2 words. " frozen envelope"

Best idea to prevent tanking is give the teams that barely missed the playoffs the best chance.

Now you would have 2 different races and reasons to win. It is more than obvious teams are tanking. Also basketball is the easiest sport to tank by far.

Then teams that suck would be more likely to suck forever. There isn’t gonna be any way that doesn’t have some problem

no system is perfect……some advice people can use when they encounter a tanking team on their TV is to use one of the other 477 channels

NBA reg season sucks when teams aren’t tanking, so it doesn’t matter too much

would be alot better if players had alot stronger incentive to stay with team since in the NBA, the stars are free agents at 24ish when they hit their prime.

Pacers drafted Granger and Paul George. And around 10-12 which is impressive considering how the NBA is. It didn't even matter.

They have bird rights and can pay them more money,

Basically no all star caliber player has not re-signed with their team on the first deal when eligible.

Then the fringe playoff teams would lose on purpose . That would be even worse.
You would have what Dallas did happen every year

This year of all years Mavs could’ve convinced themselves that if they snuck it they’d have shot to make run. They haven’t been healthy since Kyrie came, went last year, west is open, etc

Very possible 6-8 seed wins the West this time.

I know but the $$ is so big that it doesn't seem like an incentive.

280 million to stay where you are.
200 million to move to the city and players you want

Not even counting endorsements.

I just told you everyone re-signs the first time they are eligible.

Later in their careers even guys re-sign with shitty teams because they would rather just get most $ possible and figure rest out later as well as don’t really care if they win or not (Lillard, Beal, Westbrook w/ OKC)

No one even cares about switching teams that much anymore, that’s more of a 4-5 years ago thing. Most of these guys rather just get paid now, if they can be in the ideal situation or get traded later then they will take it but they aren’t losing any sleep about being on a bad team.

I think having a hard cap like the NFL has would improve the NBA dramtically.

NBA has so many horrible contracts

Incentive laden contracts as well. NBA... you sign a 4 year 120 million dollar contract... $$ is fully guaranteed unless you retire and walk away.

hard cap works in the nfl because the contracts are so short, you do it in the nba and a team commits the unthinkable mistake of signing a guy and then he declines and they’re gonna lose flexibility to improve

so then you have shorter contracts, then players move around more and that goes against what you just said of being able to resign your own guys. Nothing is gonna work perfectly

The owners of the nba or nfl are worth like 200 billion combined, you don’t atleast think they’ve fleshed all of these possibilities out as to what is the best way to socially engineer a good product? There is no panacea

The players are entitled to 50% of BRI, so the hard cap would just be higher than the soft cap to make up for the fact no one can go over it.

The argument I think you’re trying to make is giving a 23 year old 5/175 and then he turns into ben Simmons is shitty for that team and fans. What’s the alternative? You give him 2 years and he outperforms his contract then hits FA and leaves.

This all just falls under the “shit happens” category for me rather than something we need a constitutional amendment to fix.

NBA investigating. Fine Cuban 25 million(like he cares) and take away a lest 1 draft pick.

You can't have teams fucking around on the level the Mavs just did....

Portland has basically been doing what the Mavs just did, except they did it for a month.

This was great for all the talking heads. Lots of fake outrage for them to talk about for a few days. It is a bad look with two games left and the Mavericks not trying to win to get into the playoffs. But how can you really fault them for doing what's best for their teams future? It's not like they are being greedy and trying to save money or something. They have eyeballs, they see how their team in playing and their talent. I'm sure it wasn't easy to make the decision to give up on this year to create a better future. If anything, most people/organizations are guilty are not being able to look in the mirror and be honest with themselves.

Sucks for fans, winning is what it is all about. And it seems wrong when teams are not trying to win. This just looks worse then some of the others , but it happens all the time. Teams seem to even tank harder in years with a bigtime player set to get drafted. Heck, the Blazers went into full tank mode 3 weeks ago, as soon as they dropped like 4 games out. All of sudden all their players were out every game. Is that any better of worse then the Mavs. The Spurs and Pop have been doing it all year!

Was probably a tough call for Cuban and Co.

A- try to make playoffs , an uphill battle and catch lightning in bottle with Luka and Kyrie and win a couple rounds (they have no chance to win it all, they are worse then last year)

B- tank, gain a top 10 draft pick (by not losing theirs, I'm sure whatever team wont be getting the pick is the most outraged!)
-also get a shot at Wimbanyama, although slight

Best thing NBA could do is force Dallas to give whatever that pick becomes to the Knicks.

Will stop the buffoonery.
