Eagles just paid a QB that ended up sucking a mere 5 years ago after the '17 season, we were told this would set them back 7 years. By 2021 they were back in the playoffs, '22 in the superbowl. These deals are short and not all that onerous long-term. The sticker price just gets people.
If you could not pay QB XYZ and instead pluck the best non-QB guys off the other teams and pay them, the best position players in the league then I think passing on paying them would make more sense. But you're just gonna end up having to overpay free agents who are free agents for a reason, maybe you had a really good draft and can pay some of those guys but that means you have to have guys coming up for deals at that exact time. You don't get TJ Watt and Micah Parsons instead of the QB, you get Nelson Agholor, Jonnu Smith, Hunter Henry.
