Game: St Louis Cardinals at San Diego Padres

Prediction: under

Reason: St. Louis is 11-5 UNDER vs. NL West teams and they are 5-1-2 UNDER vs. a starter with a WHIP of over 1.30. The Cardinals are 15-6-3 UNDER their last 24 games as favorites and they are 11-4 UNDER in the last 15 starts made by Kyle Lohse after allowing 2 or less runs in their last game. San Diego starter Clayton Richard has allowed just 8 runs total in his 3 starts with the Padres. San Diego is 4-1 UNDER when the Total is 7.0 to 8.5. The Padres are 6-2-1 UNDER at home vs. the Cardinals. PLAY ON 'UNDER' (Richard vs. Lohse)

Hard to believe I’d back the Sox in this one, but it might also be hard to believe the Eagles lost last night to a starter-deprived Colts team and that Chad Ochocino would kick an extra point. But, anything’s possible.

And with this one in Beantown, I believe the Red Sox will be ready for the Yankees, who are back from the West Coast after salvging their three-game series with a 3-2 victory Wednesday night. Meanwhile, Boston completed a three-game sweep at Toronto with an 8-1 rout last night, led by two J.D. Drew home runs in back-to-back at-bats. And despite being swept by the Bombers in the Bronx in their previous series, the Sox are on upticks of 22-8 at home following a road trip of seven or more days, 37-16 overall at Fenway and 36-17 in series openers. Plus, Boston is 7-0 in the last seven Fenway meetings between these two.

Now, here’s where it gets hairy … I know Andy Pettitte is on fire, much better than Brad Penny, but this game falls under one of the best systems to bet, and I’m siding with the Red Sox.

You don’t have to list either pitcher, as far as I’m concerned, but for the record, Penny is 5-2 in 12 home starts this season, and is 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA in two career starts against the Yanks. Boston is also 6-2 in its last eight series openers behind Penny.

Today's Complimentary Selection

I’ve got the Rams and Steve Spagnuolo, who is making his home debut with the Rams at the Edward Jones Dome, and I’ve got Falcons coach Mike Smith, who says he will continue to use the preseason games for evaluation of his players. He said Wednesday morning that these games are less about winning and more about seeing what his team is capable of.

So here we go. It would be very easy to take the home underdog, but the fact is, no matter how much time Smith is putting his starters in for, Atlanta’s roster is much more talented than St. Louis’, and it should still win this football game … then again, Ocho Stinko kicked an extra point last night, and the Bengals beat the Patriots.

So, I’m taking the under in this game.

I think Atlanta will be hyped up to play much better defensively after their sloppy second-half showing by the second- and third-teamers in last Saturday night's 27-26 loss to Detroit. Atlanta led at halftime 10-3, before allowing 24 points in the second half, 14 in the fourth quarter.

For St. Louis, it could be a lot of ground game with Marc Bulger sidelined for perhaps the rest of the preseason thanks to a busted finger. Plus, with injuries to Donnie Avery, Tim Carter and Brooks Foster leave the Rams with only seven healthy wide receivers. And, since Samkon Gado and Antonio Pittman were the clear winners last week in the battle to back up Steven Jackson, I expect the pecking order to change tonight with a strong showing by Kenneth Darby or rookie Chris Ogbonnaya. And let’s not forget Ahman Green stopped by for a free-agent visit Wednesday, something that had to of raised everyone’s eyebrows.

The under has been the play in St. Louis’ last three home preseason contests, while the low for Atlanta was on a 3-0 streak and a 5-2 overall run before last week’s game at Detroit soared. I like my chances with the low number.

Today's Complimentary Selection

The Rangers rocked MInnesota 11-1 as a run-line play Thursday night, giving me eight wins in my last 12 complimentary selections! Now I'm turning my attention to the big series in Beantown tonight to pick up another victory.

The Yankees have lost seven straight games at Fenway Park, but they had also lost eight straight overall against the Red Sox before sweeping their AL East rivals in four straight games at Yankee Stadium earlier this month.

New York starter Andy Pettitte (9-6, 4.09 ERA) has given up two runs or less in his last four outings. He also has pitched well on the road this year, going 5-2 with a 3.17 ERA in 11 starts away from the Bronx.

The veteran left-hander is 16-9 with a 3.63 ERA in 34 games (32 starts) against the Red Sox, and he threw seven shutout innings against them in a no-decision on Aug. 9.

Boston starter Brad Penny (7-7, 5.22) has not panned out like Sox fans hoped he would this season. The hard-throwing right-hander is 0-3 with a 7.54 ERA over his last four outings, and 5-2 with a 4.70 ERA at Fenway this year.

He has pitched well in two career starts against the Yankees, going 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA. Penny threw six shutout innings against them on June 11, but New York is playing a lot better now.

The Yankees are 25-8 since the All-Star break, 14-3 since Aug. 2 and 5-2 on their current road trip. The Bronx Bombers are obviously no strangers to Fenway, so I don't see them slowing down at all today, especially with Pettitte on the mound. Take the Yankees in this one.

New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox

Boston Red Sox +115

This is a big time revenge game for the Red Sox after getting swept in a 4-game series in New York from August 6th-9th. The Red Sox are still 8-4 against the Yankees this season and a perfect 6-0 at home and you can be rest assured they've had this one circled. This series is very important for the wild card race, but it also could go a long way in deciding if Boston can still challenge the Yanks for the A.L. East. Pettitte has been very good for the Yanks of late, but Boston is very familiar with him and has scorched lefty starters this season. The Red Sox are 8-4 in Penny's home starts this season and he is a perfect 4-0 against the money line versus the Yankees in his career with an ERA of 2.31. The Red Sox are worth a unit tonight in this extreme revenge spot at home as an underdog.

Game: Los Angeles Sparks at San Antonio Silver Stars Aug 21 2009 8:00PM

Prediction: San Antonio Silver Stars

Reason: Ai Simulator 3* graded play on San Antonio as they face Los Angeles set to start at 8:00 EST. AiS shows a 72% probability that SA will win this game by 3 or more points. Supporting this graded play is a system that has gone 33-9 for 79% winners since 1997. Play on home teams playing on back-to-back days, with a winning percentage of between 40-49% after 15 or more games. Fine tuning this system a notch to include just home favorites improves the system to a remarkable 25-5 ATS for 83% winners since 1997. SA is projected to have a 90% probability of scoring between 72 and 77 points in this game. Note that LA is an imperfect 0-7 ATS (-7.7 Units) in road games when they allow 72 to 77 points in a game over the last 2 seasons. Take San Antonio.

Game: Kansas City Chiefs at Minnesota Vikings Aug 21 2009 8:00PM

Prediction: Kansas City Chiefs

Reason: Here we have a Week 2 NFL preseason matchup featuring a pair of teams that experienced very different opening week results. We were all over Minnesota as our Non-Conference Dog of the Year and apparently you listened as the line moved significantly through the week to the point the Vikings were actually favored by a couple of points by kickoff. Then, they rewarded us and the rest of their backers with a convincing 13-3 win over perennial preseason weakling Indianapolis.
Kansas City, meanwhile, let down 1st year HC Todd Haley with a less than inspiring 16-10 home loss to the Texans. The game, which was played in a downpour, wasn?t actually that close as the Chiefs trailed 16-3 entering the final quarter. Still, one positive that Haley can take away from the opener was that his team actually outgained Houston 307-280. A -3 turnover ratio is what killed them.
As I?m sure you?ve heard by now, Minnesota has decided to lure Brett Favre out of his ?retirement.? Bad move in our opinion, much worse than the Eagles deciding to sign Mike Vick, because the Vikings need actual results from Favre, something he may not be able to provide at his advanced age.
As for this game, underdogs playing in this week of preseason are 27-8 ATS the last 10 seasons if off a SU loss the week prior. Look for the Favre situation to not only be a distraction, but to depress the likes of Sage Rosenfels, who actually looked quite good in the opener. Kansas City will want to win for its new head coach and is due for a road win in preseason play after going 1-9 ATS away from Arrowhead during Herm Edwards tenure.
Play on Kansas City.

G-Man with a 23-19 comp play run heading into Friday.

Hard to believe the Yankees are a road favorite at Fenway Park, but with their most-recent 4 game sweep in the Bronx of their hated division rival, New York is now in the driver's seat in the AL East.

New York is currently on an 8-2 run their last 10 on the road, and and overall run of 38-13 their last 51 games. Starter Andy Pettitte has found some vintage stuff, as AP is 1-0 his last 4 starts, allowing just 4 earned runs his last 26 frames of work. Included is a solid 7 scoreless against Boston, in a game the Yankees won 5-2.

Brad Penny missed facing the Yankees the last time around, but Penny has not been giving Terry Francona what he needs in the rotation of late, as Penny is a dismal 0-3 his last 4 starts, allowing an alarming 19 runs in just over 22 innings of work.

New York can put a stranglehold on the division - if they haven't already - with a winning weekend in Beantown. Expect the Yanks to get the weekend started off right.

Theeeee Yankees win. Theee Yankees win!

1 Unit on Boston Red Sox +115

Minnesota Vikings -2.5

The Vikings looked very impressive in their first win of the year holding Indy to 3 points in that game. The Vikings are very deep on defense and with KC losing at home by 6 to Houston they only could get 10 points in that game. Since the addition of Farve to the Vikings that makes them a very deep team at the QB position and overall better depth than KC. KC was down 13-0 at home in their first preseason game. Now I believe that the Vikings will have the depth that we need to win this game and cover the spread Friday Night.

VEGAS EXPERTS

At first, we worried about playing Nick Blackburn on the road, but the Twins are a very strong 8-1 away from the Homer Dome since the start of last season when seeking revenge for a loss as a home favorite. They have won 13 of their last 21 games in this ballpark and the Royals really struggle vs. righties (4.1 runs per game). Furthermore, KC is 12-23 at home off a loss this season.

Play on: Minnesota

Milwaukee Brewers vs. Washington Nationals Washington Nationals
+120 at SPBOOK > 15h.
Milwaukee comes to town and faces a surprisingly hot Washington pitcher. The Nationals are 4-1 in the last 5 starts made by 26-year old J.D. Martin, who has a 2.35 ERA his last three starts. He doesn't walk anyone, which is a huge plus in a big park like this. The Brewers may be favored with a 10-game winner on the hill, but Braden Looper has not thrown well, with a 5.03 ERA. The team is 1-4 in his last 5 starts. Play the Nationals

(923) TEXAS RANGERS
(924) TAMPA BAY RAYS
Take "(923) TEXAS RANGERS"

The Rangers continue to play terrific ball and I think they're a good value tonight at Tampa Bay. The Rays are tough at home, but Scott Kazmir has been extremely erratic and I trust Rangers righty Dustin Nippert more right now. This game sure looks like a tossup, which makes Texas a decent play just on the line value alone.

(921) NEW YORK YANKEES
(922) BOSTON RED SOX
Take "Under"

At 7:10 pm our complimentary selection is on the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox 'under' the total. Yankee veteran lefthander Andy Pettitte is quietly having one of his best seasons in years, and if you took a poll amongst the Yankee players who was their "unsung hero" for 2009, they likely would tell you it's the 37-year-old southpaw, now in his third year back in pinstripes after having played his first ten Major League seasons in the Bronx before switching over to the NL. Pettitte has done everything the Yanks could have hoped for with a 9-6 record and 4.09 ERA and 13 quality starts and he would have quite a few more wins on the year if his teammates had given him better run support in many of his outings. It hasn't quite been the same kind of year for first-time Red Sox starter Brad Penny, but the veteran righthander has a funny way of showing up for big games like this one. For example, In two career starts against the Yankees, he is 1-0 with a 2.45 ERA over 11 innings and he also pitches markedly better at home than he does on the road, posting a 5-2 record in 12 starts in Fenway so far. Pettitte last started against the Red Sox on Aug. 9 in New York and fired seven scoreless, five-hit innings but took a no-decision in New York's 5-2 win. Take the 'under.' As always, good luck...Al McMordie
