The simple fact is that oil, at today's prices and at higher prices, is still the best way to power transportation.

absolutely, but the gap is closing as petro prices rise and more effecient fuels evolve.

As I said its not a bad idea to to drill domestically regardless.

typical short sighted americans. no wonder half this country will be working till the day they die.

now i have no idea if drilling will dramatically decrease the price, i doubt it; but going crazy now without doing the leg work will just hurt down the road.

the no brainer choice is methanol. its used in race cars and has near no pollution. dubya wants us to continue slaving over oil though as long as it makes him more money.

poor souls will be working until the day they die to help support those that don't work

If we start tapping our own reserves and and start to develop nuclear power again, the speculation element within the price of oil equation will decrease immediately. There will be short term benefit.

I can't believe somebody thinks the fucking status quo is acceptable, talk about short sighted.

Long-term, we have to decrease our reliance on foreign sources of energy, drilling here and now is part of the equation. There is no reasonable debate.

Id support that idea as well. What does energy independence really mean? Maybe not immediate change at the pump, but all of a sudden the dollar looks better, we create jobs, the economy does better with real world growth.

Lets say we will not be able to reap any of the oil from one of these sites for 15 years, which imo is too long a guess even with todays technology not to mention tomorrows. But lets just say. What happens if nothing else happens within that time period, alternatives putter along, demand for oil increases and we continue to import oil from many of the other countries around the world. We will probably be at war with at least one of these countries if not more within those 15 years. Every time some conflict or disruption happens, the price goes up. Even if supply is uneffected price goes up, why? UNCERTAINTY! What do we have if we control our own energy? Well we have a lot more certainty that we control our own energy and not some rogue nation who we are really not on friendly terms with anyways. So 15 years come and go, and we are still sitting around talking about how we should have done something 15 years ago but now it is too late.

agree 100% with nuclear...it is this countries only salvation barring a miracle

however, one again it takes at least 5 years to bring a reactor on-line, so anybody saying that will immediately decrease the price is misinformed

To Romanowski,

My point is that there are huge infrastructure costs associated with using electricity for transportation. Cars, trucks and buses would have to replaced. Railroads electrified, addition electricity produced, transmission lines and grids built and rebuilt, etc.

The simple fact is that oil, at today's prices and at higher prices, is still the best way to power transportation.

The current power grid doesnt have the capacity to produce enough electricity for much transportation to be powered via electricity.

Also, if we use natural gas to fuel additional electricity, we will be paying a fortune to heat & cool homes.

If we use current coal technology for new electricity, we will be gagging with pollution like the Chinese.

People act as if we can just turn on a switch and all the electricity, oil, gas we ever need will suddenly appear.

jdog posted it best...its too late for this not to become a major problem and its at least a decade before viable solutions are going to be widely available.

nuclear is the answer, but that also takes many years to become fully operational.

Not true DaWoof. The great thing about plug ins would be that they could use the unused excess capacity of our current power plants for over night charging. This would put no extra stress on the grid...and would increase efficiencies.

We will conserve, replace and innovate. Same as it ever was.

The process is already taking place...nearly seamlessly.
