Snedeker looks like a strong contender, but at 14/1 I went in a different direction . . .

David Lingmerth(100/1) e.w.
- - Heads my list of candidates for having been beneficially stewing in their own juices and/or chomping at the bit while watching the action across the pond last week.

J.J. Henry(110/1) e.w.
- - IMO has really done nothing but good and real good since I’ve had him prominent in my hole-by-hole radar in recent weeks and months, and IMO has the class to deliver the goods.

Kevin Stadler(150/1) e.w.
- - I thought he was playing the best golf of his career (or nearly so) earlier in the season, and now evidence of a second wind in whatever he was doing.

Y.E. Yang(125/1) e.w.
- - May have some wind under his sails.

Graham Delaet(33/1) e.w.
- - Impressed me in a number of subtle ways while hosting the Inside the P.G.A. Tour program this week.

Ernie Els(33/1) e.w.
- - I thought it a stretch that he would hit another valedictory peak last week at Muirfield, but think what he left on the table last week has him in a good place this week vis-a-vis his price.

Stuart Appleby(200/1) e.w.
- - Still time for him to earn a spot at Firestone, where he is always among my first choices since his marriage to the local gal, his lovely second wife, Ashley.

Casey Wittenberg(250/1) e.w.
- - Sitting at #162 in the FedEx standings, I’ve had him pegged for punctuating his 2013 season with a fight and a bang rather than a whimper.

Geoff Ogilvy(125/1) e.w.
- - As an Ogilvyaholic, I am a bit surprised at his play and his scheduling and a lot about his season. But my catechism teaches me that when assessing Ogilvy it all starts with his driving, and I thought that gave him some modest possibilities given the generous fairways of Muirfield, and he sort of did there about what I modestly expected. Now on to a Nicklaus course, which should again be roomy enough off the tee for some better days, so we’ll see.

Cameron Tringale(100/1) e.w.
- - I have overplayed this hand this season, but it’s been built on similar ANGLES and INFORMATION as my best stuff from a good year has been built on, so I just keep trusting my stuff.

Mike Weir(150/1) e.w.
- - Delusional, plain and strong, and at a lousy price.

Kyle Stanley(125/1) e.w.
- - Some of my impressions about his 2013 campaign have parallels to what I said about Ogilvy (only much less so, not more so), and a roomy Nicklaus venue may get him untracked as well.

Billy Andrade(250/1) e.w.
- - I was very impressed with “where he was at” after watching his lengthy interview during a rain delay last week, especially when he talked about his son being on his bag in order to earn some money before starting back to college. I was then too wrapped up in the proceedings at Muirfield to give much thought to Mississippi, but I was kicking myself as he charged up the leaderboard on Sunday (but he got only a share of 5th instead of a share of 4th). The decision this week is that come what come may, at least I won’t be kicking myself.

Brandt Snedeker(12/1) e.w.
- - I lied.

Note: I had these write-ups more or less prepared for this morning, but then I had a computer problem that had me in a panic to just get on any computer and get my plays posted before the 7:00 a.m. EDT start, and now my computer is letting me get at my document so I can tweak and post my write-ups.

WGC - Bridgestone

Outrights:

Phil Mickelson(14/1) e.w.
Brandt Snedeker(22/1) e.w.
- - Leaving a winning marker is a non-negotiable policy for me without some compelling reason not to do so, with Brett Rumford (2013) and Thomas Bjorn (2012) being the two most recent examples which come happily to mind.

Keegan Bradley(35/1) e.w.
- - Has an eye for defending his crowns.

Francesco Molinari(125/1) e.w.
- - Had the best seat in the house matching shots with Mickelson at Muirfield, and now gets a moment and a course where he's capable of his best swagger.

Ian Poulter(55/1) e.w.
- - Neither here nor there to observe that if I had no wager on the line, one of the few times I would root for Poulter would be if he was butting heads with . . . Keegan Bradley.

Angel Cabrera(66/1) e.w.
- - All logic and intution strongly suggests it's much more likely the re-committed Cabrera crosses the line here rather than joing an all-time great like Mickelson in landing his third different major, so he will carry my dollars and pesos.

Adam Scott(14/1) e.w.
- -

Zach Johnson(66/1) e.w.
- -

Paul Casey(80/1) e.w.
- -

You can't bet em all every week, or I'd be adding to my savers on Stricker, Stenson, Westwood and Sterne, in an event that has been modestly unsuccessful for me through the years.

Posting on the fly . . .

It's a fact I have a far better capping record in the four majors and The Players than I do in the week-in-and-week-out of the regular tours (although the U.S. PGA is the exception in that run of success, and of course one chance I had to put a dent in my lack of success in the PGA was snuffed when Dustin Johnson(33/1) incurred a two shot penalty on the 72nd hole at Whistling Straits). Part of the reason for the success is probably because of the effort I give, but I think it's based more on a solid catechism of knowing what I like (and don't particularly like) around each of those events.

All four majors (and The Players, in March and then in May) have some significant attributes when it comes to capping, including my focus and approach of trying to track players for weeks or even months heading in for their chances of peaking at these career defining events. And when play begins, you better know the players will have a long week of grinding in front of them.

. . . Now this year I've had some exceptionally large short lists on a weekly basis, in the majors and otherwise, and while I feel I've done a decent job of finding names I'm really comfortable dropping, I've had some really long lists when I started on Monday morning. . . Last week I managed to squeak out a tiny profit with 9 choices in a limited field event (while "opposing" Tiger winning for the 8th time), plus 5 more choices in Reno, for a total of 14 choices, and after landing first and 2nd at Augusta, and 1st, 2nd and 3rd at Muirfield, and close to 1st with Mickelson at Merion (as counterweights to my long-standing drought in the P.G.A.), and it's been that way fairly frequently this year, so I'm not too focused on being selective in pulling the trigger . . .

- - I would be surprised (very) if Rose soared so quickly again, but more or less expecting both of these gentlemen to be in the discussions on Friday and Saturday and quite possibly on the back 9 on Sunday.

Zach Johnson(40/1) e.w.
- - Looking back on my sheets I see I could have gotten 66/1 on August 4th, which is a move I should have made.

Henrik Stenson(25/1) e.w.
- - Pair him with Tiger, give him all sorts of varied examinations, he's been a machine of late, without shining on the greens.

Jason Dufner(40/1) e.w.
- - Really ticks a lot of boxes with me, until I get to his price.

Bill Haas(55/1) e.w.
- - Has some of the makings of an epic family moment, but P.U. on the price.

Lucas Glover(400/1) e.w.
- - I sure don't mind that price.

Brandt Snedeker(25/1) e.w.
- - I know he has followed a game plan, but I still can't be keen on the grind he's facing this week after his run of events that started in Europe.

********************************

Angel Cabrera(80/1) e.w.
- - Now I'm down in the selections where I could have dropped a few if I was being selective.

Paul Casey(150/1) e.w.
- - I don't necessarily think this is his time, but I definitely believe his price is too large.

Charles Howell(250/1) e.w.
- - Gets his first bite of the apple at a major this year, and I think it's a venue that could sort of suit if he's as ready as he could be.

Richard Sterne(125/1) e.w.
- - A vastly underrated player having a stellar campaign.

Jim Furyk(66/1) e.w.
- - The timing and venue ain't bad for a chance to completely turn around his mixed fortunes of the last two seasons.

Tiger Woods(+450) Win Only
- - Insurance Against.

No shortage of ANGLES to play this week, but not too sure I've gone in the directions I really expected this week.

Zach Johnson(14/1) e.w.

- - Oak Hill was just too long last week, or I believe Zach would have been nothing but higher up the leaderboard. He grew up on a Donald Ross course, and he's overdue a win playing the golf he's been playing.

Stuart Appleby(150/1) e.w.
- - His game has been on the boil, not a bad spot for catching fire.

Paul Casey(50/1) e.w.

- -

Jason Kokrak(125/1) e.w.
- - Not on my radar, but others have made his case, and part of my weekly capping always involves a willingness to pull the trigger if I like what I see, regardless of how or why I came to feel it.

Jonathan Byrd(80/1) e.w.
- - I've been tracking him and wanting to give him a chance with my cash, but in good conscience I've had to steer clear all year, but now comes a moment when I'm happy to align myself with his fortunes.

David Toms(45/1) e.w.
- - Already exempt for next year off the career money list, but he's carried his momentum before and drawn inspiration from his son Carter in notching a win, and I'm a sucker for those types of stories and ANGLES.
http://www.shreveporttimes.com/arti...Pros-could-learn-from-15-year-old-Carter-Toms

Ross Fisher(100/1) e.w.
- - He really could not have gotten less out of his play this season, so maybe a stop at the Last Chance Saloon is right up his street.

Lucas Glover(150/1) e.w.
- -

Rory Sabbatini(80/1) e.w.
- - Tracking, so going with a hunch.

John Rollins(100/1) e.w.
- - Probably a better hunch.

David Mathis(320/1) e.w.
- - I disavow any credit for anything good which transpires, but not shy about claiming any possible rewards, while ready to take full credit should there be anything laughable to cry over about the play.

Casey Wittenberg(300/1) e.w.
- - Standing by what I said in Canada: "I’ve had him pegged for punctuating his 2013 season with a fight and a bang rather than a whimper."

Quite a few additional names could have tempted me in, but I figure most of them names may be ready to salvage a season without rising up all the way to capturing the trophy, so I'm good, I hope.

And I need to go back and update my record after the last few weeks . . .
