Preview: Pirates (88-60) at Dodgers (85-62)
Game: 3
Venue: Dodger Stadium
Date: September 20, 2015 4:10 PM EDT

The Pittsburgh Pirates retained sole possession of the top wild card Saturday night by beating the reigning NL Cy Young Award winner, and they will trot out their ace a day later to try to add some cushion.

Gerrit Cole takes the mound Sunday as the Pirates seek a series win against the Los Angeles Dodgers to open their final road trip.

Pittsburgh (88-60) had its lead over Chicago trimmed to a half-game with the Cubs' 5-4 victory over St. Louis early on Saturday, but the Pirates won 3-2 to hand Clayton Kershaw his first loss since June 27 and stay a game ahead.

Andrew McCutchen doubled home two runs in the third and Aramis Ramirez doubled in Gregory Polanco in the eighth, the third run charged to Kershaw. Mark Melancon closed the door for his club-record 47th save.

"It definitely wasn't deflating," manager Clint Hurdle told MLB's official website after his team moved within four games of the NL Central-leading Cardinals, whom the Pirates face Sept. 28-30 after finishing off their 10-game road swing in Chicago.

They should also get a lift from Cole (16-8, 2.60 ERA), who will take the mound without having to worry about Cy Young candidates Zack Greinke and Kershaw. Pittsburgh's ace looks to improve on his 9-2 record and 3.05 career ERA in September while trying to become the fourth NL pitcher with at least 17 wins.

The right-hander has pitched into the seventh inning in five of his last six starts, though he allowed four runs in 6 1-3 innings while not factoring in the decision of a 5-4 win over the Cubs on Tuesday. He has only allowed one home run in 54 2-3 innings over his last nine starts overall and has given up just two over 95 1-3 this season on the road.

Cole has opposed Los Angeles three times in his career, allowing three runs in each on the way to a 2-0 record and 4.50 ERA. He limited the Dodgers to four hits in six innings in a 5-4 Pittsburgh win on Aug. 7.

Los Angeles (85-62) has won five of seven and holds a comfortable 8 1/2-game lead in the NL West as it hands the ball to Mike Bolsinger, who is taking Mat Latos' spot in the rotation.

Bolsinger (6-3, 3.13) will make his 19th start and third since getting called up from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Sept. 4. He is 1-0 since his promotion despite a 6.23 ERA in victories over San Diego and Arizona.

The right-hander matched the shortest start of his career while allowing three runs in 3 2-3 innings of a 9-5 win over the Diamondbacks on Sept. 12, and he seemed to pinpoint his troubles.

"(Against the Padres) I gave up two home runs with offspeed pitches," Bolsinger told MLB's official website, "...This game five or six straight hits on offspeed pitches, and that's my bread and butter, the curve and slider, it's what I need to work on."

The Pirates have won four of five against the Dodgers this season and nine of 12 the last two years.

Preview: Yankees (81-66) at Mets (84-64)
Game: 3
Venue: Citi Field
Date: September 20, 2015 8:05 PM EDT

Matt Harvey has pitched at least eight dominant innings both times he has faced the New York Yankees.

It's guaranteed the New York Mets won't let him go nearly that long this time.

Harvey will take the mound for the first time in 12 days when he opposes CC Sabathia on Sunday night in this three-game series finale at Citi Field.

Harvey (12-7, 2.88 ERA) has pitched 171 2-3 innings, though the Mets (84-64) insist that the figure of 180 that agent Scott Boras says is his limit is not something to which the franchise needs to strictly adhere.

"We realize there's an innings limit and we realize he's close," manager Terry Collins told MLB's official website. "He is going to pitch if we get to the postseason. So, now, how do you get to that point? How do you get him into that?"

The right-hander was rocked for a career high-tying seven runs over 5 1-3 innings and didn't get a decision in an 8-7 victory at Washington in his last outing Sept. 8.

With an eye on the innings count, the team skipped Harvey's turn after that start, with rookie Steven Matz being inserted into the rotation.

Harvey's last outing is in stark contrast to how he has fared in two career starts against the Yankees (81-66), yielding three runs over 16 2-3 innings. Harvey came within one out of a complete game in his longest outing of the year April 25, an 8-2 victory in the Bronx.

The Mets won't give him the chance to get even close to that Sunday.

"We're going to keep a very close eye on him," Collins said. "The Yankees will decide when he comes out, but it won't be real deep in the game."

He'll be opposed once again by Sabathia (4-9, 4.93), who was ripped for a season-high seven runs in five-plus innings in that April matchup. That left him at 2-2 with a 4.11 ERA in five career Subway Series starts.

The much-maligned Sabathia, though, held an opponent scoreless for the first time this season with 6 2-3 innings in a 4-1 road victory over Tampa Bay on Monday. He didn't get a decision.

"CC threw the ball as well as he's thrown it all year," New York's Alex Rodriguez said. "Four pitches for strikes, and it's not just about speed, it's throwing the ball with conviction. Tremendous performance by CC. Very encouraging."

David Wright is 4 for 12 against Sabathia, but other Mets have fared poorly in the matchup. Michael Cuddyer hits .207, Juan Uribe is at .191 and Yoenis Cespedes is 1 for 11.

The Yankees evened this series with a 5-0 victory Saturday. Carlos Beltran hit a three-run homer in the first inning and Brian McCann also connected while Michael Pineda combined with six relievers on a six-hitter.

'You need those guys to step up," manager Joe Girardi said of Beltran and McCann.

Cespedes is 0 for 8 in the series and hitless in 16 at-bats in his last four games after homering nine times in 13 games to start September. Collins is making a lineup change as a result.

'We're going to take him out of the two-hole tomorrow and put him someplace else, see if we can get some guys on ahead of him,' he said. 'That might help out.'

It's uncertain if Mets reliever Tyler Clippard will be available after he was forced to miss the first two games of this series when his back tightened up during pregame warmups Friday.

Lynx-Sparks Preview

If Maya Moore continues to play like she did in Minnesota's playoff opener, the Lynx may be unstoppable in their quest for a third WNBA title.

They'll look to advance to the Western Conference Finals for the fifth straight year Sunday when they meet the Los Angeles Sparks in Long Beach.

Moore was the brightest star in Game 1 of this conference semifinal Friday, scoring a playoff career-high 33 points and adding four steals in the Lynx's 67-65 victory. She tallied 15 points in the third quarter, helping Minnesota outscore Los Angeles 22-13 for the period.

The Lynx, who ranked third-to-last in the regular season with 6.2 steals per game, finished with 11 and forced 15 turnovers.

"We're constantly trying to make our own runs and make the next big play," Moore said. "I was the beneficiary of some active plays in our paint. We got deflections, got tips. I just try to be aggressive and see what happens."

Meanwhile, Candace Parker struggled for the Sparks, scoring 16 points on 5-of-16 shooting with four turnovers. Parker had shot 56.7 percent over her last four games, though she sat out the team's final two regular-season contests. She's now 15 for 43 in her last three meetings with Minnesota and missed a potential tying shot as time expired.

"We didn't run it perfectly but we got the action we wanted and got Candace coming to the ball on the move," coach Brian Agler said of the final play. "She took a shot she can make. Hindsight is 20-20 and you think about a lot of things that could've happened, but sometimes you've got to let players make plays."

Moore was complemented well by Seimone Augustus, who scored 17 in her first game since Aug. 19 after missing eight contests with a foot injury.

"I died in the first two or three minutes," Augustus joked. "Once I got into the groove it all felt normal and it felt like I was back."

Point guard Lindsay Whalen also played for the first time since Aug. 30 after being sidelined by an Achilles injury, but wasn't very effective, scoring only two points with one assist while being minus-16 over 25 minutes.

This game is at the Walter Pyramid on the campus of Long Beach State because of the Emmys taking place at the Microsoft Theater, which is across the street from the Staples Center.

"It's not neutral," said Nneka Ogwumike, who scored 14 in Game 1. "It's still L.A., and we've played there before. It's a home game."

Minnesota is aiming for its second straight playoff sweep of the Sparks after defeating them in two games in the 2012 Western Conference Finals.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers (4-7 SU, 4-6-1 ATS) vs. Montreal Alouettes (4-6 SU, 5-4-1 ATS)

Point-spread: Montreal -10
Total: 42

Game Overview

The Blue Bombers did wonders for their playoff chances with last week’s win to remain a half-game in back of BC for third place in the West. Quarterback Matt Nichols, who started the season with Edmonton, completed 21-of-30 passes for 283 yards and a score in that game. He also carried the ball seven times for 36 yards as Winnipeg rolled-up 117 yards on the ground.

Montreal is coming off a bye week after losing to BC 25-16 in Week 11 as a 4.5-point home favorite. It is now 2-4 SU in its last six games and 3-3 ATS. The total has stayed UNDER in its last four games and in nine of 10 games on the year. The Alouettes are only averaging 20.7 points a game, but they have one of the top defenses in the CFL in points allowed (19.6).

Betting Trends

Winnipeg has covered in six of its last seven road games against Montreal and it is 5-1 SU in its last six games on the road in this series. The Blue Bombers won the first meeting this season 25-23 on July 10 as two-point home favorites. The total stayed UNDER the 53 ½-point closing line.

At the Gate - Sunday

September 19, 2015

Frosted got the job done as the betting favorite in yesterday’s $1 million Pennsylvania Derby (G2), rallying in the stretch to win by two lengths and stamp himself as a legit threat in the Breeders’ Cup Classic (G1).

The colt was my top pick after the scratch of Gimme Da Lute, but I had a hard time getting excited about betting him at 4-5, although he clicked up to even money late and paid $4.00 to win.

The colt snapped a four racing losing streak and picked up his first victory since taking the Wood Memorial (G1) on April 4. He is currently listed at 14-1 odds for the Classic at Sportsbook.ag, good for the seventh choice in the betting. Triple Crown winner American Pharoah remains the favorite at 8-5.

I’m a Chatterbox got her first Grade 1 victory by taking the $1 million Cotillion by two lengths over the stubborn longshot Calamity Kate, who set the early fractions held on to the runner up spot at 22-1.

It looked like it was going to be a quiet day in horse racing on Sunday without any major stakes, but it turns out we have a four day carryover in the Pick 6 at Belmont Park. There is $609,596 in the pot and that should easily grow to over $1 million.

My Best Plays for Sunday includes my eight strongest plays from Belmont Park and Monmouth Park.

Here is today’s opening race from Belmont Park to get the day off to a good start:

BEL Race 1 Md Sp Wt (12:55 ET)
4 Future Show 2-1
7 Elated 5-2
5 C Note 6-1
3 Right Decision 7-2

Analysis: Future Show stalked the early pace while saving ground and finished up well for the runner up spot in her debut, sent off at 10-1 in a field of nine for the Motion barn that usually does not have them fully cranked first out. She does not need to move forward much off her debut effort to pick up her diploma here. She is out of a Red Ransom mare that has dropped a pair of winners and they are both stakes winners on grass, Daring Dancer ($235,392) and Hamp ($201,169).

Elated makes her sixth career start and has three seconds and a third, the beaten favorite in three of her starts. The $270,000 Keeneland purchase has a couple of sibs that have won on grass including multiple stakes winner Burn the Mortgage ($332,424). Steady figures but it looks as if our top pick has more upside.

Wagering
WIN: #4 to win at 8-5 or better.
EX: 4,7 / 3,4,5,7
TRI: 4,7 / 3,4,5,7 / 2,3,4,5,7

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Belmont Park:

BEL Race 8 The John Hettinger (4:46 ET)
10 Invading Humor 5-1
11 Selenite 3-1
8 Freudie Anne 6-1
2 The Tea Cups 5-2

Analysis: Invading Humor is one of six in here that exit the state bred Yaddo which was won by The Tea Cups at nearly 10-1. Our top pick prompted the early pace after breaking from the far outside and weakened in the final furlong to check in eighth. The mare has won six of her 14 career starts and three times here including winning the state bred Mt. Vernon three back at a mile. She won this race last year which was her lone go at nine furlongs.

Selenite stumbled coming out of the gate last out in the Yaddo and came with a good rally and finished gamely in a third place finish, beaten 1 1/4 lengths. She was third in the Sheepshead Bay (G3) at 1 3/8 miles here back in May, beaten 1 3/4 lengths. She was fourth in this race last year. Needs to overcome a tough post, but thinking her price may end up higher than her 3-1 morning line.

Wagering
WIN: #10 to win at 7-2 or better.
EX: 10,11 / 2,8,10,11
TRI: 10,11 / 2,8,10,11 / 1,2,8,10,11

Today’s Featured Race of the Day from Monmouth Park:

MTH Race 7 Clm $5,000B (3:52 ET)
4 Jojo's Gal 3-1
9 Charlie's Rainbow 7-2
1 Chubby Charlie 4-1
5 Glass Zealing 5-1

Analysis: Jojo's Gal dueled for the early lead, opened up a lead heading for home and could not hold off the winner late, beaten just a neck in a game effort at this level. The cut back form two turns seems to have suited her and she does not need to move forward much off her last effort to beat this group.

Charlie's Rainbow stumbled badly coming out of the gate and after pressing the pace she faded to finish a well-beaten seventh. She was a sharp winner two back against $7,500 non-winners of two in her previous start. Looking for her to bounce back with a much better effort here if she gets away cleanly in this spot.

Wagering
WIN: #4 to win at 5-2 or better.
EX: 4,9 / 1,4,5,9
TRI: 4,9 / 1,4,5,9 / 1,4,5,8,9

Live Longshots:
These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.

Belmont Park
R2: #8 Sandcat 12-1
R3: #4 Runaway Posse 12-1
R6: #8 Mascarello 10-1

Good luck today!
