As for your second statement, if you go to the census bureau's site you'll see that the median American income is in the 40's (a far cry from 10) and that includes retirees and farmers. I can remember briefly working for minimum wage when I was 16 but am hard-pressed to think of anyone living on their own that can work minimum wage and still pay all their bills. Higher paying jobs are out there you just have to swallow your pride and be willing to do the work.
