A's brace for invasion of hot Giants

A's notes

ANAHEIM -- Their road trip to near-oblivion is over. Their bullpen woes may finally have been solved. But the A's probably had to fend off the instinct to breathe a big sigh of relief on Thursday.

Simply put, they don't have any time. The Giants will invade Network Associates Coliseum tonight for the first game of their annual interleague get-together, and in case the A's weren't looking, their neighbors from across the bay are in first place.

"It seems like every team we play is in first place," A's manager Ken Macha said. "We go to Boston, they're in first place. The Chicago White Sox come to our place, they're in first place. Cincinnati comes in, same thing. We go to St. Louis, first place. Oh well, let's get 'em while we're hot."

Overall, that may not be the case. The A's 2-1 win over the Anaheim Angels on Thursday concluded a 3-7 road trip. But it would be hard to dispute the A's home credentials lately. They're 23-10 home mark is second-best in the majors to the New York Yankees, and they're 19-3 at the Coliseum since May 5.

But most visitors during that stretch haven't been as hot as San Francisco. The Giants are 26-9 since Jason Schmidt's 144-pitch one-hitter against the Chicago Cubs on May 18. On Thursday, they completed a four-game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Schmidt, by the way, will get the ball tonight. He's tied for the NL lead in wins with nine, third in ERA at 2.26, and second in strikeouts with 103. He hasn't lost since April 21 and made the Boston Red Sox look silly in pitching his second one-hitter of the season Sunday.

"He has explosive stuff," Macha said. "He has a powerful arm. He's lights out, regardless of 144 pitches."

Barry Bonds, of course, bring with him an entirely different set of issues. He entered Thursday's game against Los Angeles leading the NL in on-base percentage (.612) and slugging percentage (.774). He was also second in batting (.355), tied for third in homers (18) and, with 101 already, was on pace to walk a record 227 times.

"We're not going to treat it any differently than we did last year," Macha said, when asked about facing Bonds. "We'll take a look at the situation. If it's going to impact the game, we'll walk him. ... I'm still amazed (that) with the number of walks he gets and with not being pitched to all the time that when he gets one, he still hits it out. To maintain that sharpness is something else."

If nothing else, the A's received a bit of a pre-Bonds preview during the Angels series. Anaheim right fielder Vladimir Guerrero has been doing about as much damage in the AL -- he's second in hitting (.354), tops in hits (101) and RBI (65) and tied for third in homers (17) -- and he did his share against the A's, going 8-for-15 with six RBI in the four-game series.

Short hops

Right fielder Jermaine Dye was 1-for-14 career against Anaheim reliever Scot Shields before smacking a two-run homer to center off him in the sixth. Shields replaced Angels starter Ramon Ortiz, who allowed three hits in 5-1/3 innings. "I didn't have a problem with the move," Dye said. "It's probably the right one to make." ... The A's are forecasting a crowd of 40,000 tonight and 45,000 on Saturday and Sunday for their annual interleague home series against the Giants. The pitching matchups: Tonight -- Barry Zito (4-4, 4.81) vs. Schmidt (9-2, 2.26), 7:05 p.m.; Saturday -- Rich Harden (3-5, 4.25) vs. Kirk Rueter (3-6, 4.73), 6:05 p.m.; Sunday -- Tim Hudson (7-3, 2.98) vs. Dustin Hermanson (2-2, 4.68), 1:05 p.m.

CUBS-WHITE SOX PREVIEW

Associated Press
Jun. 25, 2004 6:41 a.m.
GAME: Chicago Cubs (40-32) at Chicago White Sox (37-32).

TIME: Friday, 4:05 p.m. EDT.

Mark Prior has had mixed results since returning from the disabled list.

The right-hander will be looking for some consistency as the Chicago Cubs open the first round of their Windy City series with the Chicago White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field.

Prior has made just four starts this year after missing the first part of the season with a sore Achilles' tendon and tender elbow.

The right-hander allowed three earned runs and six hits in five innings of the Cubs' 4-3 win over Mark Mulder and the Oakland Athletics on Saturday, but did not receive a decision. He looked relatively solid in all but the third inning, when he gave up four hits and three runs.

"Prior had good stuff today. The consistency is starting to get there," Cubs catcher Michael Barrett said. "He had one shaky inning."

Prior, who has been monitored closely since his return, threw 85 pitches Saturday, 55 for strikes. He was coming off his first win of the year, a 7-2 victory over Roger Clemens and the Houston Astros, in which he allowed just five hits in five scoreless innings.

"It seems like he's on an every other start sharp program," Cubs manager Dusty Baker said. "The next time out, if history repeats itself, he'll be sharp like he was the last time."

Prior knows it will take some time to return to form.

"Right now I'm battling myself, battling myself mentally and understanding what my limitations are," he said. "It's not from a pitch-count standpoint, but I'm not in normal June form, not in mid-season form. That's something I have to understand and respect.

"That doesn't mean I still can't get people out. I should get people out, and I'm very upset with the way I pitched today. It's coming and a matter of me recognizing what I can do."

The Cubs lost 4-0 to the St. Louis Cardinals on Thursday for their second straight defeat since a three-game winning streak. Sammy Sosa, Aramis Ramirez and Corey Patterson each had two hits.

The White Sox beat the Cleveland Indians 7-1 on Thursday for just their second win in six games. Jose Valentin hit a three-run homer in the first, and the White Sox added four runs in the eighth.

Valentin said he is looking forward to this weekend's series.

"Your head is more in the game, you concentrate more and every pitch is something that is amazing," he said. "The crowd is crazy."

Baker knows what the rivalry means to the city.

"I learned what it means," he said. "I'd go into a restaurant and they'd say, 'We don't want the Sox to win, you're going to have to wait for your table.'

"Every series is big for me. Some have more meaning to the people, some have more meaning to the players."

STANDINGS: Cubs - 2nd place (tied), 3 GB, NL Central. White Sox - 2nd place, 2 GB, AL Central.

CUBS PROBABLE STARTER: Prior (1-1, 3.66 ERA). Prior made his only career start against the White Sox on June 29, 2002, allowing four earned runs and five hits in five innings of the Cubs' 5-4 loss. He did not receive a decision.

WHITE SOX PROBABLE STARTER: Jon Garland (5-4, 4.64 ERA). Garland allowed four earned runs and three hits in 8 1-3 innings of Sunday's 4-2 loss to the Montreal Expos. The right-hander, who has lost two straight decisions since winning three in a row, is 2-2 with a 5.75 ERA in seven career appearances, including three starts, against the Cubs.

OFFENSIVE LEADERS: Cubs - Ramirez, .324 avg., 54 RBIs and 54 runs; Moises Alou, 18 HRs; Patterson, 9 SBs. White Sox - Juan Uribe, .300 avg.; Frank Thomas, 18 HRs, 47 RBIs and 48 runs; Willie Harris, 8 SBs.

INTERLEAGUE RECORDS: Cubs, 4-2; White Sox, 5-6.

RF Sosa is 4-for-9 with a homer and three RBIs career against RHP Garland. White Sox - The White Sox have homered in 19 straight home games. ... The White Sox are 20-16 against the Cubs since interleague play began in 1997. ... RHP Jon Adkins pitched a scoreless ninth Thursday after missing seven games with a strained oblique muscle.

avg 5.2 runs.

lets not forget if conter is going, his family is the united states now, boy i bet he comes out pumped up.

i look for a great game from him, and a great rest of the season. can't imagine what he has gone through the past year or so.

we might finally see the cont that made cuba just love him.

For the time being I've convinced myself that this is a good price to be getting even if the little voice in my head tells me that lowe is gonna get roughed up tonight.

JAYPAW i do agree with you, thinking there is good value in this play tonight.

lowe has an era over 9 against the yankees in 2 starts this year, granted he has pitched very well the last 5 games . was very impressed with his performance against the rockies in mile high, great game.

putrid alt runline

This team has to make some changes after what happened last night - and I expect the sox to take at least one in this series... Hopefully it will be tonight.

I cant blame errors for my losses - I made the picks well aware that their defense was lacking.

-2 more down for the team...

forget it I'm bailing on this series...

They are so error prone right now it doesnt matter who is pitching - yet I can't imagine they'll be swept.

Oh well maybe pedro will at least plunk someone and make it interesting.

Jaypaw-I agree with you here, they are just handing games over right now, but I do think they win today! I thought Lieber looked awful yesterday. I hope he stays in their rotation all year, he sucks!

Francona needs to be fired bad

I heard millar will start at first tonight...

Maybe he'll make a few more errors and solidify his prospects of being CUT

What I didn't like is you have bases loaded in the 7th, nobody out. Wakefield out, and you have
Maribelli at 3rd. 2-2 game, why not pinch run for Maribelli, you want Varitek in the game anyway. Maribelli is not going to tag up on a fly ball unless it's on the warning track. I was swearing at my TV when Matsui caught that ball and there was no tag. Crespo scores on that period!
