Yeah, I was aware of most of that. What a f*ing nightmare. If it isn't one thing with this team it is another, losing in PKs in 90, 94 and 98, blowing leads to France in injury time then a golden goal in Euro 00, not qualifying out of groups in Euro 04, Totti's red card and 5 incorrectly disallowed goals in 02. F*k me, now this.

We happened to be the 1st team to not advance out of the group stage (Euro 2004),without having lost 1 game!

If that ain't a bad beat, ... :realtongu

3 years ago, sure, but they are playing different futbol under Lippi. More attacking, no more cattenaccio, 4-3-3 (4-3-1-2 really) formation with Totti playing in the Ronaldinho position between MF and F. Totally different than it has traditionally been.

I imagine you are excluding Uruguay from that comment. To me, Germany is excruciating to watch, worse than the catenaccio Italian football.

The 1994 final was the most boring thing to watch ever. With Roberto Baggio being hurt and not playing at full speed the italians didn't try to hide the fact that there were going to go to PK and take there chances. Its was 10 guys back and Baggio limping along hoping for a counter attack. Which was a shame since there matches in 1970 and 1982 were classics.

I don't disagree DMMD. You won't get me to defend their style of play. It was probably more frustrating to watch as a fan of the team than for you non-fans. At least you are just watching a boring game, we are watching a boring game and dying with EVERY possession b/c we know that any kick of the ball can turn the game around. Exacerbated by the fact that they just sit back after scoring and try to hold on.

The thing that frustrated me more than anything was they always had talented forwards and wouldn't use them to their fullest. Whether it was Vialli, Schilachi, Baggio, Zola, Vieri, Inzaghi, Totti, Del Piero, Di Vaio, whoever, they never played 2 scorers with a playmaker (Baggio, Del Piero, Totti). FInally they are doing that it is paying off.

I totally agree with your post. I think that it why people bitch about it cause in the world cup and euro italy is usually sending a top three team talent wise and they don't show it off and played within an outdated system ever since a win became 3 points. It just doesn't work for the most part in the current game using Italy against Swe in Euro 04 as an example where they sat back after scoring and let Swe get back into the game. The same can be said for England against Portugal who took an early 1-0 on Owen's goal after 3 minutes or something and tried to milk that lead the rest of the way. Playing like that rarely works.

LOL, not since Francescoli has Uruguay been fun to watch

They basically play the same style as Italy (was not aware of the line changes and new coaching style against their norm)

Lots of Italian immigrants in Uruguay, may be behind it

Germany is the sum of its parts more than the individual, and often very boring

Don't forget Italy/South Korea in 02. Notwithstanding the b/s Totti red and disallowed goal from I forget who, they sat back and SK pounded away for the last 20 minutes, eventually sending it to OT and winning in OT. Same happened w/ France in Euro 00.

Yeah, since Lippi took over for Trappatoni after Euro 04. They are playing with Totti (or Del Piero if Totti is out) in the middle of the 3 MF and 2 Fs and aren't sitting back once they score first. Much more exciting and not as tough to watch knowing they are going to give up a late goal.

I once heard they held on for a victory without being tied or going behind only 40% of the time when they scored first.

..to their credit,it was also effective in the '94 campaign.

The Azzurri only conceeded 1 goal throughout the entire tournament,(penalty kicks aside) which carried them to the Final.

You'll see a different approach this time around; hopefully it will carry them 1 step further than it did 12 years ago! :103631605

That isn't true, it was 90 where they didn't give up a goal until the semis v. Argentina, then lost in PKs after a 1-1 tie.

Walter Zenga was a brick wall in net for that world cup.

Except when he f*ed up and got caught half way out and was out jumped by Caniggia
