show for it.

A 19-game winner in 2007, Carmona is just 1-2 despite a 2.79 ERA in five starts since his return to Cleveland's rotation. The right-hander did win his last outing, however, allowing one run and five hits with eight strikeouts in seven innings Sunday against Seattle.

Carmona went 2-0 with a 0.59 ERA against Baltimore in 2007, but was 0-1 with a 10.80 ERA in two games vs. the Orioles last year.

Baltimore starter Jason Berken (3-11, 6.49) won his last start, allowing two runs and five hits in 5 2/3 innings Sunday at Chicago, but he has been getting shelled on a regular basis.

The rookie right-hander won at home in his major league debut on May 26, but he is 0-6 at Camden Yards in eight starts since then. Overall at home, he is 1-6 with a 5.48 ERA in nine outings.

The Orioles have lost nine of their last 11 home games, and are 12-28 overall since the All-Star break. The Indians, on the other hand, are surging, having won five of their last six to improve to 20-12 since July 23, including a come-from-behind 5-4 victory over the Orioles on Thursday, when Andy Marte hit a two-run homer with two outs in the ninth.

Cleveland is 4-1 in Carmona's last five road starts, while Baltimore is 0-5 in Berken's last five home starts. These are two teams and two pitchers going in opposite directions. Take the Indians in this one.

3♦ CLEVELAND (on a 1♦ to 5♦ Scale)
